Premier league update version 14.2

Though this will eventually be locked due to people writing a lot of defamatory comments, thought I'd give it another go.
Some big movements, past 2 Woolacott winners changing sides, Turnage to Norwood and Starling to South. McGriff returns to Woodville. Brine collecting tracksuits at Forestville now. A few other imports announced but to my knowledge none at North, West, Eastern, Central's and Sturt. McGee to Woodville a handy pickup based on summer performances. Plenty of coaching changes, Norwood, central's, southern and Sturt.
Any rumours of 6ers signings, McVeigh back to North or he heading home in offseason. BJ already signed elsewhere, North may need massive rebuild. Central's looking at losing Diing and Day which will really test depth plus West losing Kubank plus some bench players. Is there any confirmation or news about Thomas?
No use in asking people to behave in posts, just a matter of when not if.

If Sturt were chucking $$$ around surely they would buy some imports unless this year they've finally had enough and decide to do so. Would actually be a good time to with mt Gambier gone, southern a shell and north looking like they took a swing last year and struck out. Plus despite Turnage Norwood are even unbelievably even more lacking in depth. Forestville the only spenders again so this year would be a good opportunity to go for it. South might have opened the chequebook but have an idiot leading them.

Given the ruling by BSA allowing Forestville to treat Rios as not a restricted player I see the 2020 season being somewhat under-whelming for reasons given above. Only potential interest will be if South can get a third import to challenge Forestville

Whos going to challenge them on the court? North lose their lynchpin, south gains him but hes playing footy and a bad coach. Southern lost most of starters, if not them all actually. Norwood thinner than an anorexic on a diet with a rookie coach. Who else is their? Most have lost pieces, sturt may well be the big improver, calling it now.

I played against Holloway in Queensland a few years ago before he headed west. A scoring point guard with very good handles and has put up 5 solid seasons in the WA SBL as one of the better Aussie PG's in that league. He instantly starts for Southern alongside Humphries, and if they can pickup two good imports then they should be able to replicate their 14-6 record from 2019 which was good enough for 4th.

I certainly dont think it is a one person attack on Jamie. South Adelaide handed him the keys to the station wagon so those involved at board level are equally as clueless about what it takes to be a successful coach at this level. This coming season will be a massive test to see if he can coach with a $ team?
His mission statement to the club upon hiring him was development and promotion of South juniors into the PL team, 12 months later that has changed to the Southern Tigers playbook of hired guns at any cost.

No real junior development at Mavs has caused them grief now and will for a number of years. They have had some really good juniors that have made Aus squads but lost them all. The Mens program is just a wasteland for players from other clubs that cant make teams or have been moved on from their clubs for a variety of reasons and most that come to Mavs play purely for themselves.

It is a pity what has happened down at "tigerland"
The players and coaches haven't left due to a loyalty to money but to a loyalty to each other.

The clubs new president spent last season treating the men’s tigers program like a disrespectful joke.

Hence why NONE of the squad is returning! None of the coaches, none of the players and not even the manager.

The current PL coach is trying to recruit players from interstate to fill the void left and even trying with eligible U18s.

It is a shame how the committee and president at southern have acted in the past 12 months. This management has even lost some junior coaches and may even see the junior program go back to what it was 7 years ago.

IMO most problems at clubs are brought on by apathy of members, myself being a culprit. Never been to an AGM until a few years back and was really surprised by the lack of attendance. Again, imo, that's why clubs get complacent with same board members being elected by the same die hards that always attend. Yet members complain about club finances, coaches, seniors taking money from juniors or vice versa how can we get money out of juniors to prop up senior programs. If it was compulsory and candidates laid out their platform to be elected then the majority of the club can democratically elect who they think will do the best job. Then if they fail to deliver they get the chop.
Would be interesting to see if there are any records of voters against a list of total members at all clubs AGM. I would guess 5-10% and that's generous. But doubt there would be records based on current committee being glad to get in and not exposing lack of interest.

Issue at Southern was the previous committee failed to collect junior fees. Senior teams were run on sponsors who have now not renewed.

