Perth v NZ Apr 18

The Breakers cracked the seal with a great win in Tassie earlier in the round, but will be tested to the max as they travel to the Principality of Westralia where Prince Mark rules. Thank goodness he doesn't have a helicopter ;)

Top of the table Perth have Melbourne breathing down their neck and is not a pleasant thing. Breakers have Cairns breathing down their necks too saying "here, take this wooden thing"

Perth shellaced them by 10 points last time in Perth, so should go in as favourites. Perth don't lose too often in Perth, but at least the Breakers can get a good feed of fish and chips at Hillarys

I would not be surprised to see the Breakers win this. The key thing for them there is how does WMW contain Blanchfield low and how do they keep Cotton from getting into the paint at will. However, if those two things still happen, but the Breakers shoot from 3 like then did against Brisbane, Perth won't win. It should be a great game.

"Is Perth in a slump?" = Is Cotton in a slump? Think that he has been. Not out of it yet but close!

Without checking the stats, the impression I get is that Perth great at beating who they need to, but lower-placed teams (sometimes) cause the upset. And there is little doubt that NZ are rapidly improving which, IMO, makes your comment, "Perth shellac(k)ed them by 10 points last time in Perth", almost meaningless as NZ were in all sorts of trouble earlier this season. Injuries to key players, Patterson, and away from home, while Perth were healthy with no issues at all.

In spite of that, Perth (Cotton) will be back on song for this one and if even I recognise that NZ are now a threat, Trev will have worked that out too!

Perth, in a close one, and high-scoring, I predict.

That was not a normal screen. Wagstaff had perfect position and then unnecessarily dropped his left shoulder. If you think that's a normal screen then you’re wearing Wildcats rose tinted glasses. FWIW, the game has been called reasonably well so far. Breakers won’t win without Loe, it’s too hard for Iverson to play heavy minutes and rotate on Cotton and Mooney. The only way Breakers win this is they get hot from 3.

There are question marks about Shamir, but it's actually twice he’s out coached someone this year. The other was Henry, but that’s not hard. Gleeson one time out was telling them to get two stops in a row, but nothing about how. The Breakers were repeatedly running a simple set for Randolph where he came off a Delany down screen into an Iverson handoff. Gleeson didn’t counter this at all and it was only until very late did they try to double Randolph. But Randolph was a great passer, setting up Delany and Webster for 3s. Another example was that last game Perth got back into it by attacking the basket, but it was mostly Cotton and Blanchfield. Tonight it was Norton thinking he was Homicide and there was never a change to help focus the offence. As good as Abercrombie is defensively, he does not have the foot speed to keep up with Cotton but the Wildcats spacing made it easy for the Breakers to help and switch. Even on the Abercrombie steal Steindl was wasting space. I was going to end there, but why didn’t Perth continue with the 2-man game between Cotton and Mooney that the Breakers couldn’t defend in the first half?

Gleeson out coached. Shamir underrated. bigdog, you also said the Breakers imports are worse than nz nbl. Randolph > Hopson.

There was still home cooking...? I'd say NZ well and truly had the cooking tonight. This perth no injury crap is boring, they lost their starting centre to an Achilles before the season even started. Please tell me how Majok would not have helped on the boards tonight???

This Gleeson out coached crap, if Cotton gets the calls Randolph had its game over, Perth wins this from the line. Randolph making that fateful Italian dive in the world cup a few ago look like a genuine play such was his acting and the refs, well not wanting a repeat of the Forde experience called it.

I get this is the wrong place and everuone on here loves a Perth loss but, that game was largely decided by some really shithouse calls, credit Perth for having a chance to win it, i mean just look at the free throw count

It was three stops in a row, it's one of their main defensive goals (as it is for many teams) and the players are very well prepared to know how.

Gleeson was slow to get disruptive when NZ's offence was clicking, but to suggest his team doesn't understand what he wants out of time-outs isn't accurate.

"Gleeson was slow to get disruptive when NZ's offence was clicking, but to suggest his team doesn't understand what he wants out of time-outs isn't accurate"

So what was his plan to disrupt them?

I didn't mean that no one knows what he means. Of course they do, they all speak English. But other than playing harder, trying harder, but did Gleeson offer them technically to disrupt what the Breakers were trying to achieve? Given the Breakers were running the same play repeatedly, should they have switched? Could they have started in a zone then switched to man? Could they have changed the rotation so they ended up with the right player on Randolph later in the shot clock? Should Travers be matching up on what looks like an elite import who is shooting the lights out?

Offensively, what was their plan to try something different? Run Flex again a 100 times? Run a double down screen for Steindl to jack something up only to get blocked by Bach the 3rd time they run it? It was predictable.

bigdog likes to complain about Shamir's very European ball screen offence, but Gleeson's offence is very predictable and easy to counter when Cotton isn't lighting it up.

There are done quality imports in the nznbl this year. One of them, Armoni Brooks got called up to the Rockets as he was boarding the plane to the Auckland Huskies. He led the G league in 3 points.

I have not studied Gleeson, but even with Cotton, he wrings a lot out if that team. Purf over achieve on paper. Mind you, home cooking influences that a lot.

Anyway, sounds as though purf were slow to react to Breakers running the same thing over and over. I can understand purf fans being annoyed at that.

He was though. It was pretty obvious.
Never thought I would see one eyed Gleeson fanbois rushing to defend his honour like this lol.
He was beaten in his own building by an undermanned underdog opponent and it didn't need any of the breakers to do anything insane it was just an honest team win against Perth and their refs and their overrated coach.

Apart from one fadeaway going to his right, Randolph didn't do anything spectacular. He just came off an on ball and hit midrange jumpers that were open on the Perth drop coverage and then he went to the rack on the switch. The reason he was so efficient was because it was so easy!

#601, I don't support Perth, I’m actually hoping anyone but Perth this season, but I certainly are not underestimating the coaching ability of Gleeson and his to many championships compared to you, some no body on an internet site. Go back to marbles, it’s probably more your game.

Randolph was also 1/4 from deep. He didn't shoot the shit out of like some players in the NBL do when they get hot and there have been some players who have been unguardable like that at times this season. Randolph’s effort was a great game, but it wasn’t unguardable.

Are you thick? No one is saying Gleeson is a bad coach or that he is overrated. He had a bad game and got out coached. It happens, just like players have off nights so do coaches. Rewatch the tape and watch the interaction between Gleeson and Shamir at the end; Gleeson was pissed because he got owned by an inferior coach. It will be interesting to see how he and Perth bounce back.

And now you're a mind reader.

You clearly read body language just as poorly as you read basketball systems. The Wildcats might have great fans but with local knowledge like yours it's unsurprising you end up with locals that play defence like Johnson and Pinder.
