WNBL Round 7

Fingers crossed that we can get more than 0% of the games over the line this round:

Wed 6:30 - Southside Flyers v Perth Lynx [Kayo]

Fri 7:30 - UC Capitals v Perth Lynx [Kayo Freebies]

Sat 5:00 - Melbourne Boomers v Southside Flyers [ABC & Fox Sports]

Mon 6:30 - Perth Lynx vs Melbourne Boomers [Kayo Freebies]

Plenty of Perth Lynx action for anyone with Kayo, all 3 of which are conveniently scheduled to tip off during weekday work hours in WA :/

Should the Lynx "load manage" one of those games?

I feel like Omicron might load manage it for them.
But otherwise they have freshness on their side, and are a fairly young team too.
2 days followed by 3 days should be ok I think. Maybe just try to keep a lid on Sami's minutes.

Close game, but not a particularly good one.
Relieved to escape with a win after all the blown layups. Awful stuff. I didn't rate Sami's 1st half very highly either but she made up for it big time.
If the refs could stop getting sucked in so hard by M.Rocci's flops that'd be appreciated.

Great seeing Wallace starting to look like her old self.

Kristy was the only one with gas still in the tank by the end and the only one playing decent defense the whole game.

Flyers should have won it for me, some bonhead plays by the Roccis. Both probably the fastest 2 in the league but scared to drive. Reminds me of Lavey a few years back when she offered nothing but taking the ball over half way.

"Sami not a great wnbl start"

Young's underwhelming start at PG has led to Sami having to do a lot of ball carrying and distributing, yes her shot is deserting her, but she is being forced to do a bit of everything.

Young has been a bad signing for any foreign team, just for the pay cheque. Maybe they should do some research. Might have been a package deal with Notre dame buddy.
At this point, burrows would give you more than young.

Burrows is coming off a really bad back injury where she was sidelined for months. She probs won't get many minutes this season unless on with the DPs in a blow out. She is pals with Petrik though, so he hopefully gives her a run soon.

He seems to prefer Ciabattoni over Burrows at the point guard spot. I don't love Ciabbatoni at the point and her defensive is pretty average though, and wouldn't mind seeing a healthy Burrows at least get a go there at some stage. Not sure it will happen though.

Williams isn't a WNBL calibre player, particularly defensively.

If the Burrows injury thing is true then it makes a lot of sense IMO.

I'm a big fan of Chibba in general. She's typically very smart & very composed. (Hasn't been at her best yet but this was only Perth's 2nd game).
Anything that reduces the load on our starting backcourt trio is good with me - especially in a compressed schedule scenario.

Lot of wnbl players that aren't really wnbl level but the Australian talent stocks aren’t great atm.

I think the calibre of players has dropped too. Not having Centre of Excellence in WNBL anymore seems to have reduced our stocks.

I think Chibba is a great NBL1 level player but I'm not really sold on her at WNBL. However, she's definitely solid off the bench and has decent size and experience. I thought Taylor was meant to be the point guard, but I feel like the others seem to carry the ball more than her.

Personally I think wnbl season should be moved to gain back players from aflw.

They'll be able to play both without overlap.

You’d gain back a few players and stop those in the future having to pick 1 or the other.

Being in Melbourne the amount of front and back page the AFLW is getting is as good as the Mens comp. It is saturated and there seems to be a real push from the media to treat the comp with the same emphasis as AFLM. Add to this the fact that WNBL have lost all momentum (they do have Megan Hustwaite doing one weekly column now) and you see very little on WNBL now. Maybe a 15 liner at best. AFLW is clearly gearing towards going full time and playing before the Men once all 18 teams are in. WNBL can't compete with that machine, they need to suck it up, swallow the pride and move the season in the future.

The WNBL actually lose money...the current set up is the tip of the iceberg. Mid tier ALFW girls will be on 100k plus within 5 years and the AFLW media will be saturating every outlet, WNBL is the green grocer sitting next to the Coles at the moment. Stubborn and full of fight but not in the same league...LK may save them in time by affiliating and playing before the women before the men.
They made progress by moving so they weren't competing with AFLM, now AFLW is here during the off season they only thing that will save them from drowning is the AFLW playing before the AFLM IMO. If you were in charge of marketing $$ for your company with a strategy to invest in girls sports it would be AFLW every day of the week because you hit the womens and mens market all in one.

Mabery and Whitcomb are such fire hoses it makes it very hard to integrate multiple pieces and when its off its not pretty. Scherf is a pleasant and notable exception. Add to this Mabery looked heavily targetted on top of being cooked.

Respectfully, Ernst seems like a net loss to any team she plays on. Understand the signing though, given they will likely struggle for warm bodies at points in the season.

Ernst is one who excites you on paper, but doesn't actually bring much value to the team. Her size is redundant because she barely uses it, preferring to settle for 3s almost exclusively. Plus she can't or won't defend. Has a huge amount of talent but doesn't seem to want to do anything other than shoot triples.

Mabrey is painful to watch and is all about herself. Another one who is talented but has a me first mentality.
