He lost his mind pushing that ref over. Frankly lucky not to get more than 5 games really.

If you look on the NBL page (link below) it appears that the sanction is not for the altercation with Michael Aylen, but with one of the other refs (sorry, don't know his name - haven't seen him in Cairns).
Grab a ref like that, you're gone...

What a joke, PJC gets 5 weeks!! Te Rangi(who started it all, gets a $1500.00 Fine) . The ref (the Wonderful Michael Aylen) grabbed PJC and and then the other ref stepped in to stop him getting to Te Rangi. The Refs caused the confrontation, they made first, second and third contact with PJC,and he gets Charged with touching the refs?? What a Farce. When was the last time a Ref got charged with touching a player.

Few things
PJC started it, not Te Rangi. Deng was tied up with Mooney and things would have cooled if PJC didnt come in trying to remonstrate with Deng.
The fact Te Rangi got assessed Medium impact is pretty funny for such a minor push.
If PJC wasnt carrying on like a crazy person then the refs wouldnt have needed to step in.
Seems to be a lot of overanalysing going on when its pretty clear there was one bloke carrying on like a halfwit and that was PJC.
Seems a fair enough call to me.

no. Te Rangi started it by pushing PJC over ( you noticed the third Ref grabbed Te Rangi and pulled him away, Notice he was not charged with contact with Ref) Refs have their own rules, they police their own mistakes, how many have ever been fined, or suspended or even slapped on the wrist for calls made with their blind eye or even just their biased eye.
Pretty easy to see week to week, game to game who is liked or disliked by the refs, majority have a chip on their shoulder and are happy to show it (knowing that little or nothing will be done) meanwhile players careers and income can be severely impacted by the quality of Reffing.

Havachat, I suggest you have a look again at the video of the incident where it is clear that PJC pushes Aylen with two hands to the chest to prevent Aylen stopping him from getting to Te Rangi.
In regards to Te Rangi, it is about time that it is an automaticatic 1 game suspension for being the third man in. A financial slap on the wrist obviously has had no deterent effect on players.

Terangi came in from the side and hit, pushing PJC. I think they had to make some sort of stand, you can't have refs being touched, grabbed like that. It is strange imo though that the instigator in both here and the United instances just get fines, that’s not stopping the next third man in. Breakers should release him as they are in the spoon race, it’s pointless to have him hanging around. Such a great player, wasted at the breakers after how they behaved with their roster. It’s a shame as he’s a fantastic player but unless he’s getting massive coin I don’t see him returning.

PJC definitely started it, he lost control and I'm glad the tribunal finally showed some balls. Classification of Te Rangi as medium impact was over the top, possibly because the NBL wanted him to have a bigger sanction for escalating it.

Domestic / local league would have been 52 weeks plus.

Te rangi was not third man PJC was. Yes he gave hard push but PJC was acting like a lunatic a very bad reaction.

Anyone who thinks Te Rangi was 3rd man in either hasnt seen it or is blind.
PJC was 3rd man in. Te Rangi 4th.
Te Rangi's push has no malice in it either. If he really wanted to he could have completely flattened him. He's pushing an angry midget away from his teammate.

Probably got off light if anything, shouldn't be touching a ref.
I don't think PJC comes back which is a huge shame such an awesome talent loss for the NBL but regardless of the poor situation the ownership gives you, no excuse to shove the ref don't need that in our league.

So my view is that the ref's should not intervene if this is what happens to a player when they're grabbed by the ref.
They should let it play out & maybe he could've elbowed Terangi in the head & got a $1500 fine.

