If you took Wolves out of it in recent times then the correlation is high. In saying that I would correlate it more to a GF appearance, the margins are very thin and the reward for top spot in theory should be an easier ride to the last game.

According to the website, Hawks and Redbacks both finished fourth, with the top team taking the title each of the prior two years. Then again it has the 2014 championship-winning Eagles coming from....ninth.

And i'm great at building cars. I have 6 cars that i'm building that sit in the garage not moving coz I cant get them to work. I also bought two imported cars and run them into the ground instead.....but yeah some say I am great at building cars lol

Utley played his two imports for 40 minutes against Warwick and played Easley for 36 minutes. If he is a great coach why is he not developing perth players, and coaching them so he can trust them enough with court time?

Utley is a great coach, one of the best in the comp, and has proven it time and time again despite the hate.

Does he get stud imports? Yes. Thats part of being a good coach, having networks, being a good recruiter and being good at recognising talent.

No local development? get the hell off it.

Cooper Lowe, Carl Aylett, Ryan Blanchett, Logan Viskovich, Louie Timms, Jono Diaz. These are all local products that Utley has allowed to flourish this year. Diaz and Ryan have been starting, Carl started early on, Cooper been playing some great minutes. Clarke criticised for rotating too much, Utley criticised for not rotating enough....the wins speak for themselves.

Who cares about developing...
Suns have been a basket case for far too long, it's great to see at least some success up in the hills.

The SBL should of intervened years ago into Clarke's coaching experiment.
Nothing sort of madness, it was Sunday rat-ball at its best!
Literally making the SBL look so unprofessional.

Should have been a royal commission!!

Reply #749849 | Report this post

JohnnybeGoode

So salary cap breaches and rorts, imports being promised penthouse apartments and arriving only to sleep on a mattress on a teammates floor, players being paid on the side because they "work" for basketball academies, players being promised extras on the side and not receiving them, SBL referees reffing their own club SBL games in a biased fashion and you want the SBL to conduct a Royal Commission into a coaches style of play!!!! What planet are you from? I think perhaps Planet Bitter and Twisted because you must have got rejected or embarrassed by Clarke somewhere in your past. Get over it and move on with your life you sad little person.

The race for 7th & 8th spot is down to 3 teams - Giants, Suns and Willo.

GIANTS - Currently 11-11

After 3 losses in a row, the equation is simple for the Giants; win both games against Willetton and Cockburn this weekend and that will see them all but seal a playoff spot.

With their remaining games against Cockburn (A), Eagles (H) and Slammers (H), the Giants should be a lock for finals basketball.

Predicted Finish: 14-12 and good enough for 7th

TIGERS - Currently 10-12

After a big road win in Kalgoorlie last weekend, the Tigers have kept their season alive.

Their remaining 4 games are Mandurah (A), Giants (H), Bunbury (H) & Perry Lakes (H). These are all very winnable games, but I think the Hawks will be too strong in the last game of the season.

Predicted Finish: 13-13 and enough to seal 8th spot

SUNS - Currently 11-11

4 wins on the trot by an average margin of 19.8ppg have put the Suns in a playoff position. However, they have a horrid run home with games against Cockburn (H), Rockingham (A), Lakeside (A) & Joondalup (A).

They should do enough to beat Cockburn, but it's a big ask to knock off the top 3 teams on their home courts.

While it's a brave effort, they will fall short of making the 2019 finals.

Predicted Finish: 12-14 and time to look ahead to 2020.

wolves wsbl are in trouble then without both steindel and kidner in their team. also rumblings internally everything not rosy in that team.
that's a pity about amy kidners knee .
is sam roscoe injured as well ? no minutes in there loss to suns on the weekend , also were has tayla Hepburn gone?
both garbin and Mansfield leaving their team at real crucial times of the season , both teams yet to secure a playoff position.
what kids are leaving for college soon ? rose-deegan,jones,- are they 2 that are leaving.
the teams that are most settled will compete for the title.

