Premier League Round 16

Splitting the rankings now the top 5 is set

Finals teams
1. Mount Gambier 12-3 - Rolling now and with everyone healthy look to be firming as title favourites.
2. North Adelaide 12-4 - Made two big statements recently taking care of Forestville and Norwood by big margins.
3. Forestville 12-3 - No Majok on the weekend, will he return? Might determine how far they end up going.
4. Southern 10-3 - Going along quietly but have't had a tough challenge without Drmic yet.
5. Norwood 11-4 - Have teams worked them out? Would be disappointed with a big loss to North.

Non finals teams
1. West 5-10 - The best of a bad bunch but still not threatening any of the finals teams.
2. Woodville 5-9 - Maybe the team most likely to cause a finals team upset.
3. Centrals 7-8 - All falling apart after a promising start to the season. Shame as they were the only team shaping to push for a finals spot. A 50+ point loss is embarrassing.
4. Eastern 2-12 - Morris isn't enough, though he puts up consistent numbers, someone has to defend there.
5. Sturt 1-14 - Despite adding big name stars, can't get it together to get a win, even against mediocre teams. Something wrong here.
6. South 3-10 - The weekend proved they are a long way from even the likes of Woodville. Have gone significantly backwards this season.

Eastern vs Sturt
Both teams will see this as winnable and be hungry to finish the season well. Sturt should get the win here with their recent additions but I've thought that in a few other games too. Can't see any of the Sabres being able to handle Morris down low.

Mavs by 6.

Norwood vs Centrals
A month or so ago this might have been an interesting matchup but with Centrals recent form this one looks like being a training drill for the Flames to get back on track.

Norwood by 25.

Woodville vs Southern
A 30 point game last time they met, but wouldn't count on that being the case again. Warriors have a history of bringing it when there's nothing on the line for them. Southern have been shaky, but getting it done.

Southern by 11.

Forestville vs South
Well this could get ugly. If there's one team that can pile on points, it's the Eagles and if there's one team that can concede them it's the Panther "army". After giving up 117 to the Warriors, you'd have to expect a big score here for Forestville. Majok or no Majok, this will be ugly.

Forestville by 28.

West vs Mount Gambier
Pioneers took care of the Bearcats only recently and can't imagine this one ending any differently. Burdon finding his range is a concern for the league.

Mount Gambier by 17.

Southern vs Forestville
This one could ride on whether Majok plays. A great challenge to see if the Tigers are contenders or pretenders. I'm not convinced just yet. Mays could be the difference in this one with his size and athletic ability.

Forestville by 8.

Mount Gambier vs South
I wonder if a team have given up 300 in a single weekend before? I think South might just nudge it this week!

Mount Gambier by 32.

Huge slate of games this week. Game of the week is Forestville vs Southern with some big implications for finals. Huge games coming up over the last month to determine finals positions.

West are a young squad. Yes they had Blake and Spud, but apart from Thomas, the rest are still quite young. If they can keep this squad together (Kubank, Rennie, Fouser etc) look for better performances next year.
Pioneers for me are the standout team, with Rockets coming in a close second. I can't see anyone else matching these two teams if either perform at their best.
Dark horse is Norwood, you just don't know what your going to get!
Eagles without Majok are done, like Southern without Drmic.

Pioneers putting up some BIG numbers lately. If you can slow them down they're beatable and a gf at Titanium will be tougher for them than the rarified air of the Mount. Richard Hill has done a great job with this group who aren't very deep and with very little prep time. Also were not allowed to recruit anybody from any other PL club.

What's it to be with West. Last couple of years they've been credited as having one of the best local player lineups, suddenly they've become young after a terrible year. Logically it seems they need a great import guard to be successful, Oldham terrific and Legan was 1st team last year. Corey decided to hand the keys over to a local backcourt, and whilst Thomas has been very good, Rennie hasn't been up to it resulting in Spud playing more minutes than he should. Departure of their import hasn't helped but writing was already on the wall before he left. Expect an American guard to be on wishlist for next year.

Centrals had a promising start to the year with a soft schedule. Defensively they've been horrible which is surprising since Simpson is supposed to be a defensive coach, losing their import who was their only experienced inside player definitely hasn't helped. Dau has had a few good games but hasn't snuck up on anyone like he did early last year, rest of young guys inconsistent as would be expected. Centenera a shadow of former self coming back from injury, would probably give young kids a go to get some experience and drop his minutes way down, can't do any worse than what he's producing. All other teams have to do is gang up on Riewer and others have failed to take any benefit of being open.

