Transgender athlete not allowed to join NBL1

Transgender player Lexi Rodgers is saddened by a Basketball Australia decision to deny her application to join a women's semi-professional league but says it is not the end of her journey as an athlete.

Reaction to the decision began flowing in on Tuesday morning, including from basketball legend Andrew Gaze, who backed Basketball Australia’s process but said he was disappointed for Rodgers, and the Queer Sporting Alliance, which promoted the hashtag "#letlexiplay" on social media.

On Tuesday morning, a source with knowledge of the decision, who was not authorised to disclose the result publicly, told The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald that a three-person panel had determined Rodgers would not be able to play for the Kilsyth Cobras in the WNBL1 South basketball league. Basketball Australia released a statement later on Tuesday confirming that Rodgers was ineligible to play elite-level basketball.

“The balance of inclusivity, fairness and the competitive nature of sport will always be a complex area to navigate, and we thank those involved who have maintained integrity and respect throughout the process,” the statement said.

Here's the BA statement:

An expert panel convened by Basketball Australia (BA) has determined transgender athlete Lexi Rodgers is ineligible to play elite level basketball, including for the Kilsyth Cobras in the NBL1 South competition this season.

The expert panel was led by Dr Peter Harcourt (BA Chief Medical Officer, Commonwealth Games Medical Advisor), Suzy Batkovic OLY (BA Board Member, three-time Olympian) and Associate Professor, Diana Robinson.

BA assesses eligibility of prospective elite level transgender athletes on a 'case-by-case' basis, accounting for and balancing a range of factors, and has implemented this process on behalf of Basketball Victoria in this matter.

As the governing body, we acknowledge we’re still on a path of education and understanding. To aid us in developing our framework, Lexi will provide feedback and advice from her experiences.

The balance of inclusivity, fairness and the competitive nature of sport will always be a complex area to navigate, and we thank those involved who have maintained integrity and respect throughout the process.

Basketball Australia Director, former Olympian and panel member, Suzy Batkovic, said:

"Firstly, on behalf of Basketball Australia I’d like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Lexi for her cooperation, understanding and patience throughout this process - it’s a complex space that continues to evolve," Batkovic said.

“While Lexi is understandably disappointed with the outcome, I know she’ll continue to support her NBL1 South team throughout the season and be an active member of the basketball community.

“As we continue to develop our own framework for sub-elite and elite competitions, we understand the need to have a clear process and continual education within all layers of the sport so we can best support players, coaches, clubs, associations and the wider basketball community.

“I also want to make it clear because it’s important, that while this particular application was not approved based on criteria for elite competition, Basketball Australia encourages and promotes inclusivity at community level.”

Lexi and the Kilsyth Cobras have been informed of the decision.

Common sense has prevailed in this instance.

However biological sex is fundamentally important when it comes to women's health, women’s sports and women's spaces. We have to protect their rights, as much as those of others, and not instead of others.

Absolutely correct LC
Inclusivity should not be at the exclusion of biological females and their rights to safe comfortable and fair spaces

I'm sure in time transgender sports will have their own platform that will be well supported , but biological sexes need their own sport be it team or individual

On 2 positive notes it means one adult human female doesn't lose her spot on the team and rest of the squad doesn't have to watch a woman walking around the changerooms with her C&B hanging out

Drexler,

Not all trans athletes have their (C&B as you've so eloquently put it) anymore. I would argue that it is highly likely that in this case they have already had the necessary procedure.

It does look that all parties have acted with integrity here. Something which you have not.

According to the Hersld Sun article, they only decided a year ago that they are a woman, so I'm guessing they haven’t had any surgery as yet.

Less than 25% of all transgenders ever have any form of surgical/ medical alterations according to multiple surveys world wide, those that do , the largest proportion is breast implants and hormone therapy, very few actually have their gential areas changed .

The reasons stated vary from financial, to health risks to wanting to keep the option to revert back to birth assigned gender ...….not as clear cut as you'd think, no pun intended

Shotblooker,

Agreed that we don't know the entire situation and hence my suggestion that BA and the athlete involved have seemed to have acted with integrity. It may very well be the case that it has/will happen as it has/will not.

You are talking a historical figure. It could also be argued that that figure is increasing annually including in children where there has been a 200% rise in surgery over the last 10 years. And that there will be further increases over time as it become more accepted and prices decrease.

And footloose.

Considering the Herald Sun is owned by Murdoch. And the openly agreed lies they have been allowed to produce over seas. I am not sure you can take them at their word about what has happened when. In other articles they have talked about it the transition beginning during lockdown, which could be up to 3 years ago.

I wonder how many people read this and are "Really!!!" concerned?

Any kid under 12 changing their gender is a concern. Parents being left out of the conversation is a massive concern. Mental illness is changing the boundaries. This will be a nightmare for many children in later life who realise they have made a big mistake and can't reverse it. When you see the protests overseas, most of the protesters look generally confused and being told this is natural isn't helping most of them. There is no real answer but society will being paying for this, and the trans with their decision for decades to come.

Considering 17 in every 1000 children born do have some level of intersex condition at birth. And trans or non-binary people have been a part of society for a millennia.

It probably more common than you'd think.

Really! .... May want to recheck those figures it's 1.7 not 17, and it’s not as clear it as your trying to make it, it will never be "normal" and yes men dressing and acting like they are women has indeed been going on since historical records began, BUT they were not encouraging children to chemically change their genetic makeup, there in sits the difference between this current madness and “normal”

“Anne Fausto-Sterling s suggestion that the prevalence of intersex might be as high as 1.7% has attracted wide attention in both the scholarly press and the popular media. Many reviewers are not aware that this figure includes conditions which most clinicians do not recognize as intersex, such as Klinefelter syndrome, Turner syndrome, and late-onset adrenal hyperplasia. If the term intersex is to retain any meaning, the term should be restricted to those conditions in which chromosomal sex is inconsistent with phenotypic sex, or in which the phenotype is not classifiable as either male or female. Applying this more precise definition, the true prevalence of intersex is seen to be about 0.018%, almost 100 times lower than Fausto-Sterling s estimate of 1.7%.
