On The Sale of the Dpme Again!

Major rumour doing the rounds today is that Woodville will be priced out of the Dome by the Northeren owner and Big Mal.
Seems 'grass roots basketball'is a hindrance to the new owner and it will be interesting just what BasketballSA and the Government's slant on this will will be.I recall a lot of back slapping and the 'best thing for junior basketball' press about the sale.
If the stories are true about the 'no canteen for the club' and tripled court hire , it would put Woodville on the streets. Forget for one minute club rivalry because if this is fact, we all have been sold a crock of the proverbial.
Maybe someone closer to the action can bed this rumour or add to it.

What, so after years of having to pay next to nothing when BASA owned the Dome, your mad because now you actually have to pay a decent amount?

Who could blame Groves, he bought the Dome to make a profit and if that means charging a certain amount for use of the courts then so be it.

I was at the AGM today and sadly there are not many positives. Our committee have lots to work through, and after the Athol Park thing a few years ago, and now this ,the club could sure use a large slice of good luck.

And to twenty four, you should make the effort to get some facts re. the court hire charges before you shoot your mouth off. Woodville paid the same rate as other clubs in BASA controlled stadia pay.

24 - BASA forced WOodville to move out of a perfectly good Athol Parl stadium so BASA could have team playing at the Dome.

Of course there were going to be concessions for that, and now BSA should be coming good to rescue Woodville out of a very nasty situation (should the rumours be correct).

Groves isn't the owner of ABC EARNING centres for nothing...

If he can make a massive amount of money to the detriment of tiny children, why not do the same with Basketball clubs?!

Obviously Woodville expected their extremely generous concessions on Dome court hire to last forever...

The Athol Park thing was only a few years ago? When was it exactly? And just how long did you expect to get the free-ride that everyone knows you get despite your denials at the Dome?

It is exactly that type of thinking that has put BASA into receivers hands. That has m,eant that Clubs no longer have and voting power in the new BSA and that the dome was sold out from under us.

Other clubs don't get concessions from BASA. Norwood do not have a home stadium or canteen. Sturt did not have a stadium for a couple of years after the old one burnt down and again now without the floor in Pas. North and South only have 2 court stadiums.

Perhaps woodville should take the money they spend on their ABA team and rather than bring in imports spend their money on something like a coaching director to improve their numbers, they can then increase fee's. This way they can pay the court hire that other clubs, who only use their BASA staduim on Sunday morning for some trainings, pay.

Dome saga is a divide and conquer strategy.
Get a few clubs with a gripe against woodvile to bash it and take their eye of the ball while they're doing it.
Forget whether or not Woodville are screwed and ask if the strategy in place to lead us into the next 20 odd years is going to be the right one.
Netball thrives in SA because it has a spritual home at ETSA park where all district netball is played centrally.
Basketball on the other hand is diversley spread from Mt Barker, to Noralunga to Gawler and has no owned stadia where all clubs can sell their product.
It is more expensive than netball, less family friendly and is now at the mercy of private enterprise. An earlier post said the owners are in it for a buck and he's right. Basketball at junior level is lurching towards crisis with no strategic plans to carry it forward.
Juniors is more expensive than seniors and will soon enough, with petrol skyrocketting start to hurt parents and teens.
Unless BSA can get some forward thinking into centralization and stadium rationalization, our grass roots sport will diminish and become elitist because of costs which will see us further slip behind the other states.
Woodvilles plight is but the thin end of the sharp stick which soon enough will get stuck into all of us.

There is a perfectly good stadium (Rec ctr)that is under utilized on Woodville Rd, right in the heart of Woodville that IMO would be perfect for the Warriors.

Yes it needs a little work, but lets face it; The Dome has no atmosphere for a local club.

I recon now that the Dome is in private hands, BSA should ditch it as a local venue for all but grand finals.

Take Luck - I agree with you to a certain point. But unfortunately for all our clubs, we don't own the stadiums. It is theirs to do with as they will. Athol Park was an excellent venue for junior basketball and a great home for a couple of clubs.

BUT, again, Woodville should have been planning for the inevitable. They were not going to get the Dome concessions for ever. I applaud Woodville's juniors "cheap fees" mantra, but look on in amusement as they get imports on more than one occassion - yogee, they might not have had an import last season, but they have had at least 2 in the last few seasons, 2 more than many clubs. This money could have been spent in other ways that had a much longer term reward than one senior season. Provide better office facilities, which I've heard aren't the best at Woodville. A junior development officer to entice new youngsters to Woodville, providing more players, providing more fees. Or providing an avenue for the club to thrive in once the concessions at the Dome were lost.

I don't have a "gripe" against Woodville, I actually quite admire them and think their junior program is on the improve (particularly the girls) due to the hard work of many (Lyn Holland is a legend). And I certainly don't want to see them, or any other club, gone. But to suggest that anyone who doesn't "feel sorry" for your fight against "the corporate monster" has a gripe or lacks intelligence (100080) loses much support you may generate.

junior development officer what was the great KB doing for the past year or so, that was his position with the boys but as usual he lined his pockets and did little work
