NBL 1 Central Rounds 3 and 4 Preview

Round 3

Forestville Vs North

Forestville came up short against Norwood last week on top of a huge game by Turnage dropping 37. Harris top scored again for the Eagles with 35 and got good support from Mays and Rios, but Brine went missing.
North sitting on bottom of ladder waiting for 36ers to finish and get McVeigh and Dech into the line-up as soon as possible. Things got ugly in the second half against Woodville, getting outscored 50-27. Cant see an upset here unless Harris does an ankle in the warmups, Forestville for an easy win.

West Vs Norwood
As mentioned, Norwood got a huge win last week against one of the favourites in Forestville. Just watching parts of the game, Turnage was unstoppable against a very good Eagles frontline. Was ably support by Lycett and Daniel Webber and Barei off the bench. West had a disappointing loss in opening round against Centrals and looked like they were destined for another one, trailing in the last, but ran away with it with a 33-15 last quarter run, Akok Machar dropping 16 off the bench. Will be interesting to see Turnage Vs Ross if they matchup, and also to see if West show any of the desperation they showed in 4th, or the previous lacklustre effort they have shown in previous 7 quarters of season. Going to go with a West upset.

South Vs Southern
Plenty of talk about skirmish last week with Starling, so will leave that, but South made easy work of probable wooden spoon Mavericks. Southern started off well but massive choke job in last, or could have been sign of fatigue with starters playing a tonne of minutes. South to have too much experience and talent but may be closer than expected.

Sturt Vs Eastern
Sturt had an even spread of scorers against Centrals last week, biggest story out of Mt Barker was the rumble at the mount. Sturt should cruise to an easy win.

Woodville Vs Centrals
Woodville in a position that they haven't been in years, a contender. Centrals relying on Lual Diing too much, if he doesn't drop 30, the Lions are in trouble. Young Magok Manyang the only other real contributor against the Sabres with Clausen a shell of self. Woodville have a tonne of weapons, both outside and inside, Stanbridge should feast inside the paint. Woodville by a lot, don't think Whitmore will take the foot off the gas in this one.

Round 4
Rather than repeat above summaries, with a very quick turnaround with the Anzac day clash I'll just pick winners with minor comments

Eastern Vs Southern
Unless Southern get lost going to Mt Barker, Southern to get win.

Forestville Vs Centrals
Forestville with a percentage boost.

North Vs West
Going for West, but could be case of whoever is interested in basketballing will get win here, North hoping to get at least 1 win before their stars suit up.

Norwood Vs South
Match of the round. Starling will have to play some vintage defence on Turnage but I'll go for the Flames in this one.

Sturt Vs Woodville
Should be a high scoring affair, Woodville having the advantage with their bigs but will be chasing Sturts guards around all night and if they all get hot could cause a boil over. But will take the safe bet with Woodville.

Now that's a write up...really good! Is Starling playing tonight is the big question.

Ummm yeah great. Thanks for stating the obvious, and those one liners about GOTW really indepth.

Starling is free to play, why wouldn't he be playing?

#569, just spent 10 minutes typing that up, obviously didn't go into detail. Really liked your writeup, oh yeah, you didn't do one. Why don't you add onto it champ, with your in depth insights!!!

Great write up, good to have something to generate some interest and discussion. I have done them in the past but no time this week or last. Will hopefully again next week but great job by OP.

OP here. Enjoyed the writeups from previous years and week 1 this season, saw in round 1 write up it hadn't been done so whipped something together quickly. Haven't user the site before so had to use the app to get boxscores. Imo, at this stage of season you can't read too much into results until full teams are together with NBL guys, but it's good to get good input into season without too much bashing of clubs and players, then it descends into name calling and post gets shut down.
Been able to flick through some games and try and find the best one, was lucky to watch the last 5 minutes of West/Southern and see the comeback.
Would be great to have proper conversation on here and talk about players to watch. As I mentioned, Akok Machar stepped up big time as a rookie for West, going against bigger brother Machar and other brother Malith getting minutes for Forestville. Stories like that need to be highlighted instead of the usual Webber bashing and the ridiculous crap concerning Starling and Rigby Alphabet.
I'll see how I go tomorrow and try and get a women's preview done, or at least start one next week.

Not sure how you go with West to beat Norwood, but then back Norwood to beat a better team in South.

Hey, called it an upset. And South IMO aren't as good as people think till they get some depth when Sixers finish. And the big question for them is quality of coaching, not talent. But this is what it's supposed to do, create civil discussion.

Another younger brother of the machars is playing for woodville in their 18 1s right now as well. Pretty nuts basketball genetics

Basketball genetics, plus absolutely nuts about playing and training basketball. Norwood had the 3 younger brothers but politics moved them elsewhere. Akok dominated 16 2s but the div 1 coach never gave him a chance and said he wasn't talented enough to ever play Div 1.

Harris got good support from Rios last week???
Shit he must have been good in the 5 minutes he got on court. Wouldn't have played any more than that cause he's 36 and is at the end of his career.
At least that's what everyone was being led to believe, as justification for why Forestville needed him to be an unrestricted player.

Just went from boxscore, and according to that, Rios against Norwood played 36 minutes and scored 17 points. Where did you get your factual information???

Someone from the 9 club's not named Forestville will fill you in on what the previous post was referring to.

That is what was said at meeting of clubs talking bylaws. Basically he will be 7 or 8 man with minimum minutes. Then Forestville stepped up last week not allowing a new player for North to play even though there was conflicting legal opinions

Letting the CLubs in this State have any say is conter productive. Anyone who knows SA basketball politics knows this.

If only anyone at BSA had any idea.

Petty was absolutely woeful. Has he coached at any decent level previously? Just unbelievable decision making and looking puzzled most of the time.

I could be mistaken, but I am certain someone has mentioned the word "cheat" on this forum before.

I think you will find that they decided to stay with the existing live stats programme to minimize issues and training with the score table and the interface it with the NBL1 reporting system - lots of problems in accuracy of numbers and time delays. Difficult call as going with a completely new system may have also caused problems. Hopefully will be fixed in the next couple of rounds.

The scoretable people I spoke with in the preseason specifically said they were going with something different this year and this would explain why none of the NBL1 Central stats are available via FIBA Livestats.

177, are you saying that they're now intending to switch back to the old system?

Someone is reading these posts because the video is up now too...maybe they'll read that they shouldn't have put Woodville & Centrals on Saturday night and make them play Sunday as well. All other teams had 1 day of rest between games. Not an even playing field.

No one made them play Saturday. All clubs we're offered the option of moving to Friday night but either Woodville, Centrals or both declined to move.