Really needed an alpha dog for West. Thomas that overall unselfish player and whilst Jefferson been good they seem to lack that confident guy that will take the big shots when they need it. Corey seems to have interesting relationship with imports, Harold was one game away from being sacked the other year, didn't things sour with Legan, apparently some off court issues. Maybe needs to do some more homework before bringing them in, definitely not the only coach that needs to do that. Whitmore probably worst judge of talent and while Petty got it right with one, Zinser very underwhelming especially looking at college career. At least they stayed unlike Centrals, very unprofessional by Jones.
With 2 imports now it's even more important to get them right.

Been a tough year for West no doubt. I don't get why people are comparing them to previous years gone by West teams. Those old teams were always stacked with vets. Take out unproductive spud and Truslove and you have a team of 20 year olds. they lost an import that they were relying on to be good. I’d say Corey factored in that JUST being enough to win games, and when they lost the big import they’ve struggled to find scoring and paint control.

A lot has been said about Mavericks on this forum and majority is 100% negative. Is this justified criticism or just troll or ex player gripes?? Forum users can make up their own mind and then ask themselves what action your club would take to rectify a ship that is not sinking, it's been at the bottom of the basketball ocean for a long time. The current PL coach who was also the junior development manager for years prior is the one that cops the majority of the criticism levelled at the club and the "non-competitiveness" of his teams with alleged culture issues surrounding the Mount Barker club like a New York fog. Is there any future? Going by the current standings below I would say NO.

Current junior seasons with the next 4-5 years of talent through to the senior program
16-1 equal last without a win
16-2 last without a win
18-1 second to last with 1 win
18-2 8th with 2 wins
U/23 equal 9th with 3 wins
Reserves last with 2 wins
The PL Coach has been in charge since 2016 and the final standings unfortunately tell a sad tale.

Premier League
Current season 10th with 2 wins
2018 last
2017 second to last
2016 last

Is this a fixable situation and if so how?? What do the club need to raise its teams of the ocean floor and be competitive at least somehow?
I would love to know what others think without a sledging session and how this can be fixed, and how long it may take. I would hate to see Mavs dissolved as a club but if it was under a pro/reg rule for PL then they would be in serious trouble.

#921. "Dowdell shopped himself around", um no. Was let go by West and had no where until North threw him a lifeline after letting Mays go. Am pretty sure everything you said is incorrect. Stop making shit up!
Corey's history with imports appears to present a pattern as recently discussed. People skills seem to be lacking a lot. Both Legan and Dowdell appear happier at Norwood and North.
Dowdell fits at North as he is the work horse who compliments Starling, McVeigh and Norths system.

Brunson you forgot to mention that Mavs are:
Bottom in 18-1 with no wins
No 18-2 team
No Youth league team
8th in Reserves

Also going by your way of thinking North Adelaide & Woodville should be applying for NBL licences with their moves from Hillcrest and St Clair to current stadiums.

Females are even harder to keep interested in senior sport than men and thats any sport not just basketball.

Centrals just don't have an inside presence anymore with Jones taking a higher paid job in South America. They will still score points these next 5 games and have a chance to win, just have to find a way to get rebounds and some stops. Tough matchups for them with Dau playing the 4 and Dinng playing the 5 when really they are wings.

With having a threat like Riewer at PG and some of the wings they do have, they will put up some points. Will be interesting to see where some of these guys end up next season.

And not sure if that Mavs junior mentioned is same as the one that's returned to Mavs, now a 18. And interesting that a state player only spent summer at North and now at Eagles, played a reserves game or 2 in preseason so wonder what happened there. Problem with coach or they just too deep?
But Adam Todd has done a fantastic job building that 16s program, really brought in fantastic standards. Great call to drop a talented kid to 2s a couple of years ago for being a diva when most wouldn't have guts too. Wouldn't wonder why a lot would want to go there. And no, I'm not Adams mum, involved with North or anything like that, just admire how he teaches these kids discipline and accountability.

Lions vs West next week will be a battle! Both teams desperately wanting a win.

Lions up 2 on Norwood after 1st qtr. Riewer picks up his 3rd cheap foul and doesn't play the entire 2nd qtr and wheels completely fell off as they just have no structure when he's not on the court. Next thing you know, they are down 20 at the half. That took him out of his game as you could see on the court in the 2nd half it looked like he was trying to get himself going but just pressing a bit too much.

Lions have the talent, they just lack discipline and structure. I'm amazed with the talent they have, it seems like they hardly run anything and just play 1 on 1 basketball too much. I still think they win 2 or 3 out of the next 4 games. Which is great considering where they have been at the past few years. Extremely young team.

I think the Pioneers will win the league as they are rolling right now and I just don't see anyone beating them the rest of the year but who knows? Anything can happen in 1 game. North could challenge but who knows with those guys and the Eagles with a full roster could give them a game, but I just don't see it.

