Premier League player movements(civil discussion! )

Yes, I know there have been recent threads regarding this but ultimately it turned into Webber bashing along with the other old chestnuts.
So for this thread I propose rules
A)No mention of the Webbers and any other discontent at Norwood
B)No bashing of Eastern and junior development etc
C)No Vozzo, Jordy Wilson, Rigby Alphabet bashing
D)No Petty and South bashing
E)Southerns finances

This may turn into a very short thread without those targets but I think local basketball public would like to know confirmed player movements as well as a couple of coaching vacancies.

I admit I have in the past put my 2 cents worth into the above targets, but clearly it all descends into a lot of name calling and real information is hidden amongst all the bullshit.

Where did DJ signing come from? Brine to replace Majok, heard maybe a couple players to come in for some bench strength. Would another club be interested in Rios? This year was a role player with a stacked starting 5, year before put up a ton of points as 1st, 2nd and 3rd option at eastern. Previous years at forestville was a very steady contributor. Would have been a good partner with Allmon at South this year. Think he is a lot better than a bench player for eagles but not a "franchise" player he was at eastern, with a better rounded team would think he would be good pickup depending on price.

Is anyone disappointed in the Tuesday night reserves now that reserves are split to different venues. It use to be interesting to see all the teams in one venue and who is playing for whom. Now it just feels like a crappy let down. At least there is more parking available.

The refing was way beyond poor last night. Seems like some of them haven't worked out that you need to blow to make a noise when there is body contact or mentally are they still on holidays? Or could it be that some of these refs are getting burned out by how many games BSA are making them do each week.

But really doubtful with women, will struggle to field PL team, nearly impossible to have reserves team, does that mean they fold? Women will make South's team from a year ago look like America's national team. No money in kitty, all gone from KB and Willie. 18 team terrible, lost to Woodville div 2 team during bye week so nothing there. Management really screwed up that club.

Yes I guess they could have made a profit but was that before or after the special levy imposed on all players to reduce debt or any special bail-out money given by supporters of the club. 30K is nearly the total budget of both teams at Centrals. Can't even have Starling act as jdo and even running camps there, teams are plummeting especially on girls side. Their 14 1 girls lost 92 to 2, never seen a score like that in district, let alone div 1. Previous president plans of having "elite" club and only having div 1 and 2 teams was laughable, so players left, most ironically to north, so if imports have a camp for Centrals players I doubt they'd have enough to play 5 on 5, so Starling would struggle financially. Only way is if Starplex create a job for him.

then you haven't been around basketball for long. centrals were routinely losing by this margin only 10-15 years ago on the boys side, and they would rarely field girls teams

im told southern have found $$$ to splash around (where from - who knows) but they've alienated too many locals with how this offseason has been handled.

koop will be a below-average import at best and probably the best on the team. younger players will likely get rotation minutes

sturt will be well-coached again, mavs will at least have imports to rely on and south have snapped up some of southerns better players

southern will be in the running for the wooden spoon.

The standard of the PL is a sine wave. It's downward trending in to a trough right now. Teams who overspent in the past are having a correction applied. Once those people on committees who have called it in disappear, the big spending will re-occur and it will trend upwards. That is the nature of the Premier League in SA.

Was that a lesson in English or Accounting, 702? Either way, I'm sure that Southern's committee could have used those words of wisdom a few years ago.

You still haven't explained why any PL club wouldn't be transparent with their spending to their members. Everyone knows the likes of Forestville, Norwood, North and previously Southern spent a lot on their PL programs.

^^ I think it is obvious that some clubs in the past have had poor financial controls and this has manifested itself in clubs being unable to meet their financials obligations from time to time.

Though there is an argument that at times sponsorship dollars are directed away from the club generally to PL programs the way I look at it is the drain on parents to support the PL programs. By that I mean the total amount of fees per year per player and how much of those fees are directed to the PL programs.

On that basis I suspect Norwood and Forestville are the highest in charging fees to juniors, including domestic competition fees, and diverting to their PL team

Don't let the fact Southern hasn’t signed any big names fool you. Their budget is still among the biggest in the league just they’re spending it on lesser known Aussies (Humphries, another WA kid) and poor imports (that reserves guy)

Reply #775747 | Report this post

It's quite simple. Committees earmark x amount of dollars to a PL program. But a breakaway element within the club then diverts funds (bar for example) to pay for players above and beyond what the committee agreed upon, and the committee has no idea that money even existed. Cash from bottle returns is another good little cash kicker.