Mandurah
willeton
hawks
suns

Ha... You can tell its school holidays again can't you! Let's try and get a bit of civility back on this thread and look at the remaining games for the Top 9 - whom I believe are the only ones remaining in Finals contention with two weeks left of the regular season

1. Joondalup Wolves (18-6)
Remaining Games: vs Cougars (W); vs Suns(!?)
Led by as much as 5 tonight with two mins to go up in the Midwest before the Buccs pulled off the comeback win with a huge 3 with two seconds remaining on the clock, and the subsequent turnover following the timeout from the in-bounds pass all but costing the Wolfpack a guarantee of locking in top spot on the ladder. Only two games remaining and should have more than enough talent to cover Gav and the Cougars next week at HBF, before what looks like a very interesting game versus the resurgent Suns at HBF in the last week of the season.
Predicted 2nd @ 19-7 (Hold H2H over Lakeside +16)

2. Lakeside Lightning (17-5)
Remaining Games: vs Suns (W) @ Perry Lakes (L) @ Rockingham (W) vs Buccs (L)
Arguably the toughest run home out of anyone in the top 8 with all four games against teams headed for the Finals. Even split of two @ home and two away which I see them splitting both, but could knock off the Buccs in their last game for the regular season to possibly take 1st if the Wolves go down to the Suns on the same night at HBF. Gero will want to secure that Top 4 position though and Home Court for the Quarter Finals, so I will go with a loss at home to the Buccs to wind out their season
Predicted 3rd @ 19-7 (Would lose H2H vs Wolves -16)

3. Geraldton Buccaneers (16-6)
Remaining Games: @ South West (W) @ Mandurah (W) @ Lakeside (W) @ Warwick (W)
Huge win for the Gero boys in front of the Midwest Maniacs tonight over the Wolves to hold onto that chance of a Top 2 finish. Back to Back double headers will be a tough finish to the regular season, but with what i expect to be a fairly easy double header against the Wooden Spoon-bound Slammers, followed by the Magic on Sunday in Waroona, it leaves their task of winning the final two games of the season back down here in Week 20 against the Lightning & Senators respectively, alot easier than it could have been. You have to wonder if this could be the swansong for local legends Moot and Ralphy, so will this be there final chance at holding aloft Bob in nearly two decades... Only time will tell!
Predicted 1st @ 20-6

4. Rockingham Flames (17-7)
Remaining Games: @ Warwick (W) vs Lightning (L)
Just the two games remaining for the injury hit Flames who have had to rely heavily on Hire in recent weeks after his 3x3 efforts overseas. White has turned out to be more dud than stud as the season has gone on and with Ritchart out with a leg injury, the boys from the Ham have done well just to get to where they have. The ultra talented Travers due back from a US trip in the next week or so will be welcome relief for Coach Petrik in his endeavours to win the Men their first SBL Championship
Predicted 4th @ 18-8 * Hold H2H over Hawks 2W-0L

5. Perry Lakes Hawks (17-7)
Remaining Games: vs Lightning (L) @ Willetton (W)
Somewhat of an inconsistent year for the defending Champions, but have started to find a bit of form as the season has gotten to the pointy end. Huge matchup against the God Squad at the Church next week, is followed up by a danger game against the Tigers in the final week of the season for Parso's feathered fliers. Do not hold the H2H over the Flames so if they want home court for the Quarters, would need to pull off the upset of Lakeside next week.
Predicted 5th @ 18-8 * Lose H2H against Flames 0W-2L

6. Warwick Senators (15-8)
Remaining Games: vs Flames (L) @ Mandurah (W) vs Buccs (W)
On their night, the boys from Warwick can challenge anyone in the League. But the consistency to do that on a regular basis has evaded them so far in 2019 and is the reason they currently sit where they do on the ladder. I think their second last game on the road to the Magic could give them alot of confidence with Mandurah having not much to play for rather than pride, and the Senators needing some momentum before they host Gero in the final game of the Regular Season on the Sunday of Week 20
Predicted 6th @ 17-9