Compared to last year Dickel has done fantastic, and I quite dislike him personally btw. At least they score over 20 a game. Looking at Centrals, the women there have slid, mainly because their 2nd import didn't return, was going to be late anyway but stuck around in Europe. Considering the money they threw at KB and Boone, between the 2 they would have the budget of most women's teams. New president was supposed to change things but was really a puppet for his wife to get those 2. Members should ask at AGM the player payments, KBs were mostly under the table.
North and Norwood also very disappointing despite losing players, Eastern a contender behind the play of their import, haven't looked at every box score but she would be a hall's favourite.
As for Petty, is anyone really surprised apart from him jagging a couple of wins. Apart from Hoppo who's gone, is their any juniors coming through or he developed anyone? Jonnek has gone way backward, result of going to shit team, not a bright spark amongst them. Would be asking more of the junior development more than anything.

PL Coach appointments and non-appointments 2020

Men's

Safe
Forestville, Mount Gambier, North, Southern, Norwood.
50/50
West & Centrals (only if Ricky & Corey decide they don't want it)
Vacancies
Sturt, South, Eastern & Woodville. (The only one that may be safe is Jamie who is in season number 1). Whitmore 3 seasons, Warhurst 4 seasons and Casella 2 seasons all have done very little.
COY - Close race, but if you decided this on talent available then it would be Rogers or Nyberg. Probably will go South with the title to Richard Hill and the Mount.

Women’s

Safe
Sturt, Forestville, Eastern, Mount Gambier & West
50/50
Southern, Woodville (weird appointment), North & Norwood with first year coaches will most likely get another gig.
Vacancies
Centrals (KB disappointing), South (lots of hype and promise but no results. Dickel should spend 100% on developing the club as this is a priority)
COY – Monica but don’t rule out Billington or Boti as dark horses.

Dickel, as an ex Lightning coach is a good coach, but needs to stop handing out participation awards and protecting players and/or maybe pleasing some parents. He has got a talented group of players, (who can not only bring the Club out of mediocrity, but entice and and encourage younger players), but who should be in the top half of the ladder, but are inconsistent. Rotations are costing the team, the girls cannot constantly keep playing catch up. Start walking the talk. Good to develop, play your best. This Club has great heart, but needs success and credibility at PL Level. This team is a good start.

You know what I really like Boti & Ossy for what they have done for the game other than coaching. Boti's media and just plain knowledge is unpassable in this state. Mike Osborne is a legend at NCT, 36ers and the Weststars plus Proball was an institution for the sport.
Lots of "johnny come latelys" in this competition in both mens and womens that have zero understanding of the past and what these individuals have actually done over a long long time. Sit and take some time to appreciate those that still give back to our sport.

Sort of agree with the above. Micks proven himself as a legendary coach, demanding accountability and standards from his players. Was a big surprise to see him come back and take over Woodvilles women. Indeed there were a lot of who's this old guy, won't have a clue about any new trends or fancy drills but I'd take him every time over Petty etc.
As for Boti, yeah, good on him for being a journalist and his contributions there. But it's like having Craig Hutchinson taking over the Carlton coaching job. Can write and do some dad jokes but can't coach.

Just to back up the above, I know of Mick's history in the game but are too young to have seen him coach previously. Also never said a word to him in my life.

Saying that I think he's done a good job at Woodville. Sure he runs a lot of flex and it's not the space and pick and roll modern style that the game is trending towards but it's a system that still can create advantages and seeing some of his trainings at St Clair he seems to have a group that are competitive and playing together.

Won't comment on Boti.

In most cases under 16 boy Div 1 teams beat Premier League women pretty well in pre season practice games. 18 Boys beat the lightning easily.

Why don't we talk about Sturt looking for a new woman’s coach already

Both of Sturt's PL jobs are advertised. That's common to a lot of clubs, after a coaches contract is up the job is advertised. Doesn't mean the current coach won't apply and get it. I'm speaking generally, I don't know the specifics of the Sturt situation.

If you don't think she’d be a bench player on half the teams you’re an idiot. Who on Forestvilles apart from Rios is better for example. It’s okay fellas, keep being intimidated.

Whilst Tyson-Thomas wouldn't embarrass herself going against the men, no way does she beat an 18 year old plus man consistently. Would pick up a few points in a game to 11 but would be beaten 999 out of 1000 games. Might make it in a pinch in a wnbl team, but as mentioned 15 year old boys beat a wnbl team.
Grow up some people. It's not a slight on females. She may have some skills better than men, but strength and physically men will be better.

Overestimating the women's comp would be saying that there are two women who could play with the men. Not saying that one half-jokingly could.
