Will Dave Daniels do men's and women's? Andy 2.0.

Will Rocko let a development focussed coach develop? Not in their DNA.

Will Cougars be back in finals for first time in forever? Money dial turning their way.

Will Mandurah and SWS even have teams in WSBL? Seriously.

Have heard Slammers are in major trouble to stay in the League, with BWA pulling most admin and financial support.
Brooke Malone and Emma Strelein to join Knowles at the Flames
Visiting teams to Kalgoorlie to have to negotiate the building site with stadium extension / redevelopment Works due to begin early 2021
Etteridge told his services are not required at Willetton after making a formal enquiry (Smart move by Willo really. If he couldn't get through a pre-season at EP then he definitely didn't deserve a gig at one of the more prouder clubs in this state!) Nener expected to be named new Men's Head Coach not long after applications formally close
John Triscari likely to be given Lightning women's gig
Conrad Francis linked as likely candidate to get the Senators Women as of 2021

Slammers are no longer viable, men or women. With the move to nbl1 maybe those in charge need to make some hard decisions but ones which will benefit the new League.

NBL1 West Southern Conference
Mandurah
Rockingham
Cockburn
Lakeside
Willetton
Goldfields
Kalamunda

NBL1 West Northern Conference
Geraldton
Joondalup
Warwick
Perth
Perry Lakes
Kalamunda

Play teams in your own Conf home and away.
Play all teams in other conference once, alternating each year as to where you play each respective team eg 2021 Buccs @ Mandurah, 2022 Magic @ Geraldton
East Perth

Two different questions...

Imports not in the State - almost certainly not going to be allowed. Imports from America will be difficult to get in with the (federal) border not likley to open before mid next year

Imports already here - Isenbarger etc. Probably will be allowed again...should they be? This year was the WCC and recognition in the structure it wasnt an even playing field. If the SBL structure returns the competion must be an even playing field IMO.

anyone know when the NBL1 agreement will be finalised, are clubs in agreeance?

If new format adopted, then definitely a more even playing field needs to be established to ensure the success of the new format

If not, then what will 2021 look like same format as WWC = more opportunities for development players but then possible inability to attract big players back to WA who will move on

Reply #819060 | Report this post

When has the league ever been a level-playing field?

This won't change now if we don't allow imports.

Leave it at 2

Reply #819062 | Report this post

koberulz

The West Coast Classic was a COVID thing, not a "there's no NBL1 agreement yet" thing. A normal SBL season was a week or two away from starting when things shut down. They had to go to a new format because they had less time in which to play the season, and because signing and recruiting imports on such short notice wasn't going to be viable.

Unless there's another outbreak, I can't imagine it won't be business as usual, whether that's SBL as in the past or whether it's NBL1.

Imports not in the State - almost certainly not going to be allowed. Imports from America will be difficult to get in with the (federal) border not likley to open before mid next year
Why would they be any harder to get in than imports in the NBL, which are clearly not a problem?

Reply #819064 | Report this post

Good point Kobe

Reply #819068 | Report this post

Kobe - It will be harder to get imports but maybe not impossible. For starters theres the $2500 hotel quarantine bill. Then theres the fact some americans wont want to play abroad in a league where the pay might not make up for the restrictionsthey'll face. Not to mention the uncertainty players have to weigh up coming out here for a league to possibly get shut down by another breakout at some point meaning they wont get paid

My point re; the normal structure resuming: if imports can play if they are within WA as per the WCC.. this creates a talent inequity as these players are obviously above the calibre of the average australian player on offer within the state. im not sure it would be fair to allow some teams access to this talent when the otheres dont have equal access (e.g. due to lack of talent or finances)

So what? You can understand something without necessarily being able to execute it. How many NBL games did Trevor Gleeson play? Rob Beveridge? Will Weaver? There's three of your top four for the Boomers job at the moment, zero professional basketball playing experience between them as far as I know. Phil Jackson made an NBA roster, but barely.

They're completely different skill sets.

I am glad someone has had the balls to call out iCollege. I had a son and two nephews be "awarded scholarships" by TM and promised the highest opportunities of elite coaches and college exposure tours to America and NZ. Each student had to pay $500 to apply for the scholarship then as was previously stated, after lots of false promises and shiny merchandise was promised, we rock up one week to a meeting to be told due to unforeseen circumstances that the college would be closing within the month. Stay away from TM and anything he does if you don't want to get ripped off, including his new venture The Farm Athletics I've been told about

the sbl has been an outlier in australia for far too long, hence why we were always left out and forgotten.

took too many years to change from 12 min to 10 min, 14 teams is too many and 26 games is too many. plus our finals format was dumb.

finally we are going to align with the eastern states and hopefully become relevant with national finals

SBL is never getting more NBL talent and even if there is... is that even good if it means devaluing the season and making it shorter? The aim of the SBL shouldnt be to attract more NBL players

What does Kal have to do with anything?

With Finals becoming sudden-death next year, rather than best-of-three, there would be no reason for clubs to have clashing games anymore (other than venue availability potentially, I guess). They always seemed in the past to try and have the men and women on different nights if they were at different venues on the one-game weekend, but it becomes unavoidable on the two-game weekend. That won't be an issue with sudden-death finals.
