NBL1 Central Preliminary Final

And then there were 3. Sturt struggled in the last quarter last week to fall to Norwood after a tight three quarters while North were just too much for the Eagles to handle.

Sturts back court are the backbone to their success and Spear more than held up his end of the bargain but Daly was well held. North will play Dech, Staude and Williams through the guard positions and while Dech returned last week he still gave up plenty of points to Harris and Sturt have the edge in the guard battle.

Up front McVeigh has shot poorly the past couple of weeks but has been solid on the boards while Jimma Dau has been effective during the finals so far. Dowdell is solid inside and his matchup against Calligeros will be important. Turnbull and Fassos compliment the stars well and are capable scorers in their own right. North have an edge here, but not by much.

Rigoni is a 3 time coach of the year for a reason, and it'll matter in in this one where both sides are evenly matched.

Sturt by 6 for me.

What Rigoni's playoff record though? I’d dare say it’s not great?

I think North will win comfortably. Not enough offense on Sturt’s roster to compete.

Rigoni made the GF in 2016 I think it was and he only had DJ that year. He is a very highly credentialed and respected coach.

Suggest Deano is more credentialled and more successful with variety of teams. North into finals and winning - promised land

Dean only wins with high budget teams. What was his record like without McVeigh and took Dech to save day last week. And Rigoni had more than DJ, his son played well as well as White, Warbout, Rawson, Klaosen and CJ before he got fat and ended up at North.

The only real high budget teams finished 8th and 9th. Every NBL1 team comes at a cost. If that's the best comeback you can come up with for a team's success than you don't pay much attention to sport anywhere in the world.

Comeback? What are you on about?

The assertion was that Dean only wins with high budget teams, giving Rigoni has the edge coaching-wise, which doesn't make sense in this scenario when North's budget is considerably larger.

You assume North's budget it bigger.

Given 6 of the 10 are likely playing for $0 that's a big assumption. If you think Daly and Spear are playing for nothing you're also crazy.

Everyone wins at this lecel and above with some money being spent on their roster. Or you can be Eastern. Or Centrals women.

At least Dean wins. Some coaches can't win even with considerable more money in their budgets.

North spend isn't as big as it will be next year if the borders open. With borders not open they basically still had 3 players either import or restricted which is more than most teams did.

Not sure the coaches will be the story here - whoever wins the battle of Dech and McVeigh vs Daly and Spear will win.

Verle $3000 total ,
Jimma $2000 total
Dech 750-900 per game
McVeigh 750-900 per game
Dowdell $5000 total , plus coaching $$

Would all be getting paid something

My estimates are next to their names

Sturt pretty cheap and Norwood flush

Cj would be highest paid in the league , would be package with coaching etc not just straight cash from club

Fact: Drmic was going to play for KB when he got coaches job then came back and said Southern offered him $30k, could it be matched. Needless to say it wasn't. From kB himself.

Didn't their U18 boys get like 4 boys to move to the NBA program in Canberra last year?

Most of their D1/2 boys teams are in the top 3. NBL1 mens team in the Grand Final. At our club there are constant murmurs of boys and families saying "we are wanting to get into North next season because they are winning and have kids going to high levels". Sure they are not perfect but seems to be the best run program from the outside looking in.

No 4 did not.

Wouldn't know about their 1/2 boys teams BSA have taken down all Friday night comps. Such an amazing organisation. But parents and basketball faithful are complaining for no reason at all.

Well done to both North teams led by two dedicated, passionate and skilled coaches.

Their juniors on the other hand, have issues. They're not the target club they were 2-3 years ago.

People are too heavily focussed on the "stars" and do not appreciate the loyalty and importance of good role players such as Max, Schild, Spud. These type of players are the core of good consistent teams. They are team first players. There is a reason why these players have had a long career. Some of our younger players could learn about the team game and loyalty by watching the little things these role players do for their team and their teammates

And the reward for their hard work over many many years is to be part of the biggest game in local basketball each year. Spud has experienced it many times and now its Schild's turn next week. If it is his last game what could be a better way to go out.

Rigoni is a good coach, everyone who works with him backs that up. But the Sturt era of recuiting, poaching & being hand fed the best talent in the state is done. Yes they have good teams but the brand is waivering and without Mesecke they don't do the work in schools and filling gaps with talent from elsewhere. Sturt coaches have always over achieved due to the gap in talent.

It's near impossible to gauge a good coach from the outside.

The League has a number of good coaches, including Rigoni, Nyberg, Simons, Milat. But only the players and fellow coaches who have worked with them truly know just how capable they are.
