NBL1 West April

New month new thread

Five games in the men's with 40 plus point wins. Early season struggles with teams getting acclimated or will it be a season of the haves and have nots.

Hard to make sense of it all but last year’s grand finalists look like the teams to beat. Perry Lakes shooting a lot of jump shots. The Cougar family fell flat. Good to see the Wanneroo veterans side still having a run in Kalamunda. At least Mandurah and Bunbury have teams right. Nixy’s old boys putting the purple team to the sword.

Any other shining lights in R1?

It's gong to be haves vs have nots I would assert.

Already after week 1, we have a ladder of ;

1. Buccs
2. Redback
3. Giants
4. Senators
5. Hawks
6. Flames
7. Tigers
8. Wolves

9. Eagles
10. Suns
11. Lightning
12. Cougars
13. Magic
14. Slammers

Now obviously we're not going to have it in this exact order ... but is it beyond a stretch to say the top 8 is decided after round 1? If Cockburn is already having roster issues, the rest look to be the have nots.

Rockingham at home by the way, packed out, bordering on stranding room only. All corporate boxes bursting at the seams. They've got a formula right that's for sure.

NBL1 Women power Rankings

1. 0-1 Senators - Lost to Suns but were missing Barr and import Karly murphy and Phillips. Hoycard with a big 19 and 19 double double. Hawks this week a solid match up, when do the studs return.

2. 1-0 Wolves – Took a big scalp in Rocko with a 10 point win to open the season. Robbie Ryan exceptional post WNBL with 30p. The addition of Klastourney freeing Parker Williams into the wing spot. Miotti back is great to see. Eagles this week will be a good game.

3. 1-0 Magic – went to Kal and got a solid 21 point win on the road. Halleen turning back the clock landing 5 3's on her way to 17p. Still to add Kat Tudor to the group who is in town. Next up Slammers.

4. 1-0 Cougars – huge win over local rivals Willetton, a dominant 3rd quarter display lead by Jewel Williams and Steph Gorman land 12 from down town between them. Rocko coming up.

5. 0-2 Flames – not a good weekend for Rocko with two losses to Willetton and Wolves both top 4 teams of last season. Rocko yet to add Pangalos, Kracker and Samuels so not all doom and gloom. Import Centre to adjust to WA refs fouling out in both games. Cougars next, 0-3 is a big hole to get back into top 2 come end of season.

6. 1-1 Tigers – split the weekend with W over Rocko lead by 25 and 15 from Sharp and a huge 42p loss to Cougars ouch! A 30-4 3rd quarter will do it. Euro import big to join the team, Whitcomb to play a couple of early season games prior to WNBA. Also talk of a couple more additions. Lightning this week.

7. 1-1 Hawks – lost the season opener at home to east perth, the duo of Lubke (23p) and import Torresin (29p) proving too much. Team bounced back with a solid win over lakeside lead by Emma Clark with 28 and 18. Still to add Gilday to the team. Next up Senators.

8. 1-0 Suns - great early season win over the Premiers, Dyer leading the way with 23 points, No Roscoe yet as she finishes her euro stint. Import Chou looked decent. Redbacks this week good opportunity for back to back W’s.

9. 1-0 Eagles - Team on the rise, solid win over hawks in round one, the pairing of Lubke and import guard Torresin is a tough cover. Solid starting group just need depth. Is Kelly returning? Next up Wolves will be a good match up.

10. 0-1 Redbacks – Loss to Lighting round 1. Pirini back to her best with 19p. I expect an import to be added? Next up Suns.

11. 1-1 lightning – Good weekend for them splitting the double, a loss to Perry lakes and a good 6p win over Redbacks. Catie Jones in great form post Egypt stint with 28p and 18p. tough test coming up v Tigers.

12. 0-1 Giants - disappoint loss to magic round 1 at home, team at full strength with 6’4 Kehoe getting her first run. The team will get better, Berry is a dynamic Pg and is a great pick up. Big opportunity for a win next v Lightning.
13. Slammers – open up their season at home v magic this week. No money for imports, how long does this continue?

