R1: Sixers v Phoenix Jan 17

Sixers got off to a great start this season and were ahead at the half time break, but then the Suxers took over in the second half. That's taking nothing away from the Melbourne boys who played a clever game. Will they rise again? or will Phoenix send them 0-2 and instigate a Conner Henry YouTube classic?

This is the first time we see Phoenix this season and Mitch Creek often delivers a little more against his old team. Phoenix with a slight more stable team would have to go in as favourites today, but if the Sixers can contain themselves in the second half, improve their finish, there's no reason why they can't get up. Sadly, I think it may be the Phoenix rising from the Sixers ashes.

Phoenix by 6

Sixers to put on a better display today ( well they can't be worse).

Other than Sloan, all who hit the court for Adelaide were great, smart coaching to put Dillon and Teys on late, fresh legs and seasoned professionals. Sloan out for another 4 man . Well done Sixers. Coach was outstanding as well. I take back what I said of JVG the other night, he might not win this season but they look like a team.

Phoenix to little by to many, Glidion is a patchy shooter, adnam deserves more time on today's effort, though he does hit the floor a lot. Creek and Wetzel outstanding. Sykes will be fine, I think the rest have to lift or it’s a long season. Thought Mitchell over played his starters who weren’t performing other than Creek and Wetzell.

Outstanding game, I actually love watching the nbl ahead of the nba, it’s nice to see some defence and strategies.

Agree with the last Anon that DJ and Humphries coexisted well together. DJ did a decent job on Creek in stretches after he destroyed Pinder early on.

Having said that, although Creek is a tough cover for a big man in the NBL, the Phoenix are not a good team right now. The real test will be if DJ and Humphries can play big mins together against the elite teams.

Hoping they can, because Humphries looks like he could provide the kind of defensive presence this team has lacked basically since Rees retired!

Replace Sloan with Randle and they might be ok. It took DJ having a near perfect offensive game against a second year team to get a double overtime win. If DJ has a bad game 6ers are stuffed, no reliable second scorer.

Good game between two non playoff teams. Giddey will be a star and DJ is one. Dech and Humphries better today. Still not convinced we will win more than a handful of games. I'd be looking at at least one import move, just not sure who to replace. Pity Newbill wasn’t available he’d be an upgrade on either. Sloan reminds me of Shannon Shorter but maybe worse.

Dillon always gets a bad rap but the guy can genuinely play when given the minutes. He scored double figures in the pre-season game against Utah last year and he was putting up good numbers in a couple of games in Poland at the end of last season when Covid-19 shut everything down.

He's 34 this year but he's a more than handy veteran presence off the bench and I hope we keep him on next season.

Early impressions of the team so far:

DJ is on an absolute tear so far. 60 points with 10 missed field goals. Ridiculous. We know what we're getting from him on defence, his offense has made up for it.
Sloan suuuuucks. I remember him playing for the Pacers back in the day and he was one of those guys who is just sort of there. Nothing stands out about his game. Doesn't have a good first step, shot doesn't seem great, can't create room for himself, not much athleticism, defence suspect. Not sure what he's supposed to be able to do.
Crocker is a completely different player to what I thought we were getting. Thought he'd be a guy who can knock down outside shots and almost never goes inside. Obviously his shot isn't dropping at all, but he seems pretty capable off the dribble. Knows how to get himself open. Just needs to start hitting his shots (which has been pretty yikes so far). I think as the cheap import, we could do worse, once he gets comfortable.
Humphries was way better today, but the same issues were still there. There's just no finesse in his game. Touch around the basket very lacking, just kind of barrels towards the ring and throws the ball in the general area and hopes it either goes in, or he gets to miss 2 free throws. Rebounding is the big standout part of his game so far. Seems better than I thought from defence maybe?
Giddey is a massive positive. Rebounding, passing, the team just ticks better when he's running it. Can't shoot at all, though. Impressive start.
Pinder brings a lot of energy, but not a whole lot more. I don't like or dislike him so far. He's a nice energy big off the bench (although he's starting over Humphries so far).
Dech looked super lost and tentative on Friday but was much better today. There's a fair bit to work with there, but he's never going to be a go to scorer. Worth persisting with.
McVeigh seems to have been demoted to shooter off the bench, which isn't really his game, but he's doing OK so far.
Dillon gets to collect a paycheck for another year and do nothing.
Teys was only ever going to be a 'things are going shit, send Mr Solid out there'. We know what he can and can't do. I wanted him on the court over Sloan at the end, which is very telling.
Team wise, we really need to work on our PnR passing. We're either incredibly predictable, or our passing just sucks, because I can't remember us actually completing a PnR play in the 2 games. Not ideal that our 18 year old kid is far an away out most reliable guard. We don't seem to have a go to shooter. I'm assuming that's supposed to be Crocker and McVeigh, so hopefully shots start dropping. Defence needs improvement, but it's Adelaide, so we knew that.

No smart team would be frogmarching anyone to the airport unless they are a cancer. A replacement will have to spend two weeks in quarantine and then probably another month getting their legs back and getting up to speed.

By all means start making enquiries and even start arranging to get someone into the country, but Sloan is only just over two weeks out of quarantine, give him a bit more time.

Of all the new imports in the league, the only two I can think of who has made a genuine impact are Martin, who his was in very limited minutes, and Simon, who has been here for quite some time.

Great for Adelaide to get the win but for those getting carried away maybe calm the farm.
It was a double overtime against an opponent who in my opinion will struggle to get top 6 let alone top 4.

No Mudronja so far? No need to panic. I would say Conner is keeping his rotation short for now to try to play his imports into form and to get them used to their teammates. I think he only relented in 2OT and went with Teys and Dillon because he knew how important it was to get an early win on the board and he trusted the vets to make the right plays. It was a good call by the coach I think, but doesn't bode well for Sloan. Fingers crossed he can find his game soon, because it’ll be hard to get a great replacement on court in time to save the season.
