Probably not for a bit. Majority of teams haven't even resumed training

Given the season starts in 6 weeks, if teams haven't started training after 10 months off they might be in trouble.

I would think teams will start practice games very early Feb and try to get 3-4 games in.
Interesting to see how the NBL1 teams will go as usually there are quite a few Big V/NBL1 practice games. But with the NBL1 season being later they might not be ready for games in Feb?
Any word on rosters?
I would imagine the only imports we will see are the ones that reside here?
- Standerfer
- Kaba
- Chuck Long
- Lemons
- Polk
anyone else that might come up from the lower divisions?

anonymous
Last month
heard the following:
Keilor - limited numbers at practice. No tsapatolis (footy), triplett (college) who were next young ones
Chelsea - Standerfor gone, Brasser gone???
Blackburn - seem to be recruiting heavily. needed to
Hume - similar without imports. Martin back?
Sunbury - Ish gone, added Trevon Clayton
McKinnon - Coach Maybank done a runner, gone...
Casey - surely had a bunch of retirements

Yes.
Hopefully their youth league comes along next few years. Fairly veteran heavy men's team for wp

Champ Men Blackburn
Div 1 Men Warrandyte
Div 2 Men Mildura

Champ Men - McKinnon from C'Ship to Wooden Spoon!!!!

McKinnon men's recently appointed head coach has now resigned due to work commitments. Not ideal with the season 6 weeks out.

McKinnon like many are in a bit of disarray. Casey the only men's Champ team to improve their roster.

Keep hearing there are indeed quite a few teams in champ and d1m that will still have imports because they've stayed here through Covid somehow?

I suspect that imports that were employed on the books for other reasons than playing for longer than 12 months would have been eligible for Job Keeper

Not sure Sth Pen realise they are in Champ Women. Signing YL and D2 players ?

Always hard to keep female athlete engaged. You will find most associations struggling to complete female rosters. If you follow clubs on fb many chasing players as late as last week.

There's no promotion or relegation after this season. Maybe some clubs are being smart and are seeing what happens as well as rebuilding cash reserves before wasting it on expenses like Big V.

" Always hard to keep female athlete engaged"
Amazing how a little cash does a great job of keeping 'Male players engaged' maybe try that approach for the female players and see what happens

anonymous
Earlier this month
who are these rumoured players? imports?
How has Casey improved their roster?

anonymous
Earlier this month
Blackburn as championship favourites. Big call unless they have added about 4/5 quality players

No promotion and relegation???? Why is this? What's the point of playing in 2021 then?

anonymous
Earlier this month
Apparently fixtures will be released in couple weeks and will be final. No draft etc.

Doesn't the season start in like 5 weeks?

yep season starts in 6 weeks. no fixtures is just another case of basketball victoria's lack of ability to provide an elite service.
even local footy leagues have had fixtures out for months.

Big V isn't an elite league so why should you receive an elite service?

Whether the league playing standard is elite is not the point. Why shouldn't we expect an elite service? They have full time staff.... I have to provide an elite service within my business or it goes somewhere else.
BV have a monopoly in the state and take advantage of it. Maybe there should be a breakaway group.
Local clubs can fixture tournaments in a couple of weeks with just as many games as the big v season

Breakaway group :) I wish I had a $1 for every clown in every state who says we should move away from the governing body. Clueless

clueless, like everyone calling for Larry to take over the WNBL, which is run by BA (the governing body)....... so the NBL should go back to BA's control cause they are the governing body?
maybe BV and BA should be held accountable? but how? get on the board? means getting voted in my member clubs.... and those that dont want to rock the boat.

One is professional sport one is community sport. When state bodies only pay 50k you get what you get.

Anyways back to talking about teams and players
Any club for sure having an import/s? And who?

Anonymous
Earlier this month
I've seen announcements from Camberwell D1M that their import Barkeley re-signed, Naaman Hightower from Los Angeles has been announced for Western Port Champ men, NE Bushrangers also posted someone as well.

Did they stay here during COVID? if not, good luck getting in the country

anonymous
Earlier this month
Flights are the first issue, $10k+ for a lot of them.
Then getting a Visa, is this likely atm?

