Creek and Roberson

Seriously these guys are amazing but they need some help out there. Phoenix sit at 8-10 and have in my opinion 2 of the top 5 players in the league this season. Creek and Roberson are the best duo in the NBL they just need some help...

Creek:

22.2 PPG, 3.7 APG, 7.3 RPG, 50.2/37.1/78.4, 2.1 TOPG

Roberson:

20.6 PPG, 5.4 APG, 2.1 RPG, 47.9/45.5/92.2, 2.3 TOPG

Other notable players who have been talked about as a potential league MVP:

Cotton:

21.9 PPG, 3.6 APG, 3.9 RPG, 43.6/40.9/80.2, 2.1 TOPG

Machado:

16.1 PPG, 8.5 APG, 3.3 RPG, 43.6/40.9/86.6, 2.8 TOPG

Ware:

20.8 PPG, 3.8 APG, 2.8 RPG, 39.2/29.7/78.0, 2.1 TOPG

Randle:

20.6 PPG, 4.5 APG, 2.4 RPG, 46.3/35.8/90.8, 2.4 TOPG

Perth have Cotton, White and Kay. Adelaide have Randle, Griffin and Johnson. Cairns have Machado, Newbill and Oliver. Sydney are simply stacked.

Phoenix's next best player is probably Wesley, who has been very average since coming back only averaging 11 points at 42% to go along with a couple of turnovers an outing. He's looked slow and horrendous on the defensive end too.

Fun fact, If Creek and Roberson combine for above 45 points, the Phoenix are 5-2 (losing to Adelaide in Adelaide and losing to Perth at home). If the duo fail to do so Phoenix are 3-8.

The Phoenix have lost 6 games by 10 points or less and two by 12.

The front office really messed up with the signing of Benson. The man is an absolute spud at both ends of the floor. He looks like he doesn't care either. Surely he has to go. The other thing is with Wesley being out and performing below his normal standard on his return they've practically been playing with one import for the whole season so far. One would think that with one more good import, let alone two more (or Wesley rediscovering form), at least half those close losses become wins. With that they sit at 11-7 and comfortably in third.

Imagine if Phoenix had someone like Cam Oliver instead of Benson...

Sorry for the rant it just annoys the crap out of me that SEM are blessed with two absolute superstars of the competition and appear to be pissing such an opportunity down the drain. Would like to know everyone's thoughts on the matter.

Creek's been the MVP so far this season but I bet he wouldn't be happy SEM essentially blowing one of his few remaining prime years with their poor recruiting. The Benson situation has been really odd.

Creek taking a lot money out salary cap, you can't have it both ways, the more you earn the less someone else earns.

Next year should be a lot better for Phoenix.

Cut benson
Wesley becomes naturalised.

Team becomes...

Roberson / Adnam
Import / Madgen / Gibson
Creek / Stephens
Wesley /
Import / Pineau

Get rid of trist and acouth

Pickup an Aussie or kiwi sf and pf. Maybe te rangi(sf), jack white(pf)
Maybe another defensive centre, salt possibly.

...
F
Roberson / Adnam
Import / Madgen / Gibson / Hickey(DP)
Creek / Te Rangi / Stephens
Wesley / White / (DP)
Import / Pineau / Salt

A serious question did anyone expect any different? 2 strong players, plus a few hand me downs. On paper when they started great, but in real life, nope.

An expansion team from a decent capital like Melbourne should never struggle to attract talent. Especially after securing great Aussie talent in creek. No excuse koberulz.

Did they struggle to attract talent? Wesley got injured in the 1st 5 minutes of the 1st game. If that didn't happen, SEM have the 'big 3’ of Creek, Roberson & Wesley. Their only real recruitment error was Benson and their clear inability to get rid of him once it was clear he was not at the level required.

Agreed. New franchises have to be making a statement from the outset. Their statement is MOR nothing more. Not good enough.

Pretty sure no one has ever referred to John Roberson, Mitch Creek or Tai Wesley as 'middle of the road' smh

Things have gone a bit skew whiff for them because of the Wesley injury a few minutes into the opening game of the season.

But they've buggered up a fair bit of their recruiting. The Keith Benson situation. The Ben Madgen signing, the Kendall Stephens signing, the Terry Armstrong Next Stars signing, signing non-NBL level guys like Dan Trist and Deng Acuoth.

Yes, they were always going to have to sign some castoffs and rejects from other teams but they've made a few other bad signings outside of them.

Agree that Kendall looks like a bust at this stage, Ben's defence is not up to it. Deng is clearly a project, and yeah, Trist not a good signing. On the flip side though, I’m guessing they’re under budget. They’ve unearthed Dane Pineau, Kyle Adnam is having a great season and Gibbo is also having his best for a while. All up, they’ve done more right than wrong imo

Statistically two thirds of the players in the league weren't even available to them. They can't retain players because they don't have any players to retain. They have no culture to attract free agents.

People who thought they were going to be contenders right off the bat were delusional.

Melbourne the city is the culture! Plus you attract Mitch creek, who is going to have some scouts watching, which should have led to decent imports wanting to be seen as well.

You make it sound like they were trying to attract players to move to Townsville haha

Creek is being paid 500K and Roberson probably 200K or more. Benson was a cheapo import vut Wesley and Madgen wouldn't come cheap. They can't afford much more at the moment but they threw together a decent first time roster I reckon. Going into next year they could do with chasing an athletic 2/3 to pair with Creeky and an big that can score in the post. Pineau has been great but I'm sure he would be of more value coming off the bench, as would Madgen (Madgens defense is horrendous.)
