Smyths contingency plan

As stated in another thread, Newley will be asked on Monday whether he plans to suit up for the sixers or head abroad.

In the same article in todays advertiser Phil is quoted saying

"Look, Brad is our priority but we have to have a contingency plan in case he has a good opportunity in Europe"

"We have spoken to a couple of players who understand the situation but in fairness to them, they've got to make decisions too."

"We all need to get on with it."

Any ideas as to who these 2 players may be?

At least it seems that by this time next week we should know for sure.

Markovic? Trahair?

Who else isn't signed and is a guard?

U wouldn't touch Trahair under any circumstances. Would have been right at home last year though!

Skip, on the NBL website it says:

Returning: Shawn Redhage*, Jeff Dowdell, Ben Hunt, Peter Crawford, Adam Caporn, Brad Robbins, Paul Rogers
Departing: Tony Ronaldson, Justin Brown, Darren Brooks*,
Undetermined: Damien Ryan
Free agents signed: Alex Loughton (Gandia Basquet - Spain), Rashad Phillips* (Lacplesa Alus Valmiera - Latvia), Mike Homik (Waikato Pistons - NZNBL)

According to the players returning & Free agents signed, that is 10 players and that doesn't include Ryan. Is this correct?

Considering that we already have

Maher
Sutton
Ng
Davidson
Copeland

Would Phil be definelty looking at guards? Could possibly be looking more for a forward?

Davidson / Sutton
Maher / Ng
Chappell / Copeland
Ballinger / ????
Cooper / Dench

Looking at a guard and a forward.

I reckon Ryan would be a mistake - instant chemistry problems I'd guess.

Ryan has told me personally that he was contacted about the position, and he is considering it or similar to Newley going overseas. I guess you will find out Monday.

A Guard and a Forward you beleive Isaac.....that would be 13 points available, so maybe an 8 & 5 or 7 & 6? Obviosuly you have an inkling as to who these players are Isaac, can you tell us if they played in the NBL last year(as I know you cant reveal names)?

well considering that Matt Knight came out of the US college system, {after being at the AIS i suspect} and he is most definitely not the only Ausi college senior....
i.e. player currently without a team... just check out that web site AUsis in the US who were graduating, i.e. seniors..
those guys are only 3 points ?!? grab two of em.. !

I was looking at the Free agent list and the best guys with nbl experience who are availabale seem to be Damien Ryan, Aaron Trahair, Frank Drmic and then guys like Oakley, Rice, Clint Reed and Adam Quick, is it any of those guys?? i guess it could be one of the college players or even a guy like Moore who is playing in Europe, who would people prefer, i think Ryan would be my top preference, and i guess Trahair or Drmic would be the next best, or a younger guy like a Clint Reed may be worth a look as would a college guy, i dont think Stefan Blascynzki has signed anywhere yet maybe he could be worth a look??
Will be interesting, i hope Newley does stay with the 36ers though and then we wont have to worry about other options

Please not Dr Mic - I think we should have a moratorium from signing anyone who ever played for the South East-side North Victoria Melbourne Spectre Saints Giant Titan Magic (except Rob Rose ... and Scottie Ninnis ... oh and Wheeler) - actually just any Victorian born South East-side North Victoria Mlebourne Spectre Saint Giant Titan Magic

That said what do you think Andrew Parkison is up to?

I would've thought that rather than a "moratorium from signing anyone who ever played for the South East-side North Victoria Melbourne Spectre Saints Giant Titan Magic", we would have a moratorium on signing guys that spent more time in the last 4 years eating pies than he spent on his game - and that would definately rule out Drmic ...

Drimic is another one of those guys who lost their game in Europe. Unless you are a big forward, Europe can be a slight risk, mind you it did not stop Moore loosing his game in Europe also...
The backups need to be like Newley; young, skilled, and versatile.
Stefan Blascynzki fits that bill by all accounts, although i have not seen him myself.
I am sure they would not sneeze at getting a small forward that could play a bit of guard also.
Skip you are right, the 36ers do lack front court depth. If a forward gets injured, Copeland is the next forward off the bench.

Who has "lost their game in Europe"? Not Black, Ryan, Jones, Penney, Cattalini, Rogers, etc?

To be fair Rogey did not play enough minutes in Europe to lose his game.

Good point Isaac, {i also forgot about Black,} yes quite a few players have improved their games in Europe, i guess we sometimes focus on the failures too much.

I think some here subscribe to a little wishful thinking because they'd like to see Newley stay in Adelaide. Add Dickel to that Euro list. Maybe Markovic too.

If Newley has a career-ending injury one season down the track, a year in Europe for the extra cash and experience would be more useful than a year here.

Botis says that Ryan is off the list as he has signed to pay in Italy.

Looks like the big option as back up then with Chappel switching to the guard spot.

Good point Isaac - I think the lure of some big coin in Europe next season would have to factor in the decision in a very big way - The old bird in the hand scenario. A big injury is unfortunately a concern for any professional athlete - and Brad Hill has shown how easily ones career can be upset.

Id personally love to see Newley in Europe next year.....just so the Blaze may have a silly chance against the 6ers!

In saying that - its a massive decision that has to be made and I hope that he is getting some solid advice from those around him - and is then able to make a clear cut decision after weighing up all possibilities.
