I feel like a lot of players get too tentative at Opals level - backing off from the type of play that got them selected in the first place. I doubt they're instructed to, it's just natural to defer to the established vets.

Lightning made a meal of that 3rd q. That was ugly.

Lightning-Southside is off to an interesting start. A battle of tempos in the 1st Q with neither team getting the upper hand.
Love Adelaide's aggression but they need to learn they don't need to force something immediately if they don't get a good option from the fast break.

Flyers just too solid & composed. Didn't make the little flurries of loose play that the Lightning did and that was about the only difference. Nearly 50% from 3 didn't hurt either.

Not sure what to make of that match. Canberra's hearts really didn't look in it for most of the game. No one was particularly effective for them until the game was in its death throes and Nurse & Griffin started to score freely.
I expect it will be a very different story in front of their home crowd in game 3 though. I got a bit of a rope-a-dope vibe from them today.
Melbourne would be concerned about how trash their offence is whenever Lindsay Allen is not out there running things. They need to come up with some set plays other than aimlessly running clock and then jacking up a desperation shot at the end of it. When they're rolling like they were in that first half they are fun to watch though. Ezi & Cayla need to both stay well away from foul trouble in game 3.

That was a retaliation foul after Rocci wiped her out and nothing was called. Rocco gets away with so many fouls if you pay attention to her game.

This game( situation) Froling instigated it ( pretty normal for her) by trying to walk through the Melbourne group with elbows held ridged and high and then deliberately connecting with Cunningham, who brought her hand up "under" Froling elbow, to which Froling went fir the Oscars move of the offended head flip, when no contact was actually made. all Froling could give the Oscars a run fir their money when it comes to trying to draw a foul, have done it since juniors, girls used to scream at the drop of a hat lol.

Cunningham is certainly a bit of a hot head, but flagrant and unsportsmanlike she's not.

Just wondering if we can get a Canberra game where one of their staff are NOT commentating - Graf - game 1, Wilson all season long. Surely there are other candidates out there. One of the eliminated coaches - not Andy!

Froling initiated the 'fracas' and Cunnigham is too feisty to pass up the opportunity. If the league is consistent, both players get cited but I suspect that won't happen :(.

Agree - Melbourne's offence is nowhere without Allen but their D on the 3-point line was top-notch. Not sure they can repeat it though for another 40 minutes.

Cunningham fouled out 18 times in her college career, including five times in her senior season. She ranked 10th in the nation in personal fouls. Our refs do a very poor job officiating a player that fouls several times on most possessions on top of the niggling flagrant stuff that occurs a few times every game.

Nothing much in this incident anyway so move on. As far as playing the dramatics, this is the Sophie Cunningham playbook 101. Start an incident and then play the victim while the Boomers bench complain. Sophie Cunningham is a grub that should have already been suspended by the league a few times.

Don't like Cunningham at all as a player, nor Froling or Rocco for that matter, not a Boomers or Caps fan, but when you look at the crap Rocci gets away with, the dramas Froling brings( and always has) and put Cunningham into that mix, Cunningham doesn’t start it, but she sure as hell has the last word. she’s agro big time and not one to mess with.

Canberra have a reputation for wanting teams that challenge them to be reviewed and players suspended, shame other teams don’t do the same to them

But they also seem to pick players that like to play the victim card, those players are the ones that hang around ( since Gorris took over that is) Graff was a way better coach

WNBL stars fume as Cunningham dodges ban despite high contact charge

Canberra Capitals players Marianna Tolo and Keely Froling have hit out at the WNBL after the league's review panel didn't suspend Melbourne Boomers WNBA import Sophie Cunningham for Wednesday night's semi-final decider.

A fair few tweets out there, including from Froling & Tolo. It's a pity it takes something like this to get a bit of WNBL engagement on twitter.

FWIW I still think both players share the blame for the incident, and more to the point I don't think it's worthy of a suspension anyway.