BWA laying the foundations of bringing Karratha into NBL1 West in 2025 by holding a regular season game there this weekend.

Good luck to all involved.. hope they paid Gero good money to lose one of their home games for the season which from all accounts are highly profitable from gate and bar takings.

Wow...fake news "West Whisperer". BWA took NBL1 to Esperance last year, pretty sure I've not seen you post rubbish about Esperance entering NBL1 in 2023/2024? Come on, there's enough muppets on these forums without this blatant rubbish as well. I'm also sure there's plenty of regional DLGSC $$ being thrown around to compensate both clubs. Good on BWA for taking NBL1 to the regions, this deserves credit rather than rubbish like you post.

Two factors to take into account when it comes to the possible addition of Karratha:
1) It costs the Buccs and Giants ballpark estimate between 250k - 300k each season taking into account travel costs, accommodation etc. Both clubs have been around long enough that this figure would be value for money given the amount of travel they do each season, with the Buccs even investing in their own team bus a few years ago to increase the player comfort levels. Saving a major partnership with Qantas or Virgin, one would then make the assumption that their costs each season would be around 350-400k. That's a heck of an investment from local businesses but that being said, alot of the states major mines are based in the Pilbara so it's not totally unachievable.
2) This however is the big case and is a two headed monster. The first ugly head is the simple fact that the financially weaker clubs in the league already struggle to make the Gero and Kal trips each season, with the Slammers, Magic, Suns and Eagles all being known to do 'flying' road trips to the two regional games, playing and then literally driving back to Perth straight after the game to save on accommodation costs. Asking those same clubs to now factor in return flights to Karratha for 30 odd people at around 600 per person if you're lucky, and there is 20k extra per season alot of those teams would rather spend on playing talent rather than travelling to the north west. The other even uglier head of this argument is that with the reduced amount of games, teams now already don't play each other twice and so some teams would not travel to Karratha meaning they are better off both financially and fatigue wise. The only counter to this would be BWA pushing for Albany to finally get the Raiders back up and sustainable, then having a north and south conference whereby you play everyone in your conference twice (H&A), and you play every team in the opposite conference once alternating each year as to whether it's home or away. For arguments sake it would look something like:
North: Karratha, Gero, Joondalup, Warwick, Perry Lakes, East Perth, Perth, Kalamunda
South: Willetton, Lakeside, Cockburn, Rockingham, Mandurah, South West, Goldfields, Albany
Could it work? Sure. Is it financially viable and sustainable? Probably not, especially in the South.

Back to the actual season itself and how many more losses before Knowles is replaced by Beveridge at Rockingham? Apparently they still have players still to come in but how far away are they? If you are 0-6; 1-7 by the time they get here, is it even worth it? They've attempted to purchase a championship with that lineup only having two locals and it's still blowing up in their face. When will teams learn develop your own kids and compliment them with Imports filling the gaps. People love to mock TT on here but he has done the complete opposite to your Rockingham and Joondalup's of just buying talent and getting shallow wins. He's developed a heap of local kids, then recruited well with Jewel and Jessie in leadership roles and is now reaping the benefits. Imagine if all clubs took that approach! An interesting couple of weeks coming up could very well see some hirings and firings I think

Ok so who has TT developed. From looking at the lineup he has, by the end of the season the starting 5 will be all non Cockburn. The bench will hardly play and the ones that do aren't even from Cockburn. Cmon, stop preaching developing the young ones when they don’t play. The "local" kids may not be bought but they aren’t from Cockburn either.

Race for the bottom: women's edition.

Slammers have to have sewn it up already given the team they fielded. If average kids are getting big minutes, you know your club is struggling.

Giants in the box seat for second spot. Turnour-McCarty looks good but Kehoe looks most likely to trip over her own feet and have a season ending injury.

Lakeside has 3 forwards listed on the roster. Jones looked reasonable against a lackluster Redbacks side. 3 forwards people.

Redbacks.... No chance of getting Parker Esary back is there? Is there a funding issue here?