WOWSERS why would you waste so much money on an import in a year where there is no promtion / relegation?

anonymous
Earlier this month
Very interested to see why a poster above thinks Casey has improved their roster.
Assuming core Aust contingent is the same:
- Donlan (2019 stats - 18.7ppg, 3.69rb)
- McInnes (2019 stats - 10.8ppg, 2.84rb)
- Hobba (2019 stats - 10.46ppg, 5.19rb)
- Louis (2019 stats - 8.92ppg, 5.12rb, 5.12asst)
- Chapman (2019 stats - 7.58ppg)
- Macaulay (2019 stats - 5.45ppg)
- Parker (2019 stats - 3.82ppg)
Now the 2019 import combo of Lemons and Polk average combined - 35.21ppg, 17.29rb
The 2020 import combo of Lemons and Coleman had 2019 averages combined - 39.92ppg, 16.2rb
So where are the improvements coming from???
Aust Contigent - I see Donlan could increase numbers with more opportunities and potentially Parker being a younger guy.
The rest are 18months older and at best I think they will perform to 2019 numbers. Likely they will drop.
Imports - unless they have bought imports across they are having to cover at least 35ppg and 16rb. (plus defense, go to guy etc)
I doubt that they have added Aussie players to cover the imports and decline in some of ageing players.
No doubt will be a contender but they aren't better than 2020 or 2019.

Is Chris Patton at Blackburn this year?

anonymous
Earlier this month
If that is true (No Patton) then don't see how Blackburn could have added enough players to make them contenders. Assuming no imports.

Jon Patton might make a come back as the footy career is over.

seems a fair few of the Big V imports are going to the NBL1 West

eastanon
Earlier this month
my question is if there are imports that stayed behind wouldn't their visas expire or how long does these visas last for?

Partner visas, bridging visas. Some require you to actually remain in Aus while they process it.

Which imports have gone west from BigV?

Any word on Corey Standerfer? Is he still at Chelsea or moved on?

Any word on Eric Miraflores?
Where is he playing now?

Orlando Johnson could be available very soon, certainly not an nbl player.

Would any Association be brave enough to give Eric a multi year deal?

Risky enough planning for him being there a full season.

Hume YL won by approx 10
Undermanned Hume men won by about 30.

Who are Longhorns?
Just fantastic to hear some games are starting back!

essentially a Sudanese team from Sunshine. Think they compete in competitions in Western Suburbs and juniors in AAU tourneys

Can read about Longhornshere: https://www.longhornsbasketballclub.com/
They don't have a singular focus on Basketball, but on using basketball develop young people to have life skills such as leadership and teamwork, keep kids off the street and emphasizes on the importance of Education in their lives.

From very limited news, these are my predictions for CM:
1) Casey
2) Hume
3) Chelsea
-------------------------------------------------
4) Blackburn
5) Keilor
6) Western Port
7) Hawthorn
8) McKinnon
9) Sunbury
10) Wyndham

My tips for comp winners
Casey or Chelsea in champ
Warrandyte or Warnambool for D1men
Craigieburn or North East for D2men

Anonymous
Two weeks ago
Why would any association want to give eric a multi-year deal at this point?
Warrnambool and North East are bold tips but I like the others ^^^

How is 8th too high for the reigning champs?

What was the result of Westernport Scm vs Mornington D2m

anonymous
Earlier this week
McKinnon have lost its big 3 (Stith, Tomata, Williams) which were probably at least 80% of everything they did, if not more. Without bringing in new imports this is huge.
Then they have lost their coach in Maybank, and from reports, then lost their newly appointed coach.
Therefore a ranking of 8th may be too high.

Anonymous
Earlier this week
833518 You are unaware or have forgotten that the McKinnon bench players comfortably defeated a full Kielor team including Imports in the last season (4 starters did not play). They have retained virtually all of them. There is no way they will finish as low as 8th. Have you seen how much talent most of the other mens champ teams have lost? There will not be many imports in any teams.

Mornington beat western port apparently.
That's not a good sign

YIKES! Morno are not even that good this year probs about middle of the pack in D2
Looooooooooooooooooooooong year ahead for Westernpot

anonymous
Earlier this week
Yeah I remember the last game of season that McKinnon bench beat Keilor.
Remembering Keilor didn't have Kaba, Bellman or Spencer who were a big part of their rotation and they were essentially done by that stage.
Great win for McKinnon.
But expecting Parkinson, Geer, Malvaso, Wilson to get 101pts, 29rbds, 15asst (Geer had a triple double) week in week out is a big ask.
Hopefully they can and they will be a contender this year.
I just don't see it.

Tex
Earlier this week
By the sounds of it at least they will beat WP

Anyone know the outcome of MCK v Waverly on Saturday?

McK lost by less than 20 I think. Waverley went very hard playing their top 5 a lot, McK ran a big group with a lot of Youth guys backing up after they just beat Waverley VYCM by 20+. McK SCW beat Waverley NBL1 women by 1. Wavery VYCW beat McK youth 1.

panthers
Earlier this week
wallan will be the suprise of d2 and a sleper to win it all!! coming down to them altona and mildura for the championship

anonymous
Earlier this week
Keilor lost to Hume over weekend by double digits.
Both teams looked rusty. Not sure if either has more players to add in.
Sist at Keilor, so interesting to see who Hawthorn have.