I've read further down: they contradict each other and it is not stated which takes precedence over the other.

I imagine the intent was to disqualify foreign players from 3.4a's exemption, but then why not simply state "A non-foreign player who has played more than 100 games..."

I agree it's very poorly worded. My point is that the by-laws are far from "clearly stated", as was 376's assertion.

Assuming Petty was there when Alex was at Southern so connection there but if Dean is coaching Norwood as is widely rumoured, would have thought that would have been more attractive apart from fracture in that club. As for Mays I would argue that any Club who got a dud import didn’t do enough homework. Whether North did or didn’t do enough their decision to tear up the contract shows they are not about winning at all costs if they had concerns.

https://basketball.realgm.com/player/Mike-Malat/Summary/41963

Someone should have told Norwood that there are 10s of 1000s "NBA Skills Trainers" in the US. Anyone that wants to get into coaching that has been near an NBA player calls themselves an NBA Skills Trainer LOL

A Web will actually be a good coach one day I got no idea why they don't just give it to him officially. Both men's and women's teams infact.

Let's hope they coach better than they ball. I think the players that are not lining their pockets, or a Webber, will see right through this whole caper and move on pretty quickly.

Leaving the program in a strong position? He inherited that group, minus Mudronja who left College early. What did he do other than coach out the (losing) season?

Olivia Thompson has been cleared from Forestville to South... maybe Tricky Dicky will have a chance of finals this year?

Will it be a case of Gaze and the Kings with South? Getting some good signings in Starling and Johns but they aren't fully committed it sounds with footy on the agenda. But with their proven success at this level is it enough to overcome a terrible coach who has already gone back on his development strategy.

nah south will make the 5, resign the coach, money will run out and so will the players and they will end up in a hole again

look back a few years when they recruited a heap of players for their girls team, got a good import, finished 3rd, then all the players left and have been terrible since

Compare that to Forestville who spend all their money on the men's team and legal costs at the expense of developing their junior boys programme which is very ordinary for a club of their size

#184 It shows you how much you know about how financing a team actually works, in this case Forestville. It's pretty common knowledge that the coach sources sponsorship to then spend on players and the club pay for the coach fee and other costs associated to manage a team. Probably other clubs would have the same model (maybe not Norwood who just paid for two American coaches).

Forestville look to have finally invested in their junior programs and hired a full time on court Junior Development Manager while having another look after the admin. Long process to turn their boys teams around, no action for way too long.

So I can be clear on how a great club manages its finances is the following correct?

So Forestville having one of the highest junior subscriptions, both in cost per player and number of players, only contributes a pittance to the PL teams as the highest cost, player payments, is covered by the hard work of the coaches in getting sponsorship. What I don't understand is how are they wasting all the payments from parents as it can’t be on junior development of boys. Something is not clear to me. Is it legal costs? Is it excessive coach costs which is used to supplement player costs. Are they still paying of the cost of brown paper bags and envelopes used in the past in the bar?

Any insight in how Forestville works would be appreciated!

There is a lot of hate directed towards Forestville, and some of it is certainly justified.
There were several board members in the past whose kids and moved out of juniors, who were happy to let the junior program fall apart. Their focus was on their role on the board and reflected glory from PL victories.

Fortunately, this has changed. It has been a slow transition as some held on far too long, but it is finally happening. Sharon Simons as JDO is outstanding and was definitely required. I understand the criticism of Mays from the past, but from what I have seen at Forestville trainings, he is excellent getting around to the junior groups and being active when there. He does a hell of a lot more than Dickel ever did - but that wouldn't be hard. The only thing Dickel left was problem after problem. Croxton unfortunately was similar. It appears that once he got the job he thought that he was on easy street and sat back and relaxed. My understanding is that after he left, the club found thousands of unopened emails that had been sent through to the club. It is taking a very long time to sort through it all.

The boys program at Forestville has been an issue for a while. Thankfully it is starting to be turned around. The boys coaches list is really good. Having Andy Simons and Jason Dix as coaches at U16 level, followed by Brad Haydon at U18 is exceptional. Andy well and truly knows he has very limited talent to work with at the moment, but the team is doing pretty well (relatively speaking) and is improving. He really is a terrific coach.
It will take time for all the work to flow through, but the boys program is definitely going to improve.
