Breakers v Cats Apr 13

NBL action head to the Silverdome, in Launceston. Is that Boags country? I guess the Breakers would be hoping for Speights country. Put three gold stars it and they could be home.

Perth went to Adelaide and went to the Dangerzone. Maybe they got their bad game out of their system, or maybe they might cascade with a few losses if the tape gets studied hard. Maybe their Egos were Writing Checks their Bodies Can't Cash.

Melbourne had their brown jocks on and despite a superb effort from Funn Delany, triumphed over the Breakers after a second half fade away from the boys with the pink trim.

I actually think the Breakers will put up a good fight tonight. You would expect Iverson v Mooney might be a good start, and Cotton was spun up tightly by Adelaide, so who will get the run on him?

Perf with a little too much to lose should not drop two games in a row

Abercrombie was shooting well until he's come up to Penney’s record and go cold since. He’s also playing heavy minutes often guarding the other teams best scorer and doing a more than reasonable job. That’s probably the likely reason he’s not shooting well, 35mpg 18 games in + bubble + 34 + constant travel and there’s not much left in your legs. It makes you realise what a freak LBJ is.

With 2 seconds left in the 4th, firstly I thought Norton was very lucky to not be called for an USF. Swiped at the ball, missed it, and then just grabbed the body of WMW to get the whistle.
Then walk down to the other end for free throws. WMW makes the first to extend NZ's lead to 2, and I'm pretty sure he tried to miss the 2nd but it banked in. Likely game over if it doesn't.

Perthworld, no one is begrudging the Wildcats win. Cotton was amazing, Blanchfield had his moments and Gleeson coached well. This doesn't mean the refs made some poor decisions and the shot clock wasn’t a distraction the whole game. In fact, these issues take away from just what an epic game it was and how well the Wildcats played to steal it. We shouldn’t be talking about it but almost every game there are bad decisions or areas of the game that struggle to be above bush league. These aren’t contentious 50/50s or things that go wrong, it’s repeated, consistent and is a blight on a league that is otherwise improving fast.

Big dog that's a foul on Abercrombie. The shot clock was slow all night when perth was up 7 and Randolph hit the corner three it only lost like 2 seconds, I'd say that it evened out. I doubt it was a sellout and sounds like typical NBL spin. In Tasmania you can have 50% capacity up to 2K for indoor events. As the Silverdome capacity is 4,000 half of that would be a COVID-restricted sellout.

#842457 I agree with the overall issue you raise as the refs need to be fully professionalised as the standard at the moment is unacceptable. The actual forum-specific problem however is the intense focus on the calls that go the Wildcats way but not ones that favour their opponents. Imagine if the Mooney block "foul" was called on Iverson we would never hear the end of it.

Had to go through rewatch of that one:
1) reffing is just crap fullstop. It doesn't deliberately favor one team or another, it's just a lottery. I don't blame the refs, I blame the NBL for not supporting, training paying them enough (or whatever it is that causes this). It's the #1 blight on the game.

2) jesus - can someone just do some basic maintenance to make the stadium easier on the eye. Paint the rims, ensure theyre straight (they weren't always) and maybe give them a little softness.

3) NZ should've won. You can't give the Cats a sniff and when Cotton started beating Abercrombie regularly, no change was made. 36s showed how to do it.

4) not sure if the clock issues were technical or human but regularly both sides seemed to be getting an extra 2 or 3 seconds. Not acceptable. At one point one ref said they can't change the shot clock without affecting the game clock, hence the big delays.

"Agree with the 36ers comment but they couldn't collapse like that if perth didn't shoot abysmally from 3"

Interesting to note the difference in number of free throws for Perth that seem to have flowed from that fact:
- Perth hit 26/71 field goals against the 36ers and 26/70 against NZ
- Perth shot 8/35 three pointers against 36ers and 5/18 against NZ
- Perth shot 8/10 free throws against 36ers and 28/35 against NZ.

So Perth were able to get inside more often and take 2 point shots against NZ, but they missed them more often than against 36ers. However, presumably they were also fouled a lot more often as a consequence.

There were 23 fouls called in the 36ers game (total on both teams) and 49 in the NZ game.

Reading back over the thread and this comment really sticks out:

Looks like the 36ers have left the Wildcats mentally scarred.

Yeah okay.

I preferred this one...

"It'll be great to see the Breakers win this one to start the traditional midseason whinge Perth fans usually have and whether they need another import."

Although WMW did some good things at the end, he also committed some awful passing turnovers like throwing it to Delany who was looking away.

NZ snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Stick to stealing alcohol from venues NZ.

^ typical Australian response.

the players never stole anything, but you already knew that.

WMW was not good for 95% of the game, two massive turnovers and not much else. I'm still going to give him benefit of doubt and see how he goes from here, two outings isn’t enough but not a great start.

Breakers getting booed at their own "home game" - great form Tasmania.

Never mind the massive sacrifice everyone in this organisation has made this season. We're only ever there to make up the numbers. The NBL doesn’t care at all.

You were up 16.
Then All you had to do is miss a free throw.
Then All you had to do is foul in those final 2 seconds.
Then You let a guy who was 0-17 from 3 hit a 3.
You were up 5 in OT.

I'd say that is a candidate for booing.

Never mind the massive sacrifice everyone in this organisation has made this season.

You mean like Loe going home?

We're only ever there to make up the numbers. The NBL doesn't care at all.

Can you please offer some clarity on how you would have handled the 'situation'?

^ I don't know why I’m bothering because you’re obviously trolling...

These players have been living in hotels for months, in a different county, away from their families. They don’t even have a base. If any Australian team had to do that for a season in NZ they would struggle.

The NBL could at least have let the players go home at the soonest possible date, and not forced them to play the remaining games they had lined up in Tasmania.

You have heard of the world wide pandemic called COVID where international travel has been fairly restricted haven't you moron?

Trans Tasman bubble opens on the 19th April "you moron". Breakers first home game isn't until 20th May. They should not have been forced to stay in Australia awhile extra month.

I love how Australians simply refuse to acknowledge how hard this season has been for the breakers. If the shoe was on the other foot we'd never hear the end of it...

They are committed to 6 games in Launceston champ. Please keep up.

^ that was before the bubble announcement 'champ'. Things have changed and the NBL should have been more flexible.
