Having 1 player outside the salary/points cap?

Someone on here mentioned the other day that every team should be allowed to spend money on a player outside the caps (australian or import) in the NBL. Obviously the NBL and clubs have clearly financially been struggling so it's nothing they would do in the near future if not at all, but is it an idea that should be looked at? It would bring alot more entertainment and skill to the league, but could also ruin teams sticking with a core group as players would only come for the money. What problems could you guys see if that was to come into play? or Benefits?

someone will fork out big $ for a marquee player and then everyone (poorer teams) will cry foul.
Imagine the team NZ or Perth could build?

It would become a pissing contest between wealthy franchise owners leaving out the community model teams which are even more important these days in terms of the league surviving.

Yes, as much as I'd love to see this, I agree with Mystro that it's just going to create a bigger gap between the haves and have nots since it's probably only NZ and Perth and maybe 1 or 2 others that could afford the extra for a star player to push their salary bill well beyond the cap.

Unless there was a luxury tax or some description, in which case I think it's possible that opposing teams would allow it and take both the luxury tax payment and a visiting drawcard player to improve crowds twice a season.

For what they can afford they actually wont get anyone that much better than the other teams can afford, you need millions to get guys who'd make a big difference in the NBL, so wouldnt affect competitiveness so long as you reduced the cap so Perth and NZ had to sacrifice a little bit with the other players they have.

On the other hand it may help get some marketable names in, so I see it as only as positive.

^ The Breakers Major Sponsor is a Casino and Events Centre (Sky City) and their owners are wealthy.

I'm sure they could find a couple of mill for the right player if they wanted to/were allowed.
And like NZ need any better players than what are available under the current salary cap.

I dont think they would see that as money well spent given they already have a good side for that much and are getting regular sellout crowds.

In a 40 minute league would an ex NBA player get a rest at all.

I'm asking in all seriousness as watching the Wildcats last season it felt AFL influenced that nobody stayed on court with much fatigue. Would this ex NBA player play more than 30 minutes a game, would it be worth it?

If it comes about I hope whomever it is, has a great work ethic, helps our youngsters and promotes the game like Johnny Flynn did.

More Johnny Flynn's would be a thrill

What about a reduced salary cap (maybe in the ballpark of $800-900k), allow one import within the cap, and allow for one (somewhat) unrestricted signing outside the cap - an automatic 10-point player.

Not that I'm necessarily in favor of the idea, but I'm certain it's feasible and would probably only advantage Perth and perhaps Melbourne: two markets which could use marquee players to increase the NBL's exposure.
