Breakers sign Dan Shamir to two year extension

Congratulations to Dan and well done to the club for giving him time to build

Why 2 year extension?

Terrible run with injuries and other issues, so extension gives him another chance.

But surely 1 year to build and see how he goes.

Webster & Abercrombie are signed and I believe the club wants to extend Delaney and are talking to at least one of the imports about coming back.

I would bring back Henry & Hopson and look to upgrade on Brandon Ashley.
Too foul prone although if the other Breakers could stay in front of their opposition player he wouldn't have to leave his man as often to help and wouldn't give up as many fouls and offensive rebounds. Loe is having just as many foul issues with the way NZ's D has been.

Henry / Weeks
Webster / Rusbatch
Hopson / Abercrombie / Ngatai
Delaney / (replacement for Majok)
Import / Loe / Vodanavich

T.Webster / Ili / Weeks
C.Webster / Henry / Rusbatch
Hopson / Abercrombie
Delaney / Vukona / Vodanovich
Import / Loe / Salt

Cut ashley, Ngatai, majok and Deng.

mystro - will Webster want to stay, given the reports about him wanting out just prior to the start of this season, and NZ saying 'no'? Or is that now all sorted and he's happy to stay?

How long does a role have to be redundant before you can employ someone using the same (old) title?

We all know he is the coach and it sounds odd in commentary for them call him anything but 'coach'.

I don't understand why they bothered with that nonsense.
If Brasswell wanted to claim unfair dismissal, I doubt any court (even in NZ) would be fooled

Despite everything I still can't believe they had the gall to make a head coaching role redundant on a professional sports team.

Webster is under contract for next season and behaving like a pro after the was denied a release.
I believe he's happy in NZ.

Deng was a injury replacement for Loe Anon, he was released once Loe returned.

Apparently the team is close to signing an extension for Webster too.

Yeah, would be great to get Tai Webster. I would bring Ashley back if they can - he's been one of their best players apart from the foul trouble, and some of those calls were harsh to say the least.

Breakers are not actually far off, and if it wasn’t for all the injuries to key players I think they would be top 4.

Salt would be great, 7' rim protector. You are better paying good money for good locals with two good imports.

This smacks of a cosmetic "Look! we're steadying the train from going further downhill" in a vain attempt to stop potentially losing sponsors and support for next season.

It's a good move, NZ have had a lot misfortune this season, he comes across as a smart coach. NZ look reasonably settled with no players whining. Get a couple good kiwis back from Europe and they will be strong.

Fotu would start at PF taking minutes from Delaney and stunting his further development.
Fotu would also be on decent money.
A Webster Brothers front court would be fun to watch.

All the players seem to like Shamir and his assistant (at least publicly), time to start building some continuity within the club.

I would re-sign Henry (especially if Weeks moves on) and Hopson. Ashley's got talent, but he’s had time to adjust to the refereeing and his teammate inability to stay in front of the ball and yet he’s still struggling. He should go.

I think the Tall Blacks, nba games and Next Stars has disrupted them. Have a good buildup next year with a proper preseason and Shamir can go coach of the year.

Rob Loe is having just as many foul issues as Ashley. It's a combination of the refereeing and the team defence IMO. I’d like to see Ashley stay.

NZ aren't spending what Sydney and Melbourne throwing around.
Have you seen Shamir play Vodanavich anywhere else this season?
He isn’t quick enough to guard most 4’s but strong enough to body up on 5’s.

I don't think anyone really does. I reckon the best chance of him playing NBL was at Melbourne when Henare was there.

TBH I would be surprised if Tai Webster came back to NZ as well, I think him and Isaac are enjoying their time in Europe and earning great money.

The reports I've seen in the NZ media suggest he was on a 2-year deal and that the club have only exercised their extension option on his third year (taking him to 2022).

If that's the case, exercising the 3rd year option so early is another mess up by Walsh;

You don't exercise a player's third year option halfway through Year 1; so why do it to a player?

The whole club is one of the most poorly run professional sports teams I've ever seen.

Tai Webster indicated on Twitter last week that he might come back. That's what started the whole discussion.

The money in Europe has fallen away a bit unless you're in the top 50 to 100 top tier teams. It’s still good but with the nbl now paying more it’s easier to stay and top up your money elsewhere at seasons end.