A fair amount of both for an extended period of time, then people had stopped playing and they couldn't be recouped.

That has nothing to do with the Senior programs or the staff, and everything to do with committee.

Whilst it’s not a bad thing for the change in leadership to try to get back into the black, sending the club backwards is not the way to do it imho.

Happens to some degree at all clubs. Many are now realising they need to collect fees up front, or enforcing no pay/no play cut offs.

I'm seriously interested to hear how the Club is better off now than 12 months ago. Apart from the changes to the Committee which were well overdue.

South have just welcomed their new import to town with the following on Facebook:

"South Adelaide Basketball Club are pleased to announce the signing of Tanner Giddings for the 2020 Premier League season.

Tanner is a versatile big who joins us after a successful stint in the Canadian NBL where his team competed in the playoffs, and has championship experience playing professionally in Denmark.

As you can see from the highlights package, Tanner brings size and athleticism and will be a lockdown defender along with Alex Starling in the frontcourt.

Welcome to Adelaide and the Panthers Tanner, the 2020 season is shaping up to be a big one

Tanner Highlights:

My question is how do South have all this money? They have never seemed to spend big before but with Johns, Starling and Giddings for this year they seem to be splashing it around. Have they always had this money? Is this going to send them down the toilet like Southern financially?

I would be thinking them and Forrestville would be favourites this year?

Southern Tigers with another signing this morning and the following on their Facebook page:

"PL SIGNING | We are excited to announce the signing of Viont'e Daniels for the upcoming 2020 Premier League season.

Import Viont'e Daniels comes to us following his graduation from Washington State University where he was a 2 year starter. He is a great 3pt shooter, a tenacious defender, and he prides himself on his playmaking. Playing in the Pac 12 conference he consistently guarded the best guard on the opposing team, which includes lots of future NBA players such as Lonzo Ball and Markelle Fultz.

He led the Pac 12 in assist/turnover ratio his senior year, and led the league in 3pt FG percentage at 45% the year before. Overall he is 3rd all time on Washington State University 3pt FG percentage at 42%.

He brings high offense, while also bringing tough defense. A team first guy, a humble person, and a coach on the floor for us.

#HearTheRoar
#ClubTeamPlayer"

I didn't think they had any money? Please someone elaborate on their finances.

This Vionte guy has played in the Pac 12 and started. He would have to be one of the best credentialed imports in the league. There's no way he is out here for peanuts.

As someone else mentioned surely now it has to be a case of the people still there being a bigger problem than those who aren’t. Or have they fallen into some cash no one knows about?

He will dominate at PL level. The problem is you have amateur PL coaches who have little to no insight on international game nor expertise to evaluate imports. Very high level imports out of college come much cheaper than people realise.

The issue could be with this guy if he has been oversold, gets out here and realises he is not playing in 15k seat facilities, with access to training courts, s and c coach etc etc etc. That can go pearshaped really quickly.

Humphries asked and got 10 grand, this import guard probably a bit less, WA guard around 4 grand, Koop the leftovers after post match meal. Women's import a package deal with coach husband, at least 10 grand between them. So about 25 to 30 grand on mens team, don't know who else they got for women. Compared to previous years probably a quarter of their budget, in terms of other clubs, about the middle of the pack.

But they are $100k in the red because of a failure to send out and receive fees.

Why would you spend money on seniors which loses money, especially with the sponsorship decrease, and get rid of junior management which makes money.

Classic Basketball SA thinking which leads to a loss in junior coaches and players over time.

Drmics 1st year was on 30k. Was set to sign at Norwood with KB but was offered that much and unless Norwood matched it he was a tiger. Might have been playing games to push up price, but potentially nbl starter could command that interstate. Humphries with no nibbles from nbl simply can't compete with that despite being a very good local and freeing up restricted spot. Plus he's from here and only moved interstate because of job, relocating not a big deal. Kid that Centrals have signed is in same boat, unlikely club paying his expenses, just looking for somewhere for him to live with local family.

