Smith named WNBL Rnd 16 POTW

Sydney Uni Flames guard Deanna Smith has been named the Women's National Basketball League Player of the Week after her impressive Round 16 performance helped the Flames defeat the Logan Thunder on Friday night.

Earning the accolade for the second time in season 2009/10, Smith scored 27 points in the contest, connecting on 67 per cent of her field goal attempts and four of her five three point attempts.
Exemplifying her all round importance to the Flames’ victory, Smith also contributed nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.

The 179cm guard has been on an offensive tear of late and has averaged 22.4 points per game throughout the month of January, which is almost double her career average.

Smith helped ensure the Flames (15-5 record) held on to second place on the WNBL ladder for another week, one game clear of third placed Canberra (14-5 record).

The 2008/09 WNBL All Star first won the award in Round 11 of this season for her integral role in Sydney Uni’s victory against the Townsville Fire.

Sydney Uni Flames centre Suzy Batkovic-Brown was also in contention for this week’s award. Already a two-time recipient of the honour this season, Batkovic-Brown was narrowly edged by her Flames teammate after scoring 29 points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out six assists.
