Bendigo was an odd choice for someone wanting PG minutes. Townsville makes a lot more sense. But yeah, signing with your 4th different pro team wouldn't have happened to many 18 year olds.

for some clubs this next season will be a disaster ; maybe there will only be 6 left for the following season . No draft, no max payments, no imports for the weaker clubs - .sound like the perfect way to go to kill a good sport!

Madgen trying to get the third pg spot in Tokyo. She played as a pg for sandy at the wc behind Ebzery and left Lavey on the bench.

She can do it but it's not her strength. Boomers would look better with a specialist PG and Madgen & Garrick on the wings IMO.
But yeah if Tess's main focus is a trip to Tokyo then I get why she'd want to prove her combo guard credentials this season.

With Seekamp now gone, a point guard or combo guard spot is up for grabs in Tokyo.

Lavey, Madgen and Seekamp have been chosen previously.
The only other pg or cg options are Mangakahia and Wallace. Garrick is not a pg and Cole seems to be strictly 3x3.

Atm, half-2/3 way through signings

1-Flyers - need a c (Cambage?)
Lynx - need a sf (Schwagmeyer?)
Capitals - need more depth at guard (inexperienced, injury prone)
Boomers - need a sf (no Allen or Kunek available)
Fire - need a pf (Garbin leaving?)
Lightning- need a pg (Seekamp gone)
Spirit - need a sf (not many top quality left)
8-Flames - need 1-4 (need 4 top recruits to just stay competitive)

you'd have to be a bit concerned about the Flames at the moment with only the one player signed.. Trying to think outside the box of the players left that they could potentially sign, but I'm thinking some of the following names could put together a fairly competitive roster:

Guards:
- Alex Wilson, Maddie O'Hehir - assuming they will be re-signing, although would not be surprised if Wilson stepped into the Nicholson opening in Adelaide being a SA junior.
- Kristy Wallace - no brainer, provided she is fully recovered from her knee issues. One would assume she is out of Canberra given the Smart/Tupaea signings and that she is the only big name left on their FA list.
- Abbey Wehrung - IMO has stalled somewhat in these past few seasons, but may be better off for a change in scenery.
- Lauren Mansfield - Probably not ideal to be sitting behind Whitcomb and Ebzery in Perth in an Olympic year given she could potentially challenge Madgen and Lavey for that final guard spot on the team. Wouldn't be surprised if she sought greater opportunities- I see her landing in either Adelaide or Sydney.
- Marena Whittle - similar to Mansfield, I see her opportunities drying up with the addition of Whitcomb back to the Lynx lineup.
- Vanessa Panoussis - NSW junior, has previously played with the flames but more recently has played in Greece. Would be a handy player off the bench.
- Alex Ciabattoni - Has played the last few seasons in Italy but I really liked what she bought off the bench to the table in that Lynx side a few years back with Whitcomb, Courtney Williams and Kunek.
- Toni Farnworth - unlikely she would leave Molloy's Boomers given he is the NZ national coach, but potential for increased opportunities could be enticing.
- Steph Blicavs(Cumming) - surely can't fit on the stacked Flyers roster, but has the experienced head and Opals experience that wouldn't go astray. Only question mark would be that last season she had a baby and whether she would relocate from Victoria - perhaps a move to the Spirit is more likely.
- Mikhaela Cann (Donnelly) - previously a Fire player, missed last season like Blicavs through having a baby. Gut feel with Cocks now expecting a baby is that she would return to the Fire though if she were to return to the league this season.
- Steph Reid - didn't really get an opportunity at the Flyers, can't see that changing in the next season.
- Nicole Romeo - IMO unlikely, but would still be good to have her home and see how she goes in the WNBL after so long away in Europe. Has been in Aus during isolation, so is definitely a possibility.

Forwards:
- Lara McSpadden - assuming she re-signs. IMO they could do better than Greaves in the backup forward spots, she provides good hustle and energy off the bench but is a bit clumsy being prone to turnovers/fouls.
- Mikaela Ruef - I believe she should now be naturalised after narrowly missing out on being eligible for Canberra last season, so would surely get around the no import rule.
- Rachel Jarry - left field and IMO her best is well past her, but I believe she is looking to return to the WNBL this season and her experience wouldn't go astray.
- Anneli Maley - I think she would benefit with extended opportunities, it would probably be a same-same season as the last if she stays with the Flyers. Could possibly play a similar role as Kunek last season by stretching the floor as an athletic 3.
- Abby Bishop - gut feel is that she will go to Europe, but would be a decent get if she stays put in Australia.
- Christina Boag - previously has played with the Flames, I liked what I saw from her in the glimpses we got last season from Townsville. Would be a solid bench option.
- Alice Kunek - unlikely given she has signed in Poland, but if the European season were to become unfeasible, I'd put my money on her returning to the Flames given she's stayed in NSW in the iso break.