West and Central's announced import each.
SIGNING | Welcome to the Bearcats Robert Sampson! Robert is a long, athletic forward who is a great rebounder and shot blocker. Offensively Robert can shoot, pass and dribble at a high level for someone 6'8 in stature.

Coach Corey Maclean had this to say about the new import: "What we really loved about Robert was his ability to play both inside and outside offensively. We see a great passer and a big that will stretch the floor with his playmaking and shooting abilities. We expect a double-double each game from Robert as he is an elite level rebounder on both ends of the floor. We can’t wait for Robert to touch down in late February and get started with our group."

The Central District Lions Men’s program would like to announce the signing of Spencer Williams for the 2020 season. Coming off his Senior year at Coe College averaging 12pts 8rbs and 1.5 blks per game, shooting the ball at 76% from the field and earning conference player of the week honors throughout the year. Spencer currently sits at number 7 all-time blocks at Coe College even though only having played there 3 out of 4 years and will provide a great interior presence and rim protection for the Lions this season. Spencer comes from the same college coach as former Lions player Chris Clausen along with a high praise for his physicality and work ethic and will bring a high level of toughness for the Lions this season. Welcome to the Pride Spencer!

And West's other one.

SIGNING | Welcome to the Bearcats Nate Sheppard! Nate is a 6'6 scorer who averaged 19pts per game in his senior year at Malone. Nate amassed an impressive 1,700pts over 117 college games.

Coach Corey Maclean has this to say about our newest import: 'At 6’6 we felt Nate could be a versatile scorer and have the ability to play multiple positions on the floor. Nate can shoot the ball, attack the rim as well as score from the post. Nate is showing us he understands the game at trainings by making the right plays on both sides of the ball. He has also shown that he wants the ball in his hands late in close scrimmages. We are excited to see what Nate can bring to our group."

"North still to announce the second import signing."

Drmic is their second restricted player.

Even North couldn't afford another import anyway given how much they're throwing at McVeigh and Drmic.

#125 clearly the idiot making the statement earlier that north were clear favourites. She then said "I'm now concerned ", sounds like the one and same.
What's their finals record the last few years, biggest choker since Michael Huchence! And add Drmic who shit himself in unloseable grand final a couple years back.

"Throwing money at Drmic and McVeigh"
I know that North got them for the same amount Norwood paid for Turnege alone.

So much BS. Only a handful of people would know a little bit of information and certainly not for each club

All I see is Norths roster starting to look strong and will be nice to see when done to see if they are mid pack or a contender

North would hope they're a contender given their spending.

On Norwood they are looking very strong. Another year of experience for the Webber's and they are cherry ripe to explode onto the NBL 1 scene.

I reckon Hawkes would agree that winning a final is more important than couch potato, pre-season predictions.

He has gone back go the state's many times in the years he has played in Australia.

I hear there has been some looking into a few players in the league regarding illegal activities and drug use all which are against their contracts and visa rules. One being at Norwood and I'm sure people can figure out where the others are. There's about to be a shake up at the top 4 clubs.

He overstated his VISA and has been refused entry back in. Norwood have decided to move on and not put anymore time into getting it all sorted.

Pray tell, who is looking into this alleged drug use, immigration? Rubbish.

Perhaps with NBL1, gambling and the need for all players to get an ASADA certificate for registration we can see some drug testing take place because where there is smoke there generally is fire.

Who are the four clubs. I am sure others as well.

Legan did not overstay his visa. He in fact spent most of his offseason taking Australian teenagers over to America and coaching them against high school clinics. Maybe we should ask the Webber's why he’s not back? Because the grapevine is saying that the president knocked his return back because his visa was taking to long to be organised

Seems poor planning by Norwood or it is a convenient excuse to upgrade their import spot.

The ASADA certificate is a new requirement

Someone has suggested to me that Legan was offered a non-NBL1 gig with Norwood to get help pushing the visa through. Is that incorrect?

Is Legan seeking permanent residency leading ultimately to citizenship like Starling?
