Former Sydney King & Boomer Matt Nielsen has been named Head Coach of the Austin Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs G-League team. He was an assistant coach with Austin last season.

Times are changing. Not that long ago, a 'foreign' coach would not even get through the front door of a team in the US. Congrats to Matt, as stated above I hope it leads to even bigger things in the future.

Wonder if in his interview he mentioned that his nickname is 'The Rockstar'.

Yep he's right. Matty now has the chance to prove that he can coach. He's been touted as a HC for years now and really has done nothing to warrant that selection. Look at what Weaver is doing now because of his credentails.

Nielsen is a brilliant development coach, especially of bigs.
He also had a very good rep generally at Perth.
Whether than translates into a good head-coach, well I guess there's one way to find out.
I'd say it at least puts him streets ahead of muppets like Gaze, who get HC jobs based purely on their playing history.
Besides, he's obviously impressed them in his time there.

They've been in a decline the past couple of years though