Centers:
- Liz Cambage - obvious choice albeit unlikely IMO she would sign for the Flyers, but there may be some sort of connection with Hibbert being around the Bulleen Boomers back when Liz was there.
- Louella Tomlinson - would be a handy backup to Scherf, IMO they'd need an experienced campaigner to help Scherf.
- Nat Burton - has played in Europe the past few years, but would be interesting to see how she has progressed in her time away, I believe she is WNBL bound. I see her signing for Perth though.

Re #809336

Maybe College isn't an option for families who are worried about safety this year. There is no certainty that the season will proceed, and college kids have to apply for permission to leave the country from DFAT. Also no certainty that flights would be available either back to the US, or back here if needed in an emergency. I know this is a causing many families to think very carefully about their options. I wouldn't be surprised to see some local kids seeking local opportunities.

Sadly it's often who you know when it comes to selections ,
Wallace hasn’t played in 3 years, Shelley and Heal are way too young right now and Rocci , whilst she had good moments in WNBL because they had no other choice, her inexperience and lack of leadership showed ... as a PG she’s not up to world stage standard
And why does Tess Madgen continue to get selected
Three naturalised players can only take one

Liked what I saw in the few minutes she got last year so looking forward to seeing her next season, if only to see if I was right or wrong.

Seems to actually like, or at least be able to handle, physical contact in rebound situations, so she definitely could have an impact.

Realistically it doesn't matter who the Lynx or others are recruiting, the odds of the WNBL actually playing this season are super slim. With sicktoria in the state that they're in and borders closed in other states, particularly WA's harsh stance, a bubble is the only option. Given how poorly these athletes are paid (minimum wage is $13,000, below the poverty line!!) this option is not viable as most have other jobs aswell.

I tend to agree the likelihood of the season going ahead as planned is getting smaller by the day. I highly doubt BA/WNBL are competent enough to put in any contingency plans and are just blindly hoping this all goes away by November. With the season already planned to start with no fans, the Vic teams could always base themselves interstate. That's ok for Victoria but what about Perth? Would they have to play all of their games interstate. Anyone coming in to the state has to quarantine for 2 weeks so that would include the Lynx players when they return from an away trip. This is not going to change in the near future.

There is now a massive chance the WNBL season does not go ahead. Victoria officially in the 2nd Wave and unlikely to be open for business before October, the way NSW is going, they have one arm dangling off the edge of the cliff.

While presently being discussed by BA about hubs and due diligence being completed, I have no doubt the answer they will find is it will cost too much to do.

I think this presents an opportunity to cancel the season and put a planned effort together to help support the grass roots of Basketball to enable it to recommence stronger than ever when that time comes.

Keep as many players contracted (or subsidize some club $$) but throw them into associations to drive the participation rate up by holding clinics, skills sessions, engagement drives.

Sounds far better than players doing nothing or worse still playing a season that will be compromised by less talent, less sponsorship and maybe sending clubs to an early grave just to survive.

Given the speed of things changing (for the better and worse) August probably isn't the time to decide if the season is going ahead in December.

Re: Imports there's not one reason, there's a number. Together they are why the Clubs and League are better off going with one import in the short term, maybe long term. Again now isn't the time to make long lasting decisions.

Old players as DP's and a roster full of NZ players also. Clearly not developing anything for the future.

Only 5 kiwis and 5 naturalised in the wnbl amongst 90+ players

Top tier professional sport is a business. KPI's are centred on wins/losses, bums on seats and corporate sponsorship, not what young players have you developed. That is the role of second and third tier leagues, state leagues and junior representative clubs. Why people post the same rubbish bashing Molloy baffles me. He is paid to win games and put a product on the floor that attracts fans and sponsors. The Boomers have made the finals three years straight, have reasonable crowds and good sponsors (unless all of those signs are given away for free). He is doing his job.

