NBL Green League

What are your thoughts on the NBL approaching the Federal Govt and getting them to either sponsor the league or get a massive grant to turn the NBL Green?

I have been watching the NBA green ads and we could do the same thing - solar panels on stadium roofs, recycling stations, low flow water taps in restrooms, teams getting energy smart cars, plant trees in the community, clean up Australia Day type events, use recyclable paper & wrappers and generally move towards reducing the NBL carbon footprint.

Thoughts?

Would be nice, but the Federal government's biscuit barrel has got crumbs in it.

Nice idea in theory but how much control does any of the teams or the NBL have over their venues?

As a concept? Interesting.
While the Libs are in power? Forget about it.

NBL rent all there stadiums, so they don`t have much chance of that. Adelaide and Perth seem to be the only ones who have good deals in place.

Its a good idea. But how do players get to games?

Ah Plane/Bus..seems a bit hypocritical.

So can't avoid that.

But theres still some good ideas you could take from the NBA, which would be cost-free/cheap as chips:

- Like Portland have done, could have a "Bike to the game" event where the fans (and players) meet up at a location and all ride to the game (instead of driving)

- Get fans to bring their old phones to the game and recycle them -- and the winner gets a huge prize (could get funding from Govt for this)

- Run a "3's for trees" program: Communities get to plant "X" amount of trees for every 3 pointer they hit.

- Or could go really drastic and have an outdoor game (god knows where). Which would save a lot of electricity costs.

NBL won't get funding for any initiative as the people at the top love eggball and waste money on those codes. The worst example was when Brisbane needed a few $100k to survive yet the money went to a local rugby union club as a local MP had a boner for it. Later he was prosecuted for throwing money at it but the damage was done in terms of the Bullets continuing.

With Tony Abbott & the Libs in power? Unlikely, however there could be some extra funding thrown the NBL's way if they started delivering mass at half-time.

A budgie smuggling contest perhaps, to raise funds all those poor budgies out there?

Macdub: great points and some really simple things to do there... The bike idea would help us in Townsville with parking too! ;)

Don't some airlines have a scheme with reducing carbon footprint? Maybe there is something that can be done. How about each team using and promoting alternate energy options like sucrogen fuels; fuel made from sugar.

I'm sure there are a multitude of things that can be done under this scheme, some may not be done by a few clubs, but others can. I think it is a great way of finding an edge to get into the media too... Plenty of tree planting, bike riding, clean up Australia Day, recycling, school sessions, alternate energy etc

It just could work!
