The NBL is alive and well

The Adelaide 36ers had a historic victory shooting 24 3s en route to victory over Booker, Paul and the Suns

They returned to Australia

Then the Tasmania Jackjumpers walked into their arena last night and destroyed them

Tonight, the mighty 3-0 Kings and their 14(?) Game winning streak up against the lowly Taipans missing their best player

A energetic defensive effort sees the Taipans shut Sydney down and win

Now, United, after being decimated last week by Sydney, defeats the 3-0 Perth in RAC Arena

3 huge upsets

Up and coming Aussie bigs Humphries and Pinder huge tonight

Feels like NBL is alive and well

You just know the bookie taskforce is going to be sniffing any large bets this weekend.

Yeah what would the odds have been of these 3 results in a multi

Around 60-65 to 1 I think

chill out Perthworld - poster is allowed to enjoy, title of the thread is worth discussing ie NBL is alive and well.

To be honest I was more pleased with Cairns getting the win over Sydney who are trying to develop the franchise based on arrogance which they can do with deep pockets but no class.

Perth, United, Sydney, Adelaide are the obvious standouts as far as talent goes.

Thought Brisbane would be going better than they are.

Hoping to see continued improvement from Cairns, JJs, Hawks, and Breakers to make it a really competitive season.

He's not wrong, it’s absolutely absurd and even know 36ers got trounced, I love the evenness in this league.

If Cairns and Tassie and the Hawks can be competitive like this, it’ll be a ridiculous season

There are ways for NBL minnows to compete, and compensate for their smaller budgets

Astute import selections- like the year Cairns had Machado, Oliver and Newbill

Coaching, structure and culture. The JJs last year

Someone in the JJs vs Cairns thread commented that Cairns would have some huge games and some poor games. Their 2nd quarter vs JJs illustrated what they're capable of. 2 games later they've followed that script. I don't expect consistency but clearly they're capable of excellent basketball with that level of defense and guys who can score in bunches like Deng, Hogg.

And the emergence of Pinder is something to behold. Hard to believe what I'm seeing. If he keeps going like this, like JLA before him, he'll be a chance of going from end of bench to all NBL over 2 seasons

At the end of the day, the Athletics never won the World Series though....

Agee LV will also add that as a JJ supporter, very happy with the imports for this year - Magette, Doyle and Kelly are very solid. Believe there is more upside than last years imports and more scope for improvement.

No arguments from me, just remember we're dealing with LV after a Melbourne win so it's mandatory and tradition to have a dig at him.

It definitely is the best result so far with the storyline from up north shaping up to be a good one.

I'm finding myself enchanted by your beautifully succinct description of Paul Smith's Kings.

They have but I assume you mean since the moneyball era?

It's a sobering thought.

Fair call Perthworld understand re LV and Melbourne etc.

As a JJs supporter I will keep my powder dry re Smith's Kings, time will tell re sustained success. Perth have a lock on that and there is no disputing Melbourne as in the city is the heartland of basketball.

Humble but hungry the Kings organisation are not.

The NBL is in great shape, but the referring really needs to be looked at once and for all. They have no feel for the game, and it's been this way for many years. But like the NFL with the 'any given Sunday’ vibe, the NBL is much the same.

The NBL is in good shape as far as competitiveness goes but I think we're seeing a backwards step in standard of play. A lot of talent around but I think a disrupted and injury-filled off-season has led to the first rounds feeling more like the Blitz than they should.

True KET, it's been a very long time since Perth, United or Sydney won a title

And NZ who had the NZ national team plus a couple of quality imports providing the cream

2009 to be precise, was the last team other than Perth, Sydney, Melbourne or NZ

But they had the same charateristics as Melbourne- big basketball city, big budget.

07 was the Eddie Groves paid-in-casino-chips Bullets

Basically Adelaide in 2002 was the last time a team from a smaller city, without a massive budget won the title

And arguably they were lucky cos Gaze broke his leg when the Tigers were top 2 mid season.

Did Titans have any injuries in those playoffs too? Can't quite recall

Sixers used to spend big back in those days.

Wollongong 2001 are possibly the only side which fit your criteria since the semi-pro days of the league ended.
