Erin Phillips in Alpha: Progress in women's sport?

(Mod: Initial title was "How far women's sport has come...")

Disappointing to see Erin Phillips lose her kit for the sake of $$$. One would have thought the days of women having to expose themselves for money were well and truly over, given the growth in player salaries, particularly with Vince Marino on board at the Lightning. Considering (at a guess) she makes about $50K for the Lightning, $10K for Centrals, plus Opals payments, her WNBA gig and various other promo work/junior coaching work, does she really need the extra cash? Last time I checked, $60K-plus for a 21/22-year-old without a university degree is pretty unheard of. Nothing like selling your soul...

Way to pass judgement on someone you know nothing about. Well done. Sure you feel real good about yourself.

Assuming the only reason she did it was for cash?

How shallow are you?

Every thought that she might have wanted to do it?

Male sports stars do revealing shots for a mag or newspaper and not a word is said.

How far have our opinions come? Not far I am guessing.

Its gone backwards. Watched the sturt-woodville womens game on the weekend and the men were on the court warming up as the women's players were trying to shake hands dodging them. No respect at all.

Join the Defence Force - You can earn 60K after 4 years in the system being a 21/22/23 year old without a degree. Even more if you are overseas or on a navy ship.

ANON182106. IMO it has nothing to do with a lack of respect but purely a matter of time. Same thing happened at the Forestville-Sturt game. The fact is that there is often not a lot of time between games and the men's team need to get on the court so that the clock can start for the warmup and ensure that games start on time or as near as possible. I have seen the reverse happen where the men's game is scheduled first and the women go on court for the warmup as soon as the men's game finishes.

SS. If it was a guy you wouldn't care. Sounds like a bit of jealousy. IMO Erin looked great and I will be interested to see the full spread. You should note that other female athletes earning more than Erin (Lauren Jackson) have done this as well and been even more revealing, and no-one complained about them. Get a life!

re: Erin Phillips in Alpha: How far women's sport

People complain that there is not enough publicity about basketball and here is a chick who is promoting herself but, in turn, is promoting women's basketball. What the hell is wrong with that? What is the old saying - all publicity is good publicity!

Nothing wrong with what Erin Philips has done. Good on her and I look forward to my copy.

I still dream of seeing Sam Woosman in a similiar fashion.

Yeah, I'm really shallow...like that one time I stripped down so that I would earn even more $$. I am also extremely judgemental, which is one of my many attributes, jealous and in the process of writing my application to join the Navy while also looking for a life.
As for promoting women's basketball, is a half-naked woman really the way we want to go?
Also, I must shake the graphic designer's hand who works at Alph...never have I seen her thighs, legs and arms look so slim.

I will quote the great Beavis and Butthead

"How does she expect to sell any records if she doesn't have any cleavage?"

why do female beach volleyballers get around in very small bikini's when they could just as easliy play in shorts and a top?

why did the wnbl move to lycra body suits? why did the first lightning team have see through shorts on?

bottom line sex sells and that is that.

She looked hot - what was the problem? we all know she's an awesome basketballer, why not raise your profile? It's not like she posed for playboy. No one complains when athletes nude up for Black and White Magazine because its 'arty'.

I'd say more endorsements will come from this which is great for her and wome's basketball.

ss - if you don't like it, don't buy the mag. Simple.

I think the point is that women still have to sell their souls to get the same respect their male counterparts take for granted.

Exactly Doc! Stop preaching utter crap SS and get back to church! It's not like she has gone out and glassed her boyfriend or taken cocaine and abused the cops...oh hang on that blokes the greatest footballer in the history of the game, so it's ok! I think the Skyhooks put it nicely..."i'm livin' in the seventies..." Get with the times SS!

Did anyone critisise Laura Summerton when she posed in the Black and White magazine? Did anyone question whether Laura "had to expose herself for money"? It is not as if Erin posing for this article has put the sport of women's basketball in to disrepute!!

Alpha is one of the few magazines i purchase every month and i must say that it is by far the best, unbiased sporting magazine around. Flip though any old edition and u will see 20 different sports covered, featuring both mens and womens. I think this is the perfect magazine for erin to pose in, they always do very tasteful "Alpha Female" photoshoots and this article will greatly increase not only erin's profile but the profile of basketball in general. Its a huge step forward i say.

I don't think they have slimmed her down - heels make a lot of difference. My legs look great in heels and fishnets.

Hells yes they slimmed her down and made her look taller!!!!!!!

See her in real life and she is short and a stocky body of muscle- always has been!

They made her look good- but I guess they did what they do in all the mags these days so why wouldn't they do it for her too.

I don't think she did it for the $$.

is it really anyone's business why she did it?
it is very tastefully done, didn't Rachel Sporn and a few other female b/ballers do it for Black and White magazine?

"go girls" have to get publicity for women's b/ball any way we can.
