Cairns v Brisbane Feb 9

If there is one crunch game this round, then this is it. Alex Loughton's last home game and I think all NBL fans want him to go out with a bang.

He has been a trooper for Cairns and worthy of having his jersey hung so I hope all the Cairns faithful come out.

Cairns are up 2:1 in this series and they don't care for their big city cousins, who were lucky to fall over the line against the Hawks earlier in the round. Brisbane are more motivated than Donald Trump at a wall convention as this is reflected in the bookies odds.

But odds mean nothing when you throw emotions into the play and this will be an emotion game. Will Brisbane let Loughton go out on a high, or will the selfishly win the game? Surely they have to let the old fella have a double double game. I curse any Brisbane player who blocks his shot or fouls him today, or denies him 10 points.

Cairns have had a season from hell, but today, this is their Grand Final. That might be enough to carry them over the line, but Brisbane are party poopers.

I don't know whats worse, the fact brisbanes field goal % is so low, or the fact that brisbane are shooting so badly and cairns are going into quarter time with only a 7 points lead (thanks to a 3 on the buzzer).

Both teams putting on an offensive masterclass....

If there was ever any clearer indication of why Kenny was never ever going to be D Martins' shoelace, it was the last 6 seconds of theat half.

Martin, on a very very bad day, may have lost the ball on a stupid baseline drive, but Damo would never, ever have wasted time complaining to the ref whole allowing his player to get off a 3 pointer on the buzzer....

Can I ask what the rationale for retiring Loughton's jersey is?

He doesn't have a long tenure.
He hasn't won any awards like an MVP.
He hasn't won a playoff series let alone a championship.

His greatest accomplishment is convincing Beecroft to pay him an extra year.

It's easy to blame the coach, but he doesn’t put the ball in the hole. As good as Patterson was a month back, he stopped sharing the ball, Glidon went into his shell as soon as the pressure was applied and Cadee who was reasonable mid season went back to what we all new, spud. TeRangi has improved a lot but still young and couldn’t find the three when most required. Bairstow misses to many open ly ups and is slow. Davis was average to be nice, Kendall had a go, Hodgson, Vukona were good and give you what you expect. Gibson still got bit to offer.

Cairns should not get blinded by seasons finish, they still should clean out five or six players and chase some Aussie youth that is coming out college. Maybe try find a few younger bench players looking for opportunities at some other clubs, though might be tough with new side coming in.

Reply #733353 | Report this post

Manu Fieldel

If the app is right in point totals (which it surely cannot be wrong because it's simple accumulation of game scores) then the breakdowns are as follows:

Brisbane
For 2419
Against 2402
= 1.0070774355 percentage

Adelaide
For 2515
Against 2499
= 1.006402561 percentage

So for Brisbane to equal Adelaide in win-loss, Brisbane has to win their game against NZ (which means percentage goes up), and Adelaide has to lose twice (which means their percentage goes down after each loss). So you see how it's impossible considering Buzzas already have a higher percentage than the Snitches. Shit this would be glorious if the lads were to make it. Man oh man oh man

Essentially:

For Brisbane to make it:

- Brisbane must win their last game (vs NZ)

- Adelaide must lose their last two games. (Vs UTD and @ Per)

If Adelaide wins either, or if Brisbane loses then Brisbane is done.

But Adelaide has two tough games, so Brisbane isn't done by any stretch.

Still, if Adelaide beats United tomorrow then we'll have our top 4, and next week will just decide the order.

Lots of incentive for Perth and Melbourne to beat Adelaide, too. Not only to try secure #1 seed, but also because nobody in the league would prefer to play a series against Adelaide than Brisbane.

He's been there since 2010/11, that would be one of the longest tenures in club history, wouldn't it? I believe he is also the only player to start in both of their grand finals. Sounds like a no-brainer IMO.

United would rather play Adelaide, based on results this season.

But United has a more important incentive for beating Adelaide- securing home court advantage in the playoffs.

Lovebroker, Loughzy should get his jersey retired. Nine years of service means a lot to a small market club, he's been huge off the court and he's overseen the best seasons in Snakes history. Looks like you want to discredit the 20 years of work the club has done just because they haven't won a championship. You respect and honour your people regardless

Paul, Grabau has the highest caps on lock forever with 400 and something, Anthony Stewart second on 223, Loughzy 220 (if NBL stats site is correct) with two games to play

You seem to have two very different opinions LoveBroker? Below is what you said recently:

Congratulations to Alex for a long and successful career.

I thought last year being so effective that he'd have another 2 years left but not to be.

A gentleman of the game, I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Please replace Worth and Trigger in the 2019/20 Taipans commentary team.

The Taipans have been a community club for 10 years - Loughton has been involved in 9 of those which has included 2 GF appearances and a semi-final appearance. He has played the 2nd highest amount of games for the club and, as Manu has pointed out, his influence off the court has been great.

You say he hasn't won a playoff series - how did the Taipans make 2 GF's then?

Trust Brisbane to ruin LK's perfect script.
I'm sure they wanted Brissy in the finals, but that's probably not going to happen now.

It does pose an interesting dilemma for them though...
Clearly they're orchestrating a 1-2 finish for Melbourne and Sydney.

The Refs did their best in the final quarter last night, but it wasn't enough. That means they need Adelaide to beat Perth. Always doable with the right refs, but that would mean that Brisbane miss out.
