Broncos Drop Exhibition To Australia
11/9/2006

POMONA Cal Poly Pomona's women's basketball team caught an Australian Institute of Sport team hungry for a victory Thursday night.

The Broncos competed well, but fell to the touring Australian team, 79-56, Thursday in an exhibition game in Kellogg Gym. The Broncos did not fare well on the boards against the much-taller Australian team and were outrebounded, 57-26.

Cal Poly Pomona got a strong game from Porsche' Kirksey (Jr., Los Angeles, Junipero Serra HS), who had a team-high 13 points and three rebounds. Ashley Moody (Jr., Carson, King Drew HS) had 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.

AIS got 13 points and five rebounds from Cayla Francis and 10 points each from Rebecca Schatz and Louella Tomlinson.

AIS led at halftime, 37-25.

This was the eighth stop on a West Coast tour for AIS, which is a collection of the top junior players from Australia. The center is a specialized educational and training institution providing coaching for elite junior and senior athletes in a number of sports. It was established in 1981 after Australia failed to win a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. This was the first win for AIS, which played mostly against Division I teams before Thursday.

AIS shot 47 percent, while Cal Poly Pomona made just 31.3 percent of its attempts. The Broncos, though were 5-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. Lauren Kitaguchi (So., Diamond Bar, Diamond Bar HS) hit three of the 3-pointers to account for all nine of her points.

Ally Smith (Jr., Pasco, WA, Southern Utah) had seven points, five rebounds and three steals for the Broncos.

The Broncos struggled from the free-throw line, making just 11 of 22 attempts, while AIS was 22-of-28.

Cal Poly Pomona will open its regular season against Henderson State in the Alaska Fairbanks Tournament on Friday, Nov. 24.
