WNBL back on FTA TV!

One of the best women's basketball leagues in the world will return to free to air television in 2018/19, with the WNBL set to be broadcast live on SBS.

According to the details released by Basketball Australia, SBS will simulcast nine regular season games live on Saturday afternoons at 3:00pm, with those games also being live streamed via SBS On Demand and sbs.com.au/sport. The deal is in addition to the existing Fox Sports agreement that live broadcast each week, ensuring every finals game will be available to fans live, ad-break free and in HD.

Very interesting considering the NBL is likely going to be in that same timeslot on Saturday afternoons on Nine. I would have thought the WNBL would have wanted to avoid potential conflict with the men?

it may come as a surprise but to you womens basketball is-
A - already in conflict on several fronts with the mens comp, and
B- many people WILL watch the women without the need to watch the men

they also have a little something called replay for NBL..over and over and record.

just getting them ON free to air is a step in the right direction, and not as part of the mens package ,hopefully this might make BA see some sense and increase the length of the competition instead of trying to get it to fit into such a small window to leave the final sage of the NBL just for the men, because that was a total disaster IMO

Last year the WNBL broadcast ran into the NBL one, you'd think it will be the same this year. Would be odd if Fox were broadcasting basketball on two different channels.

I look forward to the missed open lay ups and airballs that women's basketball always promises.

Yep because men never miss layups or shoot airballs

not sure how long the wnbl will last in its current state.
Acting like a game a week is a big deal.

It is a big deal compared to what they had.

No it's not.
Going from 1 game a week on foxtel to 1 game a week streamed on both foxtel and sbs is not a great achievement.

This is a great achievement...

Also a boost to the salary cap...

When people were on here talking up the "landmark" deal that saw the NBL get the same amount of games on TV as last season, you wanna have a go at a deal that sees the WNBL go from zero FTA to games to nine?

Its a great start.

The nbl was marketing it as landmark, not the people here. To be fair they did go from a non commercial station to a commercial one, so there was some improvement despite the same volume of games.

I think the "landmark" aspect of the deal with Nine was more about the overall promotional partnership, rather than just the pure broadcast of games. Having said that, it's a term that gets thrown around a bit!

It was definitely a stretch for a deal where the NBL is still unlikely to make any money.
