Premier League Off Season 2019

What's happening in the Premier League off season? Have any clubs made announcements? Any rumoured player movements?

Heard Dean went down to the bank to see how many funds were in store for next season. He was shocked to hear they spent their entire 8 year budget to buy the last 3 titles!!!

I think there are a lot of people now giggling with the thought in their head "told you so!" Several clubs already in trouble after financial mismanagement relating to player salaries (predominantly imports). But no BAdel knew better.

Exactly, west seem like a tight core group. Southern seem to have great sponsorship and unless Alex is really pissed off, who cares about rest at North, they'd be bottom 3 without him.
Does anyone know when the Summer reserves season starts, heard they're going back to 13 game season. Would imagine most squads would start training soon so the coaches should get announced soon.

Southern to fall off & miss finals? North as stated above will be fine as long as they have Alex, his teams have never missed finals. West would want to retain Kubank and Thomas to stay competitive or get Spear back.

Think South and Sturt will be the big improvers.

How are some clubs going to cope with the proposed new by laws including salary caps and minimum playing times for restricted players? Will be interesting if the "poorer" clubs vote for these changes to rein in the Norwood's, Forestvilles and Tigers of this world

South men's reserves have started and trainings already look good. Noticed a few peeps from other clubs out there.
Women started a few weeks ago and they have picked up a couple of players as well. South women are starting from a long way back but look like they will be competitive this season.
Obviously two new coaches for the programs as noted previously.

And what is the issue with Hatchard moving clubs ? Most senior players have or will at some point change clubs for whatever reason that is relevant to them. Its life. If you watch anything other than local basketball then negative comments about player movement is hypocrisy because you are watching players who have all made moves that fit or give opportunity or was the only opportunity at that time. Stop making judgements for the sake of it and get a life or at least think beyond what is in front of your nose and expand your ideas and understanding of moves in isolation or as part of a bigger picture. Be smart and think a little. Should I write a list of all players movements in the local comp and your movements perhaps too ?

Someone has struck a raw nerve there!! I guess you have loyal people to your club and team or you blame your teamS and clubS and keep moving. You can list all the clubs I have been with and you only need one line!!!

Reply #706727 | Report this post

Wow you are really excited you think you got me and believe loyalty is that important that it controls your life and actions and lays judgement on others. Clearly moves by others has had a negative affect on you my friend as you are in here and they are not. Sad for you living in your bubble of your own reality. And no I am old and played for one club and retired but have many friends in many clubs and all make decisions that are relevant to them and the environment they are in. Not everyone is in the same situation and that is how life rolls. It is you that has been hit with a raw nerve targeting one player about their move. Maybe it is the likes of you that are behind their decisions to move. Good luck to them, not everyone has been as lucky as you so it seems person who emphasises with a capital S.

News from Woodville womens first training last night, the new coach was unveiled to them and used his initial speech to inform the ladies that they would be coaching themselves until January.

"If you need me, I'll be on the golf course", were his words.

Interesting take considering the state of the Womens program recently. I'd have thought it would be a perfect opportunity to take charge now and really try to get those ladies working to his game styles etc.

Until they get a coach that wants to take Womens basketball serious, unfortunately I fear for that side of the club.

The whole State thing is such an elitist club. Been stale for too long and needs new ideas and fresh blood in there. Instructions on how to run teams is sent from top and trickles down, is flow still the in thing???
High performance manager should have a 5 year contract and then should be replaced, then they can go off and not have a conflict of interest at private schools. Problem with a lot of clubs is that committees have no idea about basketball, see on a resume something about being involved in a state program and think they have to be amazing coach. Shudder to think how one of the new PL coaches will go, can't coach his way out of a wet paper bag but gets hired. Too many sycophants at state all worried about brown nosing than actually bringing in new perspectives.

At Norwood Lycett would be highest, Standbridge got $10k, McGriff was on $5-8, other import was nothing (didn't play much either), Webber boys are on good wicket and Drew is VP so wouldn't be paid much. Drmic was going to go to the Flames originally but Southern chucked $30k at him and Norwood couldn't even come close. And no one else would be getting paid. So how can that even come close to Southern. Forestville would be the next highest, then its daylight to Norwood and West.

ah no, they missed the finals in 2017 and only scraped into 5th this year due to cameos by DJ and Deng. They were lucky to make it in 2018. Maybe 5 years ago that poorly constructed sentence would have meant something.

Where's all the money come from at the South Adelaide Poachers? Do they have it or are they just throwing numbers at other clubs guys hoping they can land a couple?
can anyone confirm who they are actually trying to poach. Am aware Jonnek from North chased the green. Any other confirmed offers or signings? Who else is on their hit list. Someone at Poacher land must've won the lottery. Bet Al wished he had access to this much alleged cash for his program.