7. Kalamunda Eastern Suns (13-11)
Remaining Games: @ Lakeside (L) @ Joondalup (W)
Its incredibly hard not to be impressed with the Suns late season form. Since their road loss to the Senators in Week 14, them boys from the Hills have won six on end and fear nobody at present which is just the mindset they will need ahead of their remaining two games of the regular season. Braun has to be the short priced League MVP Favourite, but it is how Coach Utley has this entire unit playing which makes them the Cinderella story heading into SBL Finals 2019. Interestingly if the Suns were to split their final two games and finish 7th, they would play their Week 20 opponent in the Wolves in the Quarter Finals.
Predicted 7th @ 14-12 ^ Hold H2H over Willetton but Lose H2H vs Giants

8. Willetton Tigers (12-12)
Remaining Games: vs Slammers (W) vs Hawks (L)
Massive win tonight ensured they stay above the Giants on the ladder but also secure the vitally important H2H matchup against the Kalgoorlie-based side as well for the season 2W-OL. Shouldn't have too much trouble against the visiting Slammers next season, but hard to see how they can stop a Hawks side still with a mathematical shot of finishing Top 4 in Week 20 if results go their (Perry Lakes) way. If results go as I predict, would have the unenviable task of facing the Buccs in the Quarter Finals
Predicted 8th @ 13-13 # Win H2H over Goldfields 2W-0L

9. Goldfields Giants (11-12)
Remaining Games: @ Cockburn (L) vs Eagles (W) vs Slammers (W)
Its fair to say the Giants season all comes down to whether or not they can knock off Cockburn at the Cougar Den tomorrow at Lunch. The fact that they lose the H2H battle with Willo means Creeky's boys must win their remaining three games for the season to ensure they play Finals Basketball in 2019, and set up a huge Quarter Final Series against arch rivals Geraldton. Unfortunately for the Golfields, the back end of double headers has not been kind to them this season and ending another teams finals aspirations could be all the motivation Coach Nener's Cougars need tomorrow. Survive and advance starts now for the boys from the states gold capital...
Predicted 9th (13-13) # Lose H2H against Tigers 0W-2L

The also rans...

Perth Redbacks (10th)
Departures, Rumors and the money well running dry will be the story of the Spiders Season. Big questions over whether or not Nik will still be at the Helm in 2020 but if he isn't, who takes over? Massive rebuild to begin under a new coach I am predicting

Cockburn Cougars (11th)
If Gav doesn't get injured and if Millam gets here a bit earlier, possibly could have been a finals contender but I doubt whether or not they make it past the first round. Alot of positives down at the Den - Nener has done exceptionally well with the limited resources he has but they will need to either recruit from intra & interstate to once again be a competitive force in the League.

East Perth Eagles (12th)
New Stadium and the return of Forde promised alot for the Eagles 2019 campaign but it all started to go downhill when the coach moved interstate to take up a position with the Kings in the NBL, leaving Coach Driscoll to see out the season. Maharaj, Williamson and Taiwhiti were all good leaders for a relatively young group, but they will need an injection of funds and a quality restricted player or two if they are to reverse their 2019 form.

Mandurah Magic (13th)
A young squad with two relatively young Imports was always going to make it a tough season for Trahair's troops. Not much in the way of junior talent coming through int he immediate future for the Magic means a couple more lean seasons yet unless they can coax some talent from the neighbouring Slammers and / or Flames programs looking for more opportunities.

South West Slammers (14th)
Tough first year back in the League for Coach Triscari with ageing Americans and a relatively inexperienced bench leading to the one win season. BWA taking over at an administrative level at least shows the need is there for the club, but alot has to be done in the way of developing alot of the south-west based athletes in the U16 & U18 state teams to progress on the development pathway into the SBL system down there, otherwise this kind of season will not be just a once off.

Give Slammers a NBL fringe payer whether they fund the whole thing or not I don't care, make them competitive.

Same with Cockburn make it compulsory to have 2 imports. Only team in the league that dont spend the $$$.
Fund or part fund that.

Eagles can do with fringe NBL also.

LOL, what is the point of imports? This isn't a league for the spectators.

Wouldn't it make more sense to only allow one restricted player? Wouldn't it be more even that way?

Allow clubs to keep money in the juniors rather than tax them for the benefit of guys coming in from overseas and leaving with the cash straight after the season?

Take a step back. Isn't that craziness?

Some clubs are getting it right, and have a great balance. Others evidently are not.

It seems short-sighted to suggest go and make a rule and diminish the product, to ultimately try and improve it for a small few.

