SEM signing Yanni Wetzell exercises Euro out

that didn't last long.

South East Melbourne Phoenix were informed overnight that Yanni Wetzell would be exercising his European out clause and he will now be released from his contract with the club.

"Although we are disappointed that Yanni will not be with us for next season we are happy for him personally and will continue to support his journey from afar," Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said.

“In our short history, the Phoenix have always prioritised player development and pathways and will continue to support players in furthering their careers.

Huge kick in the balls for SEM. To give a player an out clause this deep into the off-season is pretty irresponsible. Now all of the potential realistic big men options are off the table. They'll have to compete for the services of mediocre guys like Pledger, Ogilvy, Jois, Vukona, Andersen, Vodanovich, Tohi-Milner etc with the likes of Perth, Cairns, Melbourne, etc. I guess we know why the Breakers didn't sign him after he had trained with them earlier this summer.

The pay packet is more than likely triple or more. Take the money while it's available.

Why is it a dog move?

Both parties agreed to the terms.

Both know this is a possibility.

The player is allowed to choose what is best for them.

And it's better doing it very early on rather than preseason (Hugh Greenwood) or in the season (Perrin Burford).

Just three weeks after putting pen to paper with the Phoenix, Wetzell has exercised the Euro out-clause in his contract to sign with a team from the German BBL.

This is a definite bummer for South East Melbourne but it was always the risk in signing the talented Kiwi. Wetzell's a high-level talent so an out-clause like this (which, incidentally, was about to expire) was a non-negotiable for his management and with the 24-year-old possessing a European passport, a lucrative offer from that part of the world was always a possibility.

The Pretzel's not pulling a CJ stunt at least.

Santamaria:

For the Phoenix, his departure is definitely a disappointment. But with the start of NBL21 so far away - and with some key pieces still to be added – they have the ability to pivot out of this without too much trouble.

Will their direct replacement be as good as Wetzell? No, probably not. But, with the coin they'll save in the process, they’ll be able to throw some extra cash at the recruitment of their imports, sliding them into a slightly higher bracket for one or both of those guys. That’s definitely the silver lining for them here.

"is this embarrassing for Short & Greer?" No why should it be. Do they pick the players? Surely if you didn't have the EU out clause he wouldn't have signed in the 1st place.

Hear Yanni's off to Germany.

I wouldn't be surprised at a Mika Vukona signing actually, especially with the Flavell connection.

There is when he's past it. Those selecting him should know that too. I have admired Vulona for a long time and he is a shadow of his former self. Perhaps it's where he last played?