Do you South Australians realise that travel in involved in every other senior semi-pro state league in the country, and that your Meteo senior league is the exception here? Amazes me that travelling a few hours away once a season could possibly be such a massive deal. The resistance to progress is one of the reasons your state league is so far behind all the others and why the game isn't growing in SA.

Anon #423 so convinced you're right you had to post the same thing twice?

SA is different to other states. Population base is different. Obviously that has an impact. All State Leagues across all sports in SA are Metro based because about 75% of South Australian's are Metro based. This is different to every other state in Australia. This is why SA is different.

Talent Pool in turn is different. Even MtG recruit Metro players to build a viable team. Are you suggesting SA should become all of state based just for the visuals but force city based players to relocate or commute to play for a Country based team?

SA has twice tried Country based teams in the State League. Both times they collapsed due to non-competitiveness and cost.

The game is growing in SA. Stats prove it is growing. Your claim otherwise is false.

The top 5 Premier league teams from 2017/18 would more than compete with some SEABL teams and would be very strong in QBL and WBL.

Hahahhhahaa you are kidding yourselves if you think premier league teams could hang with SEABL teams. Tigers would be able and maybe west/Norwood but you have a very delusion perception of premier league compared to others. The players in SEABL and QBL are deeper and better. Sam Johns went to Logan and didn't do much, yet dominates here

I am proud of our league, but I would have to agree that our teams cannot be compared to SEABL/QBL. I think the depth of teams in those leagues are greater as their benches are far stronger and Imports are quality. Maybe our top teams could compete with the lower end teams in those leagues, but wouldn't stand a chance against the top-mid range sides

Main difference between PL and SEABL teams is the depth of the SEABL benches. Starting units compare very favourably, it's only when you go to the bench that SEABL teams have the edge.

Seriously folks. Success is equal to % of population playing basketball and that means melbourne/victoria are always going to be stronger 4-10 fold so stop bragging Eastern states and all the rest celebrate success that is statistically harder to achieve so worth celebrating when it comes. There is also an economic factor as well and that again leaves SA/NT & Tassie behibd the 8 ball. Perspective people. It's just basketball.

Jamie won a couple of games at Nationals goiyby the website. I know that's not great but he probably really didn't have any competition for the South job. $$ give you talent in PL but putting that talent together and coming up with an effective formula that works is another. Club culture is something else entirely and will take more than a decent PL program.

Time will tell in this case and there are a few clubs with experienced coaches that starts below Jamie before he has drawn up his first play!!

And there lies a problem for Metro. They are soaking up talented Country players who have a mountain of opportunity comparatively per head of player to metro players. And now those players are now taking positions for metro players to develop within teams and stronger competition. This showed at Nationals with Country placing higher than Metro and winning in matchups in the junior mens. In the long run this will have its down side for metro. There needs to be limits and equity. An example is the no of teams in development teams for that tiny country population is double that of an exponentially larger population in the metro region. At this age group that is locking in the same players with no fluidity to the program. The net loss will be to other sports or leaving basketball all together. This has to be contributing to lower numbers in many clubs in senior and youth league competition. In turn the strength of SA is weakened. Then of course there is the politics and a varying defintition of what makes a good player vs what mkes a good team. The latter being ignored to develop selected few at the expense of the State. And that is where our reputation is laid. End of rant.

Early pre season predictions for the men...

Southern
Daylight....
Norwood
West
Forrestville
South
North
Sturt
Woodville
Centrals
Eastern

Should be an easy win with the suspected trio of Johns/Drimic/Turnage. will be to good with the exemption of a doctors certificate.
If not for the West Adelaide upset of 2017 would you agree this southern dynasty would be the best run our state league has seen? Credit to coach Nyberg building this one from the ground up.

Rumour has it East are targeting 2017 Halls Medalist Eian Davis but then again we all thought they were targeting Brooks, Typical bush league type stuff. With Cornerstone Seb Vozzo looking around east might be in for a tough year once again.

Norwood have opened their pockets and their hearts and poached Brandon Brine for the up coming season apparently for around $1000 per game. will be hoping to have a good season to get back to that Southern pay cheque rumoured to be upwards of $1500 per game.

North once again haven't learnt their lesson that paying Starling's mates to keep him happy after CJ Reeds 4/26 finals performance. But here we are they have brought in James peters and from reports is the second highest earner at north. Only reason to be out at Hilcrest it seems this year is to potentially catch Hawkes taking out his frustrations on the opposing teams import with his signature right hook.

What ever happened to Daniel Simms?