Anyone know how many Vic juniors get to run through Boomers training sessions or development squad sessions before they head to CoE or US college?

looking at the WNBL free agency team tracker , few teams have signed all ten/12 players, Flyers may have their starting 5 but who else do they have, if they go into a bubble with 3/4 games per week for 7/8 weeks, they will all need decent bench support to get through that type of scheduling....cant see Cambage being able to keep up that,
Southside Flyers have 5 signed
Bendigo Spirit 10
Canberra capitals 9
Sydney Flames 8
Melbourne Boomers 10 but 2 are DPs
Adelaide Lightening are showing only 4 signed players
Townsville Fire 8
Perth Lynx 8

so still potential for up to 28 more signings, unless that tracker isnt up to date

Why wouldn't they turn up, it’s not going to be for that long, back by Christmas is it goes ahead , which listening to some of the coaches "interviews" on some club sites, it’s likely.

Still a few teams need to finalise their rosters , or announce players if they have

Only Sydney Perth and Townsville now have 10 roster spots filled
Melbourne still need backup PG
Adelaide need a PG and back up centre
Canberra, still have one spot for a 4/5
Bendigo need a back up 5 , unless they plan on using their two DPS in Pineau and Price to fill the openings
But Flyers need three spots filled, and of Cambage bails from the bubble scenario they will be needing a prayer , on paper their starters certainly have the edge over all the other teams
But guarantee their entire team will be based around Cambage .

Seems the bubble looks like is happening if teams are still signing players

Absolutely no experience in their PG position , they will use Nicholson in that role and the other two as backups surely !?

Same as their centres, one coming off injury, the other out of college. A shadow of the former Fire, look to be in rebuild mode.

Melbourne and Adelaide apparently have their PGs just not announced yet , so just two 5s and two 4s to be found before the start of November........not too many bigs ready for WNBL that are Australian made around right now .

Steindl would replace isenbarger, Allen, edwards or Garbin in the front court.

The article is quite clear....

"All eight WNBL Clubs will be able to draft into their 2020 official roster two (2) development players in an effort to prevent injuries and manage player loads. All 12 players in the official playing roster will be available to take the court in each scheduled game."

Which means 10+2

Teams can now have 12 players on their roster for game day , but two will be development players only.
So it's like every game is a home game as that’s what they could always do , with the away team permitted 10

Only 12 players will be going into the hub from each team with coaching staff and TMs, plus any support staff each club wants to pay out for

BA apparently is covering the costs for 15 people from each team

As for quarantine conditions nditions in return, I’d say bring in a hub for that long may give them exemption, so long as QLD stays virus free

The problems will occur with flights if general public are also Travelling with the teams on these flights, planes are like mobile incubators fit this virus

If Southside lose, they should just fold. Even the bench are opals past and present.
If bendigo come last, they should fold. Looks like they've gone even further backwards.
If boomers don’t make top 3, molloy should be fired.
If Lynx don’t vastly improve, Petrick is gone in 1st year with his much deeper squad.

How is Perth "much deeper" exactly?
To me we're looking significantly shallower than the team which had Schwagmeyer, Allen & Whittle coming off the bench.

Yes they are DPS even in the hub, the league is permitting each team to have 12 players on the roster for each game , same as they can for home games normally, but two must be DP
Most players except those on the minimum have taken a 15% pay cut ,
Most DPs are lucky to even get paid
And with many of the players either taking leave from their normal paid work or going part time, these women certainly aren't doing this for the money

Are bendigo going to win a game?
It’s very clear that they’ll be in the bottom 2 with Sydney.

Not a bad group of post players though ......Magbegor is going to be such an asset to women's basketball, not only is she a great player at the very start of her career, she also has her head on the right way, no ego, no crap coming out of her mouth unlike our DJ centre we currently have, she will be Australia’s main stay for many years yet

Aokuso , if she can come back strong from that ACL , she’s another one with huge potential

Smiths ongoing long term injury is a worry, but if she can get that right, she’s smart and talented .

Sherf, she’s probably the only one that’s not a lock in, she’s just never set the court on fire , needs to work much harder at her game, maybe maturity may now help her get there..

Lots of others on the fringe , Pizzey and ,Mac Kay, will be interesting to,watch in this short season ahead

Pizzey, mckay.. not a chance.
Mcspadden the only other in Aus who could make the leap.