Agree problems, and solutions required, but equalisation doesn't work - there's a cap in place that is the ultimate tool for this

Reply #751570 | Report this post

what clubs are 'getting it right' and have a balance?

Hawks, rocko, wolves, lakeside, tigers, gero and probs giants have all danced the salary cap to the dollar this year, some then also paying players more over and above to do 'club duties' .. and clubs that have chosen not to max out the cap like eagles, suns, cougars and redbacks (this year) get slandered for not being being up to scratch.

in recent history, slammers and magic have both spent the cap or more trying to keep up and gone bust in doing so.

... what is this 'balance' you are talking about?? it seems that you have the clubs wanting to max the cap vs those who don't.

'the product' is who spends the cap vs those who don't ... so what is this great balance you talk of???

Reply #751575 | Report this post

The SBL is a competition. Which means you compete - against one another.
Those clubs that can spend up to the cap - which is every club's right and advantage, if viable, put themselves in a better position.

Viability is early and proven. Stability over a long period, sponsors, junior pathways, good decision making, there’s quite a few clubs that have this. Others seem to really battle, having sold the farm in previous eras or due to amateurish decisions and actions.

Not sure about balance mentioned above but certainly there appears reward for competency, which is entirely appropriate.

Anon, you are onto it! What is the point of imports!! What is the actual purpose of the SBL? We have clubs, competing for the sake of competing- there is no prize money, so that's not the point; clubs recruit players and imports and sit locals on the bench, so development is not the point; clubs use money from juniors to pay for their players, so most financial security isn’t present.

The league needs to work out it’s purpose.

I suggest having no imports and it is a development league OR have one import each that doesn’t get paid!

the key statement is the league needs to work out its purpose!

problem is that this will involve parking club egos and working together for the benefit of all clubs and the league as a whole.

that involves leadership from the larger clubs that is simply not there. Some seem solely focused on becoming the next wildcats and lecturing everybody about how great they are and how everyone should be more like them. they are also the ones poaching other clubs best juniors and paying the $$$$ just to win win win.

oh well . back to 2 expensive imports that consume the bulk of the cap and paid for by domestic and wabl families, back to loyal juniors getting little real opportunity and everyone spending millions of junior basketball funds chasing a cup that really doesnt mean that much and is ultimately about who buys the best imports.

*sigh

A league needs to be of a standard that justifies it being a development league - it can't be so far off the pace of the NBL that its not respected or seen as a quality league. Otherwise the best talent (i.e. the ones we are trying to develop) will leave and play elsewhere (NBL1, NZNBL etc). We already see this but imagine if you took away the imports - which talented young players would want to play in such a crumby league?

Also, its OK for a state league to have multiple purposes - development is one. It also offers talented players the chance to play at the highest level (outside of the NBL) in their state. It also has a community / club element.

It is oversimplifying to say it needs to be one or the other, or that to be a development league you can't have imports.

Finally - re last comment about whoever wins having the best imports... this is far from true - see Perry Lakes last season, Cockburn 2016 and many other examples.

IMO the league might be a development league but it sure shouldn't frame itself as one. As soon as that happens then all who are involved; clubs, players, teams, sponsors, NBL, BA, will view it as that. The league should aim to be the best state league in the country. Emphasis on AIM. We all know it may not be achieved soon with NBL1. SBL D1 was renamed exactly for that reason, there were U18 games that were more entertaining and competitive that D-League. Sure, you get the odd (maybe 40%) tack yack still, but it’s a whole lot better than what it used to be with coaches stepping on court to make numbers.

When you get teams outright 'developing’ , you get Eagles Women, Magic Men, Slammers Men, Eastern Suns program (albeit moreso pre 2019). And don’t for a second say the Suns success in 2019 is because they developed all these years. Because that’s BS.