Dumbass, I think you'll find money is always the reason. Drmic had committed to kb at Norwood but when Southern offered him $30k they couldn't match. You think Brine is thinking about anything else but money you're kidding yourself. And eagles have always paid huge, you think DJ would have stepped on court for seconds for free???? As well as Teys??? Even Peters who was an OK reserves player to even get petrol money to move is absurd. Don't even get me started on Standbridge from last year and his $10k.
Produce season after season, what had Southern done in last decade until the chequebook came out. Forestville miss playoffs, suddenly a bunch of sixers want to play there.

Norwood gave themselves real shot by astute recruiting to fill a need. Johnson will play where chance to be legit is real.

Some of these players need to recognise they are not professional basketballers. If you aren't signed to an NBL 10 then you do not play professionally in Australia.
If you are an Aussie in Premier League, get a job and support yourself and stop attempting to extort these amateur clubs for all they have. Once again you ARE NOT professionals because YOU haven't made it. Simple.
I personally rate, very highly, loyalty and commitment to your club. Wouldn't want ANY of these over rated, non-professionals who are nothing short of hired mercenaries anywhere near my club.
As for the constant bagging of coaches on here by the "experts", I doubt you can actually comprehend the time and effort spent coaching Premier League for very little financial compensation. These guys do it because they love it and most are pretty good coaches overall.
So dust the Doritos chips from your manboobs, get off your ass and away from your keyboard for a bit, have a shower and get a life. No-one cares what you think. Some opinions aren't worth sharing.

That being said, there are a few guys in PL who are possibly fringe NBL guys/DP level players that could be making some coin too. There are a lot of young kids at college and coming through that would be major impact players at Premier League level.

The Jimma kid from Centrals being one, Harris from Forestville being another both play under good coaches that will develop and teach them, know the game, and will be far better than Johns.

The problem is with the standard of coaching and ability to develop them for higher levels will see the bulk of them head interstate for state league level comp.

Not sure Norths budget would be any less than those teams. Starling has to be on more than he was on in 2016 with Tigers. Atem wasn't cheap. CJ returning visa. I think Norths budget is amongst the highest.

Reply #719989 | Report this post

Anonymous
Years ago

Nah you are wrong about North. Returning visas aren't what they were 3 years ago. A club can sponsor the returning player and it costs very little. There was a change in the visa rules in 2017 and North were on it early in 2017 with Alex and Aric Miller.
3 people got paid at North, Alex, Atem and CJ, as that is the budget they are given, and it is equal to the women's budget.
Norths budget has been nothing like Southern, Forestville and Norwood. That's the truth.

Reply #719990 | Report this post

Anonymous
Years ago

The truth is you're deliberately omitting part of Starling's salary. I get why: he's a JDO in addition to being a PL player, and should be paid for both roles. But don't try that BS about your PL budgets being less than the aforementioned clubs.

Reply #719993 | Report this post

Anonymous
Years ago

Not bullshit. The PremierLeague playing budget is tiny compared to those clubs.
North just hired Alex in a job role, which as you stated is completely seperate, to lock him into the club.

Reply #719995 | Report this post

Anonymous
Years ago

I didn't state it was completely separate, because it's not. Nobody's believing Alex would play for just the amount he's 'technically' being paid for PL if his wage wasn't being supplemented by the JDO role. Therefore they aren't separate, and your comments on the Men's PL budget is a matter of semantics.

Again, this is fine: it makes sense for both parties. You're still BS'sing by omitting these facts though. If you're okay with that then cool, but you're not fooling anyone.

Vozzo is a decent enough kid but has an extremely high opinion of his ability! YL is like a social B grade comp at Hillcrest so scores at this level mean nothing especially when he had the ball in his hands 99% of the time and did not pass.

Mavericks let anyone and I mean anyone train or be part of their squad so if there are any social players looking for a game they will accommodate. Not a great culture and Vozzo bagged the hell out of the coach and club last season and has now returned with his tail between his legs.

So from what I am hearing here it seems that Mavs, Centrals, Woodville and Sturt not to improve too much. Southern still strong, Norwood stronger with some additions, Forestville no idea depends on what rabbits are left in the hat. West a completely different shape but still looking strong, South looking for improvement with additions to their squad and North likely to slip a bit with losses of a couple of starters. What do people think?

The bottom half of the ladder will be dictated by imports. None were really consistent last year and in sturts case they had none after Garth left. What was story with that, heard he was just a dickhead.
If north had lost starling, they would be in the bunch with them, so if a couple add some guns then it will be interesting.
Rumours already floated here say Legan and Brine to Norwood and Davis to Eastern, that confirmed officially?
Norwood will rely on the Webbers and Lycett again, losing Stanbridge will hurt in terms of a good role player. Normally they trott the old boys out in summer but only been cameos by Lycett and D Webber hence the record.

Their men's budget will probably reduce but will they spend to have a winning women's team, a competitive one or just one that makes the numbers up. Doubt they'll attract players to relocate there, my guess they might try and attract some locals here and pay their travel costs. But bit of a joke if their team doesn't even live in mt Gambier. And if it's just for a year why bother building up a team.