That's a great result by McKinnon.
Everyone is counting them out but the will surprise plenty of people and most likely make playoffs

anonymous
Earlier this week
anyone at the practice games that can provide updates on rosters?
Seems no clubs are doing their normal announcement of team rosters.

panthers
Earlier this week
Big 3 of Sharif Bray, Leigh Saffin and Dominic Bruno will circles around their opposition. To much speed and shooting

Don Bruno will put up big numbers in D2. Level fits him perfect, too selfish yet not good enough to help win any games at d1, proved that over last few seasons.

anonymous
Earlier this week
mentions above of Miraflores having multiple jerseys. Bruno must have collected a few by now also

anonymous
Earlier this week
Be very careful in trying to draw conclusions about future form from practice games. Coaches care very little about winning or losing in these pre season games.

Bruno and Saffin in the same team, yikes !!
They will be competing to lead the league for the most ill advised shots taken.....

anonymous
Earlier this week
I don't think the results of pre-season games will relate to the season proper, but the rosters will.
Likely that a lot of teams are still finalising rosters and working out who will actually play

Anonymous
Earlier this week
Hawthorn no imports, Sist, Barry or Bogart-King. Had to cancel a practice game due to lack of players

panthers
Earlier this week
bruno is head and shoulders above d2, him, saffin and the import are unmatched as a backcourt trio compared to anyone else. mildura has henry but not the speed to match

Head and shoulders? That why he put up junk empty numbers on the worst teams in their respective divisions the last couple of years?

Mirafoores should sign at Wallan and play with Bruno and Saffin

anonymous
Earlier this week
Sounds like Hawthorn in for a painful season.
With their YL team going 8-14 in 2019 and losing their main 3 men (Barry, Sist, Bogart-King) plus the very limited recruiting opportunities without imports etc...
Tough year ahead.

anonymous
Earlier this week
Revised CM predictions:
1) Casey
2) Hume
3) Chelsea
-------------------------------------------------
4) Keilor
5) Blackburn
6) McKinnon
7) Hawthorn
8) Western Port
9) Sunbury
10) Wyndham

You have Westernport at 8th when they lost to a div 2 rable?

Correct me if i am wrong but i thought SCM top 4 not top 3?

anonymous
Earlier this week
It is actually top 5 this year, but I think the top 3 listed will separate themselves from the rest of the pack

Mr Magoo
Earlier this week
My thoughts
2 horse race at the top then the rest
1) Casey
2) Chelsea
3) McKinnon
4) Hume
5) Blackburn
6) Sunbury
7) Keilor
8) Wyndham
9) Hawthorn
10) Western Port

Forgot to mention saffin is actually coaching the team as well even though they have a so called coach there.

Guarantee some players will quit at wallan. 5 guys who think they are the main man. Gorski will take more ill advised shots than all of the others that have been mentioned

panthers
Earlier this week
predictions: 1 wallan, 2 mildura, 3 altona 4 sherbooke 5 craigieburn 6 rmit

With a name like panthers and saying wallan 1st, you'll have egg on your face if they don't win it all.

updated SCM predictions
1) Wallan
Daylight
2) Casey
3) Chelsea

4) The rest

Southern Peninsula D1M playing Sherbrooke D2M tonight

Sth Pen will win by 50, Sherbrooke are trash

Southern Penn have kids from their U18's team playing and they're still struggling through VJBL qualification.

And Sherbrooke would struggle in C grade domestic
Sounds like a great game tonight

What are people hearing regarding numbers?
All clubs struggling for numbers for their senior teams?
How are youth squads struggling for numbers also?

anonymous
Earlier this week
Definitely will be a lot more YL players in senior teams this year.
Apart from 95% of teams not having imports, there seems to be a number of players that have moved to NBL1 teams as well.
I think will can be a positive to give more opportunity to younger players or players that have been in that 7-10 position the last couple years.

panthers
Earlier this week
I just don't see who around the league will keep up with them. Who do you think are the favorites in D2 outside of wallan and mildura? possibly altona? the goal is to score the most points and that is what wallan does best

Anonymous
Earlier this week
Warrandyte, Camberwell, Sth Pen will be teams to beat in D1M

Warrandyte and keysborough if they return their core group. Southern pen will struggle playing against men. D2 where you can rely on an import and some hired guns to d1 is a big jump.