The WNBL agrees that it's not a good look.
Two Capitals stars face financial sanctions for several juicy social media posts that questioned the WNBL's ruling on a controversial semi-final scuffle.
Canberra on Tuesday night confirmed to foxsports.com.au that it’d received a penalty notice from the league after centre Marianna Tolo and forward Keely Froling publicly took umbrage at the $250 fine handed to Boomer Sophie Cunningham by the Incident Review Panel (IRP).
Tolo and Froling have been cited for breaching the 'public criticism’ rule and issued a please explain. They and the club have 48 hours to respond to the WNBL.

Indeed.
Melbourne good, but just too streaky. Caps have reliable star power and it got the job done yet again.

Boomers had their chances last night. Tight game with a 4 point margin when Garrick somehow missed the easiest layup you'll ever see, Epoupa buries a 3 at the other end, and that was effectively game over. As a team they can still hold their heads pretty high IMO. Magbegor will be better for the experience.

Grand Final series should be excellent.

Why not? It's a 40 minute game and you're allowed to play all 40.
In game 2 with the game well in the bag, Garrick took a shot with 2 seconds left.

Barely better than nothing, given the awful success rate of the streaming.

But the main thing I don't get is why the stream doesn't get archived somewhere so you can view it later. Right now it is live or nothing. For people in WA in particular the time difference is a killer. But for any given game there's gotta plenty of people who might be unable to watch it live but would catch the game later on if they could. It seems like such a fundamental thing to me. The time and expense is all in getting the telecast done. Once they've done it they're limiting how many people can view it.

Shout out to my guy Guy Molloy who's also super consistent but in a different way.

Was a great game of hoops showcasing Australian women's basketball.

Was surprise by the lack of use of bench players from both teams. Only playing 6 players obviously hurt Flyers more.

Great GF series by Bec Cole. She heavily carried the team in both games!

Cole should have been MVP but in the second half of both games she was far less effective. Caps d adjusted well in the second half of the first game, but she took herself out of last nights game through some silly fouls. Still the girl can ball and so good to see her have an injury free season

I'm assuming that you mean Molloy is a coach who continually has star players and yet never wins a grand final series!!!!!

Cole should be going to Tokyo, she has improved out of site since she left the Boomers.

Now what could the reseaon be?

Correct. AND he retains employment despite of it. Amazing.

The Caps collectively have always been a bit entitled and inclined to whinge. Tolo is nothing like Cambage, though. She's worked her tail off to get healthy and is a really nice person and teammate. Easily my favourite player on the roster and I'm really glad to see her back on court and succeeding.

I'm far from a Molloy fan, but when the 3rd-best roster finishes in 3rd place that doesn't strike me as a reason to sack a coach. I mean at least the Boomers beat Canberra in a playoff game. Southside couldn't do that and you don't hear too many calls to sack Chambers (and no should there be - she's a great coach). Melbourne have had some very flaky seasons but I thought this season their results were pretty much in line with their talent.
Canberra has legit international-caliber stars in Epoupa, Nurse, Griffin & Tolo. That's always going to be tough to beat.

Molloy's Boomers did push Capitals to 3 close games in their Semi Final and didn’t go out in straight sets. Boomers have less talent this year than Capitals and Flyers.

How often has a healthy Tolo not played in or won a wnbl grand final?

A real game-changer defensively in the wnbl.

Tolo outplayed Russell in the GF series. Tolo should have got best defensive player of the year! No doubt Flyers will chase more talented bigs for next season!

Russell had a tremendous season overall, but yeah Tolo had her number in the GF series. Adding that reliable mid range jumper has made her more of a weapon offensively too. She's had a great last couple of months and I'm stoked for her (and the Opals).

never underestimate Tolo - she held USA's no. 1 tall Griner a few years ago and was doing well at the Sparks until her ACL

You have to remember Mercedes Russell is 23 years old. Outstanding human and pretty fine basketballer.
Southside Flyers will be fat better next season. The hunger will burn deep.