The Rockets are getting desperate by signing an NBL DP to bolster their backcourt, that sentance doesn't even make sense.

What those teams fundraise and bring in with sponsors to supplement their program is up to them. Don't know if this is how other clubs work but I can confirm that the men's team does not receive an extra dollar from the club compared to the girls. The rest is brought in by hard work fundraising and canvassing for sponsors. What they raise here is theirs and theirs alone. Hope this helps you to understand.

Whoa cowboy, team to beat. Have Alex and then who? BJ is a good signing but young, can he handle pressure. McVeigh is still a rumour, good scorer but again how will he fit in. Then there's the other import spot, what will they go for?
Mt Gambier has experience and will bring in better players and imports. Norwood and West have pretty settled local veterans, Forestville if they keep Teys will be up there. Then it's a huge gap.

Mount gambier have one player signed tom Daly , all of the others jumped ship weeks and months ago , yes richard hill has experience but the team is rebuilding from scratch

They will be hopeful to resign Eric burden once back from holidays .

They need a completely new team,

We are now close to mid January and most of not all quality players are signed , I hope they use this experience you talk about to piece together a competitive group

West not too different to Southern are they? Yep every teams has add ons but Tigers have a core of juniors and long term seniors just like west.

Johns, Staude, Ellison, Ficken, Davies, Catford, Barton, Williams have all played a role at different times over the past few years. Plus Smyth, Turner, Peacock who has played for Tigers previously and come back over this period.

I don't think Southern have more of their juniors playing than other clubs but I don’t think they’re any worse than other clubs either.

i dont get the whole its better if home grown why? juniors players might choose to play at a different club for multiple reasons and if they are restricted or criticized or the senior club is that is unfair. The player might move for more opportunity ie at their junior club there is gun player in their role only a year older and will never be playing above said player and move for more opportunity. they may move to the other side of town for work/study/relationship or whatever making staying with junior club impracticable. they want to play at same club as best mate or partner. it would rarely be for player payments. i dont get why this whole notion of it is better if win and its with your juniors. surely a successful junior program is not based on whether your juniors play successfully for your senior teams.

Correct.

PL is crap we need better players better teams

PL Clubs are bad recruiting players in to make their teams better

If a club's juniors wanted to stay at the club and play and were good enough they would stay and play.

To make the League better clubs need to recruit better players than just their own local junior players and together teams will play at a higher level which is what we really all should be asking of the clubs and the league.

Get a couple of bench nbl players and high quality imports and look out. They're looking to make sure they get in Victorian comp next year so will be putting team together. Don't sleep on those 3 players already there, would start for any team here!

Sorry if I am naive but what do you mean by "a coach that puts in tens of thousands work harder"? Those other issues you raise of not as many juniors, we'll work damn hard at developing those you have into the best juniors you will then have juniors from other areas wanting to come and play at your club. All areas of Adelaide have businesses get creative in attracting them might be able to attract sponsors from outside of your areas your club plays across the state etc etc

So how were Southern traveling until the chequebook came out? Not very well I believe, Deano isn't that great a coach, can get outcoached game night regularly, Grand Final against west was proof. Had no answer to Oldham coming off ball screen, look at video, totally confused by it and had no answer.
Seems the above poster holds all the answers to creating a successful club. Could you please provide email and I'm sure Eastern, centrals and warriors will put you on their board to lead them out of hole, seems so simple the way you describe it. Had me confused about playing all over state though.

Southern had the best u21 player in 2012, 14 and 15. Perhaps those guys just matured plus imports like every other club and some smart coaching was enough to get them a couple of titles.

Arms race is good for the comp, about time it elevated itself. Clubs aren't stupid, they are spending what they are bringing in, no-one is going broke.
Sturt can take the "high ground" if that's how they see it, and enjoy bottom spot most likely.

If you are someone that did not quite make it or someone that is NBL wanting to get some shots up in the offseason go to a club spending money in the arms race.

If you care about basketball and want what is good for the sport support the clubs like Centrals and Sturt who actually develop players.

All clubs develop, some better than others. This is the highest level of hoops in our state and a blend of both is what is needed to succeed.

Ha, so true, Sturty Sixers. Also most development is done in juniors right. Then PL coaches will receive the cream of the crop to develop them further for PL. I am pretty sure the best juniors getting to go up against NBL, imports etc every week at training develops them far quicker for PL than competing with the exact some group of kids they have been going against since juniors.

A lot go to college nowadays but the rest of your statement is very debatable. Only a select few make NBL or Europe and did you really say NBA?
Southern, West and North all have developed juniors playing in their PL team if not at college. Not great examples really, could go through the lists but feel like it would fall on deaf ears.