After that you have to go all the way to anstey, greenslade, locandro, cochrane who are just freshman n sophomores and still no certainTy they will be senior opals level. But we are talkin 5 years or more before we have any idea.
After that... who knows. Not many 02, 03 Or 04 centres. Not until 05/06 where you see a decent number of them.

Flyers have 13 players listed, thought they could only have 12 due to the season.

De Angelo is out injured , only Flyers, Boomers and Bendigo with full sides confirmed, and they have all left to go into quarantine in Brisbane, Sydney has gone to Canberra to quarantine, so imagine Perth and Lightening will go straight to Townsville as no restrictions for them

Suppose we will find out full rosters in the next couple of weeks.

The longer rest time between games is for travel between venues, they are travelling by buses , that's a 5 hour bus trip each way , ridiculous schedule, coaches will need to play their benches if they are to finish the season out.
They should have started this last month , any player already carrying an injury isn’t going to last the distance that’s for sure. So they will want to be fit .

Steph Talbot hasn't played a competitive set of games since the end of last WNBL season and was clearly hungry for some solid basketball action.

Alex Wilson took ownership of the point position, and Abbey Wehrung looks set to start at two and be a back up for the one spot.

Marena Whittle brought the energies for all positions and is going to have a big impact on the floor at both ends."

The COE coach just confirmed in an interview that the kids at the COE are not up to this level.
The team played last year in NBL1 with a much better contingent and struggled to win any games.
It would ruin their confidence in 5 minutes, they are playing mid week in ACT at a tier 3 level

"So Sami Whitcomb pulls out of the WNBA grand final series over a month ago but has only just decided to pull out of the WNBL season now!? Yes family comes first and I can see why she has done it but the timing, not nice, really not nice. How can the Lynx find a replacement?"

Think she's known for a long time she wouldn’t play, this isn’t something you do in the spur of the moment, I mean they have known about the pregnancy for 9 months.

But whilst you still have Mitchell , Whitcomb or any other “naturalised” player won’t get on the Opals roster.....something she’s probably now realised with Brondello at the helm, so missing a six week season isn’t going to change that.

IMO “naturalised” players shouldn’t be in a national team anyway ..... Australian players who have lived and breathed the sport here in this country since childhood shouldn’t be pushed out by those who can’t make a national team in their own country .

You're wrong about the results btw, and judging by your post clearly a young bloke.

How about we just get Melbourne Boomers to stop filling the team with NZ international players and spread the teams who may actually play some Aussie juniors.

Then the WNBL could also initiate some sort of cap or points system so teams like Southside and Boomers can't stack 12 deep.

I would rather support Bendigo who is full of Aussie Juniors even if they lose every game, how many of the young Aussie girls are going to get any minutes in the other Melbourne based teams?

You're right mate but it isn't FIBA either.
Southside is an opals team and Boomers is a Tall Ferns team. (FIBA teams).
If they don't go 1-2 this season then something is wrong.
You make an ignorant comment about a team that is more full of kids than adults who have gone down the Vic Country pathway.
The other two have brands that are inclusive to either VJBL (Boomers) or Dandy (Southside) and apparently have a junior pathway but there are no players from those junior sides in them, just FIBA international players.
See how the season ends up and then judge would be the mature way to do it.
Supporters and young girls have to aspire to a pathway and Bendigo are the only Melbourne team providing a real pathway.
Again Bendigo, (like the AIS when they played in the WNBL), is giving their players great experience and exposure to adult FIBA senior players and it's something that WNBL supporters enjoy watching. Shyla last year comes to mind, she wouldn't have hit the court at the other two teams

Here here #253!! Perth did the same thing under Andy Stewart and never reached their potential. The old saying, a team of champions doesn't make a champion team applies. Well Bendigo lost first game to Southside by 15 according to flyers Insta account, but Southside didn't play Cole and Mitchell only played 1st quarter.
Bendigo lost by 40 something to Boomers but Lavey didn’t ,
Boomers lost by about 20 to Southside, but didn’t play Garrick , and Cole and Mitchell both played that game.

So no games really were a true reflection

Bendigo will struggle that’s a given, but they don’t have the budget of Flyers or the depth of the rest of the teams in the league.

The young "aussies" may well get a chance to play , but is it really an upwards step that you only get minutes because they don’t have anyone else, hard choice in some ways. Those other young players will get opportunity when they come up, against the likes of Bendigo, so are they really gaining anything .

