Fellas Douse Flames

Another great game by the Fellas, downing Sydney by about 15 (sorry, dont have actual score)

Summerton and Phillips were best for Adelaide, Fallon and Porter, before being ejected best for Sydney.

Porter who had been allowed to get away with elbows, clearly visible moving screens and all sorts of off the ball play that would make Paul Rees envious, came in after a small scuffle between Jenni Screen and Snell, and pushed Screen to the floor.

Alleged referee Benn MacDonald threw an unsportsmanlike on her, but even more alleged referee Carolyn Tsakalos over rode that and sent Porter for an early shower.

Considering there were about 4 minutes left to play in the game, this was the first time all game either grey shirted runner seemed to show like they knew what they were meant to be doing out there. Both coaches and all players clearly bemused by the lack of obvious calls, and the calling of some contact that must have been made in a game 3 weeks ago, because it wasn't happening on the court at the time.

Generally a good game, certainly one to keep the Flames/Fellas rivalry burning strongly.

I think it is about time that people start looking at how the Fellas players in the Opals squad will perform internationally.
If Screen and Phillips, inparticular, fake contact overseas, they will not survive long on the international scene.
They need to learn to take the contact instead of trying to con a foul out of the official.
GROW UP AND PLAY HARD BASKETBALL!!!!

screen was hardly faking the roll on the ground wrestle between her and snell prior to porters push / disqualification call.

poster continually whacked erin around the chops as she cut or moved around her

brick on phillips said it all - no match up at all - erin's 1st quarter was great - sliding points in from all angles

jennis defense on the post players was great - evry time they faked and rolled - she was ringht in their drive lane

sam woosnam got her best minutes - but looks the most unfit of the team (understandably)

good to see the rookies get on at last

trish fallon was ice cold - cool as you like - slotting shots only as an opals captain would

Anon 59547...I made the original post...and I did use to ref.....only social and I was a reasonable ref, not great.....but I could have done better.

Those 2 today had no control until they kicked out Porter, and made some absolutely baffling calls/no calls.

Benn Mac lacks credibility even at ABA level, so it is surprising to see him at WNBL. As for Tsakalos....well the least said there the better

Some serious concrete answers re Erin in 2006

Sun Lose Wyckoff To Expansion
Defensive specialist taken by Sky; Connecticut looks to add Phillips

The Connecticut Sun lost a core player Wednesday, but may gain a key acquisition in the process.

Forward Brooke Wyckoff, a three-year reserve who was one of the Sun's best defenders, was selected by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA expansion draft.

Connecticut protected six players and Wyckoff was not among them.

"We had a hard time with that," Sun coach Mike Thibault said. "We had to make some tough choices with some other things that will affect our future."

The future may include Erin Phillips, who Connecticut protected. The 20-year-old, 5-foot-7 point guard was a second-round draft pick last season, but didn't play because she was pressured by the Australian National team to stay with it.

"She has assured me that she will be here," Sun coach Mike Thibault said. "That was a major factor in doing what we did."

Phillips is currently playing with the Adelaide Fellas of the Women's National Basketball League of Australia. She was awarded the league's Player of the Month honors for October after averaging 14 points, 5.6 assists, 7.8 rebounds and 2.1 steals in eight games.

Phillips' overseas play was being noticed by other teams, which is why Connecticut opted to protect her. The team believes that she'll be a quality complement to starting point guard Lindsay Whalen. The Sun struggled during the 2005 WNBA Finals when Whalen was hobbled by injury and lost in four games to the Sacramento Monarchs.