Women's Finals Outlook - Week 20 Games of note:

Cockburn (11th) @ Perth (9th)
- Perth MUST win to have any hope of snatching 8th position from the Suns, who would then need to lose to the Wolves on Saturday night to be relegated to 9th as Perth own the season H2H (+7) over the Suns
- Redbacks on a 3 game losing streak but did beat the Cougars by 20 down at the Den earlier in the season
** Perth to Win comfortably and keep their Finals hopes alive for rookie coach Craig Allen

Lakeside (1st) @ Rockingham (7th)
- Flames can not finish any lower than 7th but could finish 6th with a win if the Hawks go down to Willo on Saturday night, with Rocko holding that H2H over the Hawks
- The defending champs guaranteed to finish as Minor Premiers and secure home court advantage throughout the Finals at the Church yet again. Lakeside won the first matchup between these two teams comfortably by 20+ earlier in the season
** Lakeside defeat the Flames on the road, meaning the Flames can only finish 6th if the Tigers defeat the Hawks on Saturday

Warwick (2nd) @ Mandurah (4th)
- Arguably the most important game of the round with both teams entering this one with a 14-7 record and all to play for here
- Interestingly the last time the Senators beat a Finals bound team this season, was all the way back in Week 11 with a 25 point win over the Tigers at Warwick. The Senators also won the first game of this matchup by 13, but the Magic are now on an incredible 8 game winning streak stretching back to Week 13.
** At home and with that impressive win streak, i'll go with Mandurah to move to a 15-7 record and leapfrog the Senators in the process

Hawks (6th) @ Tigers (5th)
- Willetton currently +12 on the H2H after winning their Week 6 clash at Bendat. If Tigers win, they hold H2H over Wolves, but lose H2H to Senators & Magic
- If Hawks lose and Rockingham lose, Hawks would drop to 7th on H2H
** Tigers to win their final game on their old home court before the move across to the new Showcourt in 2020, defeating the Hawks by 6

Suns (8th) @ Wolves (3rd)
- Huge ask here for the Suns to keep their Finals hopes alive, knowing that they will know the result from the night before in the Perth game as to whether or not they need to win to keep their Finals aspirations alive
- Wolves with H2H over those around them, could secure home court advantage with a win here and results going their way. Wolves won their game in the Hills earlier in the season by 14
** Suns to lose and heartbreakingly get knocked out of the playoff race, going down by 15

R@nD0m's Final WSBL Ladder

1. Lakeside 17-5
2. Joondalup 15-7
3. Mandurah 15-7
4. Warwick 14-8
5. Willetton 14-8
6. Rockingham 13-9
7. Perry Lakes 13-9
8. Perth 10-12

R@nD0m's WSBL Quarter Finals

QF1 - Lakeside vs Perth (Lightning 2-0)
QF2 - Joondalup vs Perry Lakes (Wolves 2-0)
QF3 - Mandurah vs Rockingham (Magic 2-1)
QF4 - Warwick vs Willetton (Senators 2-1)

Can finish 1st: Wolves, Lightning, Buccs
Can finish 2nd: Wolves, Lightning, Buccs
Can finish 3rd: Wolves, Lightning, Buccs, Senators
Can finish 4th: Buccs, Flames, Senators
Can finish 5th: Flames, Hawks
Can finish 6th: Hawks, Senators
Can finish 7th: Suns, Giants, Tigers
Can finish 8th: Suns, Giants, Tigers
Can finish 9th: Suns, Giants, Tigers

WOLVES (vs Suns)

- Defeat the Suns, Buccs lose at least one game OR

The top-6 positions in the mens SBL have been decided...

1st - Wolves
2nd - Lightning
3rd - Buccaneers
4th - Flames
5th - Hawks
6th - Senators

Even though there are still two games remaining today, the above standings cannot change.

As far as 7th/8th in concerned, these will be determined by the result of the postponed Tigers vs Hawks game at 5.00pm this afternoon....

(a) Hawks defeat Tigers
7th - Giants
8th - Suns
9th - Tigers

(b) Tigers defeat Hawks
7th - Tigers
8th - Giants
9th - Suns

One thing should be said, despite all the trash talking on here directed at the Wolves, either for their coach or salary concerns or poaching etc...