What a joke.
Harrell got a slap on the wrist for aggression and physical altercation with a fan, and punching Ili in the jaw, and PJC gets way more for this
Absolute joke and proves exactly what I said a month ago- Harrell was a protected species and others would've got more.
The contact with the ref was non- existent, he was getting himself away from the situation rather than pushing the ref anywhere. 1 game Max, if anything. What Harrell did was much, much worse.
Joke. NZ should appeal and NZ fans have a right to be annoyed.
LV

"Shouldn't be touching a ref"
"No excuse to shove the ref"
"He lost control"
He didn't really lose control though.
I can't agree with these interpretations.
Ref removed him from the situation.
PJC then (relatively softly) removed himself from the refs clasp and walked away to allow himself to calm down.
Whereas, Davis and Harrell totally did lose control- with a fan- and lost control for a more extended period, with Davis being escorted out of the venue and Harrell physically restrained for longer than PJC Had to be
I know they aren't identical situations but NBL set a precedent of light penalties for poor behaviour against non-participants/players, and PJCs punishment exceedingly harsh in that context.
Although, Harrell was a protected species, we all knew that. Harrell should've got 10 games. 36ers couldn't be doing worse without him anyway!
LV

And before anyone says it, no one's accused the ref of racism so there's a big difference
But still. I maintain the contact against the ref was minimal. The ref barely moved.
Yes there was an obvious pushing motion.
But with Harrell, everyone argued that although Harrell pushed in the fans direction, the contact was minimal or non existent
Does similar logic not apply here?

Hold on- I take those posts back.
Sorry- just watched YouTube clip which has a wider angle
The clip on NBL Facebook uses a narrow angle and you actually cannot see him push Aylen. It's completely like it didn't even happen. You don't even realise Aylens there. Watch it and you'll see what I mean. Press release doesn't mention ref by name either. Have to watch YouTube to see wide angle.
Actually you can see Aylen on FB but his head in bottom corner and very easy to miss
Ok, totally agree with 5 game suspension then. Lucky he didn't get more.
Still think Harrell is a tosser who got off lightly though!

Yeah you can definitely see Aylen on FB but they zoom in on PJC before the push.
YouTube much better footage.
Totally deserving.
NZs season screwed now.
Which is tough for them, when the Shamir era, all their injuries and travelling isn't that long ago. Had more injuries than most last season too. Now self sabotage by their superstar. Been a tough few years for NZ fans.
Although arguably ownership sabotaged them with Fall/Gillespie too. That's when things started falling apart.

People arguing refs shouldn't intervene, you all froth at NBA refs and this is the direction. Today’s Mavs v Suns, the refs were all up on the players. It’s what they are instructed to do. 5 is light

NZ's season goes further down the drain after such a promising start.

Interesting discussion, appprently we all watched different (same) videos of the incident and all have differing opionions.
one thing that does stand out is that the Refs did not eject anyone from the game (you would think assulting a ref would be worthy of an ejection) as they are happy to tech up players and coaches for just calling them names(poor misunderstood refs)
Again depends who and what team gets sanctions in this league. I suppose if you pay the bills you should have a say in who can do what.

PJC is in the tiff already and then Te Rangi comes in with the excessive push that earned the punishment that he got.
Then PJC beelines for Te Rangi as Aylen moves in to intervene on the tiff which results in PJC ramming through and pushing Aylen to the side.
Then the other ref grabs him and moves him away where PJC a little excessively shakes himself out of the umpires grasp.
Not really sure if the punishment is for both or either but I do wonder if we will see more ref contact with refs instilling themselves into the fights.
Depending on how you feel about that, I could see arguments to suggest anywhere between that being a heavy punishment to a very light punishment, or I suppose just right.
LV
Last year
Surely the punishment is mostly (if not entirely) for throwing Aylen out of the way.
Agree we'll see more of this if refs continue getting more physical.

Hang on - can't blame refs! the guy pushed a ref over in a fit of rage. He should not play again this season, if there was a sensible system and that’s being lenient. You need to protect the game - it gets played at so many levels and you just can’t have this as the example. A season, at least. Anything less is just commercial and below the standard we should be reaching for.
Dunkman

They have to start suspending third man in. Also the refs should keep right out of it, just start issuing techs, players will soon get control of themselves and those that will be on the sidelines.

Listening to the game, PJC was already wild if you pay attention to the commentary about the timeout. This situation was just fuel to the fire. He deserves the suspension, but management have a lot to own up to.

Absolutely refs should get physically involved and I'm 100% not blaming them but perhaps there's a nuanced adjustment that could be made.
