NBA Summer League - 40 minute games

So they're playing 40 minute games at Summer League and some of the scores are pretty low.

So there's that, for the NBL haters who say "the scoring is so low compared to NBA".

Tell it to the people who don't think it's bad NBL went from 48 to 40mins.

NBL was so entertaining in the 48 minute era.

The worst thing are people on here who don't admit it.

Ewww 40. LK get onto reversing this please. It ruined stats too.

The NBA is 48 minutes though. I mean comparing NBL to summer league is probably still being nice to the NBL, but you can't ckmpare the scores of two leagues with different timing.

NBL has gone through the roof since it went to 40 minutes, shame it took them so long to realise what a successful change it would be ;-)

Go read "The case for the 40-minute game" (http://grantland.com/features/the-case-40-minute-nba-game/) to understand why some basketball fans think NBA games are too long.

A couple of quotes to give you a flavour:

"Those 48 minutes stretch longer than ever now, [with] approximately 967 timeouts that interrupt any given nationally televised game."

"A three-hour NBA game goes against everything basketball is supposed to be — a fast-paced ballet of whirring athleticism, back-and-forth action, and fantastic players looping around the floor in coordinated geometric patterns."

Maybe some of this thinking is behind the 40 minute games in Summer League?

That part is especially true for me. It changes an otherwise average NBA game to be extremely tedious to watch.

That's due to LK.

Imagine LK era plus 48, would be perfect combo. NBL 48 minute game didn't have crazy amount of timeouts like NBA so it was perfect. Sigh.

No one watched the NBL in the 2000s when it was 48 minutes. Crowds started improving again from the season it went to 40 minutes, must have been the change in length of quarters ;-)

No, they didn't. NBL wasn't watched when 48 became 40. It was actually the low point of the league as BA had taken control - hence 40. The clubs soon found out it's better to be a private league. You're mis remembering the timeline.

It just took a few seasons for the fans to adjust. Once they did they came flocking back because the compact 40 minute format is much better because fewer bench minutes are needed. Plus it works better for tv. It is better in every way other than for the dumbarses who think a higher total score means a better game. Those idiots would probably prefer 80 minute games so that someone can crack 200.

Yes they did. From 2009 to 2013 the average crowd rose from 3300 to just over 5000. Since then the increase has been less than that to about 6400.

That isn't due to 40 mins though.

It was NBL going from BA back to private, Wildcats moving to Perth Arena, NZ and Melb Utd to larger arenas and finally LK coming board.

I feel like 48min would be great in terms of a boost in stats/scores etc, but the more I think about it the ~2hr package the NBL puts together seems quite convenient. When watching sports like NBA/AFL etc I feel they can drag on a bit sometimes and taking up close to 3hrs is a fair bit of time. Around 2hrs total can keep thing quick and convenient while hopefully still leaving an audience satisfied and entertained.

The conundrum is 48minute games are so much better value live where you can offer a better product albeit crowd may be tired earlier in games (more game time left when their enthusiasm is beginning to drop) whilst NBA games are proof that 48 minutes can drag on.

Nah stuff it I want 48 minute games so we can showcase our superstars for longer

Improvement was well underway before any of those things happened.

No way. Was only going backwards before those things happened.

There is a strangely fervent group of 48 minute haters which makes them say and argue stupid things. It's baffling.

I don't get it either. Who doesn't want 8 minutes of bonus basketball? Yet those same people probably get all excited about overtime.

Maybe when they finally allow unlimited imports the players will be fit enough to run out a 48 minute game

How come summer league is 40min? I thought they would have wanted 48 so they have more time to get a good look at players and share minutes around.

They intentionally want to keep summer league as a B-grade product, so they give it a B-grade game length
