Perth Lynx Woes

What's happened to the Lynx this year?
Quite simple to work-out when comparing their best 8 players from this season with their best 8 from last season...

2018/19 >> 2019/20
Ebzery >> Ebzery >> Same
Mansfield >> Mansfield >> Same
Schwagmeyer >> Schwagmeyer >> Same
Steindl >> Payne >> Same
Farnworth >> Whittle >> Same
Allen >> Allen >> Same
Taylor >> McGee-Stafford >> DOWNGRADE
McPhee >> Atkins >> DOWNGRADE

The problem lies with the selection of imports. Atkins should have been an upgrade but has turned out the opposite. McGee-Stafford was never going to be an Asia Taylor but has ended up as a dud.

Andy Stewart has copped some criticism (funny enough, only on Hoops) and some responsibility needs to be taken by the coaching staff, but the Atkins/McGee-Stafford combo hasn't worked. And that problem has been amplified by the two of them missing a combined 12 games out of 14 due to injury, effectively leaving them with one import for most of the season so far.

You replace Atkins and McGee-Stafford with the the likes of, for arguments sake, Nurse and Russell, the Lynx are then possibly a top-3 team.

It's a fine line in the WNBL when it comes to import selection, and can make or break a season.

McGee-Stafford and Atkins - both were WNBA top-10 draft picks. I know the WNBL is strong but something's not right.

Ebzery is even better than last season's version. She has been superb.
Mansfield is way better than last season's injured version.
Payne started well but has dropped off, and doesn't defend bigs or rebound as well as Steindl, so advantage Steindl on that one.
Allen this season is heaps better than she was last season. Not even close.

But yes, the import combo hasn't worked at all for whatever reason. McGee-Stafford's production not been a big surprise to me based on her WNBA play, but I was certainly expecting more from Atkins, at both ends of the court. How much of that is her, and how much is our failure to utilise her, I'm not really sure.

What has stood out to me most this season - other than the choking late in game - is how much worse our D is than previous seasons. We used to really get after teams and make life tough for them, and our rotations were sharp. That proactive defence is just a nice memory now.

Not sure why we went after a big 5. It doesn't really suit Perth's style. And with Allen's improvement it barely suits our needs either. I notice Andy tried plenty of small ball tonight - with Allen & IMS both benched - and tried some twin towers as well. The latter didn't really work. The former had an impact for a while but someone like Russell is way too good to do it against for any length of time.

Perth Lynx coach Andy Stewart says his job on the line after 90-75 loss to Southside ends hopes of playing finals

they are the only professional team in the wnbl, under the wildcats regime. They havent gotten the goods. They had to get the championship in their first year but blew it in the GF. They have since failed miserably. Andy surely cant be renewed for next season - he has to go

There has been no development of the young local talent. He has tools at his disposal that other coaches would dream of having. And it's four years of no return. Perth management must make a change at the end of the season.

Old mate Georgiou has active this week, if the Lynx lose to Bendigo this week will he pull the trigger on Stewart as well? Or Stafford/Atkins if they have another dud game?

Yes it's interesting he replaced one underperforming centre but not the other one who has been even more below expectations

That's probably because the WNBL season is almost over, particularly for the Lynx. They may send an import home (to save money) but certainly won't replace one. There's no point.

Too late now, yeah.
I think the home loss to Canberra 2 weeks ago was the final nail in the coffin for our playoff hopes this season.
The WNBL season starts & ends in a flash. Meanwhile all the northern hemisphere women's leagues are running at the same time and run for a lot longer, so there aren't many players becoming available in time to be chopping & changing. Not star players who are going to make an immediate positive impact, anyway.

The game that will determine Andy Stewart's career will be on January's 22 against Canberra.

coaching wise I believe Deanna smith would be a good option. she has respect on the eastern seaboard with her playing career and is already a championship winning coach. she would need a strong assistant coach to help.
in my opinion andy stewart is the best coach but the club just needs change for many reasons.

Deanna Smith got outcoached by a 22 year old in the SBL Finals, nice playing resume but not a great coach!

Doccy would be certainly worth giving an opportunity to, she is very professional and passionate

The 22 year old is a disciple of the assistant Petrik so make him the coach and the disciple the assistant.

Doccy is an egomaniac. Giving her keys to the Lynx is a recipe for disaster.

Yeah because Stewart's tenure has been a raging success. And no, the bankrolled kid is barely up to SBL standard, there are several other much more experienced coaches who deserve the Lynx assistant gig if Petrik is promoted to head coach (would be well deserved as he has definitely done his time, and has the runs on the board with what he did with the Flames Women)
