R1: Taipans v Kings Jan 16

Straight after the Bullets game, the fun in the sun continues with Cairns hosting the Kings in their "pop up" venue. I hadn't heard of a “pop up” until I saw my visa bill after my wife visited a few “pop ups” - ah, but think of all the money she saved.

Cairns have a fairly decent outfit with some of these players together for a while. If they towel flick their team mates in Brisbane, I don’t want to know how Cairns bonds. Wrestling crocodiles with Bobby Irwin? Machado is back and he was definitely a force to be reckoned with last season. Jawai was an immovable object in the post and with the Bogeyman sitting on the sidelines, you would have to say is possibly the largest presence on court this season. I’m tipping he might just be swatting balls like they’re FNQ mozzies to be #1 blocker this season. I must admit, this Cairns team might not have the razzmatazz of a Perf team, but looks to be the silent achiever of the NBL and with the cool head of Mike Kelly could upset a few teams.

Sydney would have to be the underdogs tonight. The Ware-Machado matchup will be a treat and I think the old tars of Kickert and Newley might be dragged around the court by some more nimble opponents. Don’t bother bringing the crown tonight, Cairns to crack open their season with a solid win and maybe have time for some antics in quarter 4.

Crickey! Cairns by 8

No Kickert tonight for the Kings, out with injury. Watched the Cairns trail games & Newbill is a big loss for them & I think they are going to struggle to make the playoffs .
Tonight's game will be close but I reckon the Kings will get up

New coach at Sydney, not easy in first season. I'm interested in what style game Sydney play, Weaver run and gun, Gleeson more structure or maybe a bit both. Both sides have plenty time together, if Oliver can be kept reasonably quiet the kings are a chance. Didi v Noi could be interesting, not a lot said about the new 5 man import at Sydney either. Bogut hard to replace. At home I’d say Cairns by two.

Ware is an expert flopper when touched on screens.

I hate that about him.

King is nz born, American citizen who wants Aus citizenship.

With nz lack of sgs I expect them to make a push given Aus has quite a few coming through.

Nz go 4-5 deep at positions 3-4-5 u23.
Issue for them going forward is 1-2. Lucky webster is young, Murray coming through, so too cameron. they need more at 1-2 but are still producing mainly sfs and pf's in nz and college.

" is King Australian yet or is he going to play for new Zealand"

His father, who I think is back coaching in NZ again, I believe has said that King will play for Australia.

Kings shot like busted arses, Ware 6/21, Didi 2/10. Kings import looks good, kings rotation as bad as Weavers. Cairns looking certain finalists. Machado had the last laugh, Casper got stop hogging it.

I have never seen the Kings take so many bad / rushed shots. That lost them a very winnable game.

Yeah, too many bad 3s from Didi in particular. Still, enjoyable game. Hunter was a pleasant surprise.

Didi and Ware should start on the bench, to much f..king dribble and poor shots. Didi defensively was crap as well, Noi toyed with him.

If you knew anything about basketball it wasn't the Coach who lost the Kings that game. Crawl back under your rock.

The last play wasn't much chop, only needed a two to win, all or nothing three from Casper.
Ware
DJ
Newley
Moller
Martin
This looks a better balance on today’s performance. Let Bruce run the second team and gives Didi more chance to hog the ball instead taking away from starters. Hunter unlucky on today’s play but Martin looked good.

Forde started at the Wildcats while Gleeson was still coaching the Crocs.

Forde appears to be more overrated than the tattoo sleeve he is trying to pass off as fashionable or believes makes him look tough. Players clearly have not brought in to his style of play and more efforts like last night will see us not make Finals and make his poor attempts at a Head Coaching career end quicker than you can say p!$$ off back to Perth with your talentless ass!

Indeed. Not sure why the 3 was required to be taken. That right there is poor coaching.

Just watched a replay, some home town cooking certainly down the stretch was woeful, as a neutral I thought kings were duded.

Been catching up first round on replay, it's going to be a great season.

Sydney just got get the guards passing more, hit a few threes would be nice as well. 1/5 DJ and Casper 1/11 not good from behind the arc.
