replacement is Robinson

shame they didn't pick Vaughns he would have been a better replacement positional and is starting to look very good in NBL1..

The Fiba power rankings are always very euro centric.

Its really a couple of tiers

1 USA - the best talent by far, can they play together?

2 France, Spain, Australia, Canada - Australia deepest squad since 2014 finalist team

3 Italy, Lithuania

and the rest

Argentina
Germany
Turkey
Puerto Rico
Guinea
NZ
China
Egypt
Phillipines

as always our problem will be lack of highly competitive games in our development program

As for the results of the tourament before the world cup started, they flew half way around the world, played the next day, and the follow 2 days.. not conducive to good results. Canada will be the game that matters we have lost to them at u17 the last 5 times!

Much better performance against Germany. Intensity was raised and there was much greater effort on the boards. Rotations were tweaked, which helped too.

Really liking Kuany's constant effort and intensity, and it was good to see Nyuon be aggressive and more effective in the second game after struggling a bit in the first. Beauchamp was clutch as usual.

should never coach an Australian team again, is it so difficult to find a coach who can actually coach a game.

#7 Kuany was an absolute liability. Cost Australia the game, should never have been on the court. Time and time again.

even playing 11 players in a must win game is just crazy.

on top of not calling a time out (or at least a sub), after the Italian 3 to advance the ball away from trouble or allow a moment to get the team better organised.

subbing in a 20% 3pt shooter who hadnt played much, and was leading the team in turnovers, on to jack up a 3 was another wtf moment.

the great coaches wouldnt have put #7 back in after he had failed and failed, they wouldnt have an 11 player rotation, and been in control of the game.

what a disgrace.

NCB is development coach, not in-game coach. Doesn't do any live game coaching at all and is given this role?

Maybe coach a Victorian 'rep' team in NBL1 (like COE) while still being High Performance Coach to get that skill. Hard to have exposure in high pressure situations if you don't do it regularly

DeepWombat - how long ago was that? 4 years? My point was that you should have regular in-game coaching experience to coach tournament play.

I think he's an excellent communicator and development coach, but he should be given opportunity to coach games - and do it similar to COE in NBL1

It's crazy that we have coaches coaching these national junior teams who don't actually coach during the year. Do the coaches have to come from the State junior pathways? It seems like they do. Would NBL/WNBL AC's not be interested or not be available maybe?

I dont think either assistant really has that much actual coaching experience, at least one got a free ride via his dad's previous roles. The player development roles are all about making everyone feel good about themselves.

Daniels was terrible at inbounding the ball in all situations, or maybe he was excellent at inbounding it after 4.5secs but before 5 secs. The baseline plays in particular offered absolutely nothing. There must have been someone better and more decisive at it, and having a quick mover like Daniels available to receive a pass.

Italy got back into the game with physicality and acting. The big italian centre landed two clean shots on Cotton. They should have been reviewed, or the coach should have gone off his chops at the refs about it. Nothing was said.

The subbing rotations in general, and then specifically in that last quarter were mindblowing poor.

The game coaching - Italian time out - for Aust - defensive rules - ok get a stop - they are likely to look for a 3 - if they score - what is going to happen??? what are we going to do, who is going to inbounds. - What happened they scored a 3 and complete chaos. The game was lost in that time out - the 5ft tall Italian coach set up a play for a shooter and then told his guys they needed to be aggressive on defence, get the ball back. The aussies had the wrong team on the floor, the didnt plan or they werent drilled and the coach didnt bail them out with a sub/to.

#7 lost them the game plan and simple, he is a high risk reward guy - block a shot - pass it out of bounds - block a shot - get lost on next defensive possession and give up 2 - but it was the coach who kept putting him back in.

Dash game away a terrible inbound pass to the italians - probably should have got an assist for it.

Even in OT, last minute they just needed a stop, and a guy goes for a gamble to try and steal the ball lead directly to a layup and game over. Not sure the player knew the time and situation and didnt seem like there was any direction to not foul/go for steal.

You don't have to be in regular coaching form to coach out a game like that, you need to have the ability to make the decisions immediately - that might be experience or it might just be natural ability. Standing out on court away from assistants also makes it difficult for the asst to suggest something.

Generally I thought the effort and energy, the body language, the presentation and defence of the team was good. I was thinking this team could make it through to the final.

A few of the players were very soft with the ball, and i partly blame Australian refs for calling the game so differently to FIBA/Euro games.

But in the end it was purely a coaching failure. Clearly he failed in the moment. Probably a great guy and great in his role at home.

You also have to prepare to be tough and only play 9-10 guys or less. Thus far this year I have seen Vic Metro lose games because they were trying to give everyone a run, not hurt anyone's feelings or expectations. The increase from 10 to 12 players on a team is a tough adjustment for some.

Hooping Vic Metro have to play the roster otherwise it looks odd that some still get selected without playing many minutes.

There in some that are just enjoying a ride in that team and selections have been curious for this group's journey since Under 16's. Some are "big names".

Coaches the same, is it who you know??

So much talent across Australia in that age group...missed opportunity, but when the pressure was on it went missing..

Just watched the team get thumped by Guinea. How many people even know exactly where that is without looking it up.

No Cotton. No shooters, no rebounders.

The coach even let #7 pass the ball in late in the game. He passed it to the Guniea team twice, he was the guy who gave the ball away and cost them the round of 16 game. A coach with at least something between the ears would say you are never to pass the ball in again. #7 be lucky to guard a statue in man or even zone he breaks down and creates easy looks for the opposition. When subbed out he wouldnt even give a high 5 to his team mates. Crazy selections. Surprised that the covid lockdown kids in Victoria are the ones who come through to make the national team.

Playing off for 15th / 16th now. Last or 2nd last. NZ playing in the semi final.

Here we go with all the keyboard warriors.. this is good for Aus. Maybe we can come back down to earth with our superiority complex. Let's be real.. the revolving doors of coaches, thinking we can have a couple of camps and go win worlds.. those days are over.

People come on here bad mouthing coaches and player selection .. you couldn't even sniff these coaches socks .the racial overtones and neanderthal way of thinking about other smaller countries as if they play on dirt courts and can't afford basketballs ..hello that's not what basketball is in the world anymore . Just look at the NBA draft..

How about we stop attacking people and start talking about the basketball. What tactics did they need to deploy. What worked what didn't.

GUI. Looked stronger, faster and more athletic. We can no longer think we can press our way to victory. These athletes and coaches need more resources to prepare these teams for world competition if we really want to win. Otherwise it is what it is, they are just a development tool for our best selected players. So then is the real test of our success in these worlds depend on the future of these athletes? If they win a gold for Aus in 12 to 16 years will we look back on this experience as a positive?