Either way it’s good to see more young aussies playing in this league, but your right , boomers shouldn’t be filled like they are with NZ players, they should be classed as imports really.they can’t play for our national team, same as aussies can’t play NZ, so they are technically imports , probably something the league needs to address, but bit late now, the league should be about helping potential national players get more experience, not improving the quality of the Tall Ferns IMO

Well said, but I disagree with whether the young players playing other young players all the time, naturally if Bendigo is getting beaten easily there will be junk time but when Sandy is in the stands assessing for worlds and Olympics etc the main players will want all the minutes they can get.
All the social stories show these young Bendigo kids guarding WNBA and Opals so it has to be good for their development.
Shyla wouldn't have been given the opportunity if not at Bendigo, she is now recognised as WNBL level.
She would have been sitting on the bench whilst the NZ coach developed NZ national team members.

Nz players are needed and should be counted as local, just like nbl because the depth in Aus is terrible, especially with so many not playing or overseas.

In a league of 100 players, less than 8% are nzers.
I expect that percentage to go higher as the league grows.

From next season I expect 3-5 aussies will come back from college that are wnbl level every year and atleast 1 nzer.

You can already look at next year and say that these players will likely be on wnbl teams as contracted or DPs.

Maybe the rule on NZ players is the same as imports (2 per team). Given these players are from another country and an international rival so we be giving them a free hit on developing their players????
If it was a heap of Chinese or Japanese or Spanish etc that where all assemble in the one team would the view be different? They are not Australian so they should be imports.
Our juniors will develop if they are given the opportunity to play. You don't get better sitting on the bench for 38 minutes. Yes there is always short term pain until they improve, but put a few experienced players around them to support them.

Absolutely correct, but they are all on one team lol, it's like a training camp for New Zealand’s national squad.
No problems with New Zealand players coming into WNBL,think it’s a great thing, but they should be treated like imports, or let New Zealand put their own team in the league .

We are giving NZ women playing time to adjust and get confidence against the opals whilst denying that opportunity to the future opals squad members, it makes no sense. Understood it is within the rules but it isn't correct. These NZ girls don't dominate NBL1.

Not good enough for what.....if your talking about getting into the WNBA, how many college players go directly into a league like that, how often do you see them come here as imports, prove their game then go tomWNBA, even then few and far between, Whitcomb clear example, if a player is given opportunities their abilities can then be shown, they can't get that just sitting watching, only so much training any player can do without getting opportunities to put that into practice before they walk away from the game, see it all the time in the men’s comps.

A lot of those who have returned from college were DPS before they went,,and come back and they are still DPS for the first year or so, no short cuts at senior levels for the majority, just not enough teams for players, especially when they have to compete with imports simply because "imports" bring in crowds is often the theory behind it.

Good luck to all these players, unique opportunity and situation, but cants see Brondello sitting in the stands some how lol.

I have seen at least two articles where Brondello has said she will be there to watch kids like Heal. So if Shyla sits at Melb or Flyers last year and doesn't put the numbers up she did at Bendigo I doubt she is on the radar to go to a starting spot at Fire. These kids like Conti, D Angelo, Maley etc can all play well and get good numbers if given the confidence and most of all the playing time

343. I reckon I do and I wasn't being literal, it is about the principle.
I could have named another 10 kids. But Maley is an example of a young Aust Level junior having to go first to Adelaide and then to Sydney to get playing time because of the 2 teams here being stacked with Opals or Tall Ferns.
Heal was given the opportunity at Bendigo after being a DP or end bench player at Logan, Perth etc and showed she had the talent after she was sitting on the bench previously with no or little playing time. So in essence if NZ Boomers were at a 2 player limit and Maley gets that 20 mins per game she doesn't have to go interstate.
That is my point and BTW Shyla is only just now the Fire Starter after never starting in another team because she was given the opportunity at Bendigo and took it, if she was at Melbourne she wouldn't have played just like Conti and DAngelo

But that's why players go interstate.. to sign with teams that will give them an opportunity. Just the same as people in any other profession will move for an employment opportunity. If they want to stay at home but can see the local team won’t give an opportunity due to other players then that is on the individual.

Nzers will count as local, if the talent was. So deep in Aus, they would bring in more teams. They want a brisbane team but the best thing would be for it to fold and align every club with nbl.

I reckon it is on the club to get a coach who will develop and give opportunities to young Aussie kids as a priority over the international players he coaches. As 331 said its a training camp. Heal would not be in the position she is in if she chose to play at Melbourne last year.