Have Keysy replaced Enge? If not they will struggle
Camberwells import is a jet

CW
Sunbury
McKinnon
Bulleen
Hume
Casey
Keilor
Whittlesea
Hawthorn
Wyndham

anonymous
Earlier this week
Wouldn't Bulleen CW be title favourites with Tomlinson, Gaze, and Cole... You could surround that 3 with juniors and still be dominant

Bulleens champ womens team would hold its own in this years NBL1 south womens comp

Maybe swap McKinnon and Sunbury
Sunbury - Barnes, Beckly, Oreilly
McKinnon - Anstey, Toddhunter,Fadljevic, Cunningham

BB
Earlier this week
Predictions 2021
Top 2 Teams
SCM - Casey and Chelsea (significantly weaker competition this year)
SCW - McKinnon and Bulleen (depending how many games Bec Cole plays)
D1M - Geelong/Corio and Warrandyte
D1W - Bellarine and Camberwell
D2M - Whittlesea and Wallan
D2W - Wallan and Altona
Bottom Teams
SCM- Hawthorn/Wyndham
SCW- Whittlesea/Hawthorn/Wyndham
D1M- Melbourne Uni/Coburg
D1W- Melbourne Uni/Western Port
D2M- Melton/Mornington
D2W- RMIT/Mornington

Sp women will be so far back this year I think it's probably easier to not worry about bringing them up in ladder discussions

Hoopie
Earlier this week
Besides Hawthorn, we're there any other associations that all but went bust during 2020?
How closely do your suggested placings reflect what you know about the financial health of the various associations?

I think after this year how quickly some clubs rebound will show who was well managed/poorly managed pre covid.
Good clubs will bounce back, ones that don't recover will be blaming covid years down the track.
Will still be a lot of smoke to clear before we see

X
Earlier this week
My top 2 in each division
SCM - Casey, Chelsea
SCW - Bulleen, Sunbury
D1M - Corio, Shepparton
D1W - Bellarine, Warnambool
D2M - Wallan, Mornginton
D2W - Wallan, Altona

Dirk
Earlier this week
Champ Men - Casey, Chelsea
Champ Women - Bulleen, McKinnon
D1M - Camberwell, Warrandyte
D1W - Bellarine, Mildura
D2M - Mildura, RMIT
D2W - Corio, RMIT

Everyone seems to have Casey and Chelsea as the only ones in with a chance SCM

For Big V who big is the gap between each division?

BB
Earlier this week
I don't think there is a big difference between the bottom of divisions compared to the top of the division below.
Generally speaking, the top of Championship would very comfortably take care of the top of Division 1 though (likewise as you move down divisions). For example, Warrandyte and Sunbury in 2019 would've got smashed by McKinnon.

Who do casey and Chelsea have to be clear cut favorites.
Raheem isn't here, don’t believe Coleman is playing either.

Earlier this week
State Champ will be Chelsea/broadmeadows and in SCW Bulleen to run the table

Casey - Donlan, McInnes, Louis, Chapman, Parker, Taylor, Head, Hobba?
Chelsea - Standerfer, Riggs, Watt, Kaba, Inge, Dagostino
Hume - Prendergast, Mahboobi, Puondak, Rimes, Killy, Kafritas, Martin
McKinnon - Parkinson, Malvaso, Geer, Laycock, Wilson
Keilor - Long, Sist, Spencer, Bellman, Lukey, Masunda
Hawthorn - ???
Sunbury - Clayton, Sanders?
Western Port - Corletto, ?
Blackburn - Bennet, Crees, Odigie, ?
Wyndham - Renteria, Ayilara, ?

Gulls have lost Riggs (injured) & Enge to Casey

Always hard to keep female athlete engaged"
Amazing how a little cash does a great job of keeping 'Male players engaged' maybe try that approach for the female players and see what happens
Absolutely , amazing how clubs can find funding for men's teams yet expect the women to play for peanuts , then complain they can’t get good players

2020 rumours were that Louis Polk Hobba all retired from Casey

anonymous
Earlier this week
Well if Riggs out for season injured, Enge heading to Casey that really only leaves Standerfer and couple of solid players in Watt, Kaba and Dagostino.
Kaba was shopping himself around in offseason so doesn't seem to be really bought in there.
So I would drop Chelsea down a couple spots in predictions then

anonymous
Yesterday
If Hobba and Louis retired that is a big hit for Casey
A roster of Donlan, McInnes, Chapman, Parker, Taylor, Head, Inge is solid but no way an improvement as someone had mentioned earlier on here.
Riggs is huge for Chelsea (especially if Brasser gone) so lets hope he isn't injured for too long