What they have been able to achieve on the Men's side of things is truly remarkable. Take a look at the team that have made/won Grand Finals across the last 5 years:
Slammers
Eagles
Redbacks
Cougars
Tigers (minor premiers with Turner)

All 5 in the bottom 6 this year. Slammers and Cougars have missed a few playoffs now, but the Wolves continue to finish top 4. Sure, their GF record is average at best, but credit where it’s due team

and the one thing that has changed in those GF years to now is what those clubs spend on SBL. Slammers, Eagles, Redbacks and Cougars have not capped out in every year like wolves.

Wolves consistently spend the cap as they have the money due to the MASSIVE catchment area, massive junior competition and full access to courts.

i dont begrudge that and the wolves do amazing things with what they have ... but thats what you can do with 5-6 paid staff ...

The common denominator is SPEND for the Wolves ... not talent or development.
Be as arrogant as you want wolves fans, but give any of those clubs the same catchment area and same ability to consistently spend, and a bunch of paid staff with specific jobs and things may be a little different!

ahwooooo ... bought not built

Slammers will be bottom until they can secure some "aussie-yanks" or significant help, they really need 4 import quality players to be competitive.

Eagles need 2 x solid imports to be competitive.
Cougars need 2 x solid import to be competitive.
Cockburn will be bottom 1-4 until help arrives for Gavin.

Mandurah looking in better shape then all of above, if Grace hangs around however they still another 20/20 player off the 8.

Men's first round predictions?

Wolves vs Suns - Braun didn’t play on the weekend. If he’s out Wolves 2-0 both games by 20+. With him still 2-0 wolves with games probably within 10 points

Lightning vs Giants - Upset could be on the cards here. Game 1 in kal is daunting for any opposition, think Giants take that one. If lakeside win game 2 back them in for game 3. Lakeside 2-1 by a slim margin.

Gero vs Senators - gero in 2. Full team for first time all year expect them to win this series comfortably

Flames vs Hawks - PL hugely inconsistent all year. Rocko 2-1

womens qtr final predictions.

lakeside vs suns ( 2-1 )

its a obvious statement but whoever shoots the 3 ball the best wins this match-up . both teams play a similar style in offence. lakeside will be too big and control the boards which will be enough to get over the dangerous suns.

Mandurah vs rocko ( 2-1 )

no bigger rivalry then this one ! can rocko turn the tables after the magic knocked them out in qtr final play last season after being the higher seed?. can rocko contain the dynamic backcourt of milo and brown ? can Mandurah contain the big 3 of boag, allen and garbin ? Mandurah never been beaten in a finals game at their new venue , this will be enough to get them over the line.there will be some bruises in this matchup.

hawks vs wolves ( 2-0 )

the hawks are the hottest team in the competition and are smashing teams to bits - ambar land will battle her big heart out in the paint but she will get worn down by McKay Donovan and burton and Teasdale.
if priyni denehey and belcher can find some range and they can shut cherry down they might get close .

senators vs tigers ( 2-1 )

with the senators getting back villegas and Hepburn and possibly hooper they have got to many options in offence for the tigers . barr is in great form and howard is capable of scoring big as well. tigers just don't have the consistent fire power to rack up a big score . senators play a fast pace high scoring game. if the tigers can slow it down to their tempo then they will get game 2 at home - they deserve to get 1- win for their efforts this season but it wont be enough to stop elimination.

Tigers really underachieved with the level of investment and the roster they had this year.
Considering they had 2 imports and 2 'fringe NBL players' as has been talked about above as well as a roster that has a high level of experience and what many would believe to be a high profile coach, to miss the playoffs is a real under performance

It goes to show there is more to it than just spending money to recruit high level players. Ironically both the Tigers high level aussies in Scott and Hussey are Cougars juniors. Cougars next crop of elite juniors all jumped ship from Willo to Cockburn. Will be interesting to see how that plays out in the next few years

Parsons had the same budget as Nener just used it to get working holidays visas and found the imports jobs
Hardly would say it's career suicide since he went on to win another championship within two years
Agree that the GM would’ve set this up for himself to take the men’s role. Nener will be better off at another club

Yes Parson recruited very well, no doubt abt that.

But that was exact reason why Parsons left as they took his relatively small budget that he did have away.

If Parsons coached at Cockburn 2018 & 2019 doubt they would be making playoffs.
Parsons is the best coach in the SBL but you still need to have the cattle!!