Women's Division: Let's call it for what it is

Slammers: Need to be folded ASAP as things will only get worse down there. Cut your losses and focus on making the men more competitive. Ciabbatoni is just another temporary band-aid on a fatal wound.

Redbacks: A coach no-one with much skill aside from Pirini wants to play for, who gets roles with the Lynx purely because she works for BWA rather than having much coaching talent. Former junior Jakens leaving proves this and should have sent alarm bells to the Redbacks board, instead they did nothing but watch and will pay for it in the long term.

Giants: Clearly the folks up in Kalgoorlie have more dollars than sense, as they never learnt from their country cousins in Gero that it simply is not sustainable to have a women's team for the two major regional clubs. Lack of talent & resources along with the travel involved just don't make it appealing. Credit to them for trying but much like the Lady Buccs before them, it's a lost cause which is just going to end up costing them far more money than it's worth before the inevitability of the women's team folding.

Flames: Have put the cart before the horse this season in recruiting heavily yet sit well outside of finals contention early on with a winless record. The more worrying factor is only three local juniors in their team with one off to JuCo and not much playing time for the others. Knowles has taken one of the more powerful Women's programs in the state and replaced it with poor coaching, strong nepotism (HC and AC daughters both getting minutes ahead of others) and another season of mediocrity. Need to clean house sooner rather than later and get back to what made them successful only a few seasons ago which was developing from within and trusting their own to lead that program.

Magic: Ignoring the soap opera off the court, they've gone back to the early 2000s model of trying to buy success in the women's program and hoping the men can make do with the bare minimum again - losing to the Slammers a great example of this. Milo on her last playing legs, as would be Halleen & Boag in the not too distant future with not much in the way of young talent coming through at all. May have to seriously look at merging with the Slammers in the next five years if both programs don't figure out how to get their on court and off court affairs into order, and quickly.

AFAIK it's an NBL1 requirement to field both a men's team and a women's team. Goldfields and Gero were obviously grandfathered in, but I would assume that it was with the understanding that they would come into compliance within a given time frame.

WSBL Round 4 Power Rankings
1. Cougars 3-0 big win over Lakeside by 36. Continue to lead the league in scoring with Gorman, Edwards and Mortensen demolishing (83 Points) the small Lightning frontcourt. No one has touched them yet.

2. Wolves 3-0, pulled out a 10 point win on the road to a competitive Suns team, Morrell and Ryan 20 point each. The big 3 continue to dominate, word is a college returnee to join their bench soon. Slammers this week.

3. Tigers 3-1, 2-0 with Whitcomb in the lineup and she certainly dominated as expected, unfortunately that may be it as she leaves for the WNBA. What has equally been impressive is the form of Sharp. Tigers were challenged early by Hawks but a big 23-8 last quarter pushed the game out, Sharp 27, Whitcomb 35. Tiger Euro import big joining soon. Suns this week will be close.

4. Magic 2-0, lots of rumours down the freeway as apparently a rogue aircon operator lead to the court being slippery and the D league boys game stopped at ¾ time. Court was cleaned and warmups for the women completed. Referees decided court was too slippery to continue. Apparently Mandurah were good to go to play. Big scheduling ramifications by BWA to cancel the game. Magic have Hawks this week at HQ. Looking forward to seeing perhaps the two best defensive wings in the league in Toeana and Tudor go up against league MVP front runner Emma Clarke.

5. Suns 3-1 Suns are a breath of fresh air this year and playing great ball, still to add Sam Roscoe which must be very soon post Germany. A close loss to wolves last week with Natalie Chou a standout 24 points. Tigers this week.

6. Hawks 3-2 had to face the Whitcomb show last round then bounced back with a DOMINANT win over Redbacks, this game was over mid second quarter. Emma Clarke blistering with 34 points before ¾ time. Scary for the league is Nici Gilday is starting to find her feet. Hawks 5 games already in first 3 weeks of the season. Magic at home this week.

7. Senators 1-2, Defending champs have been quiet, a solid 20p wing against the Giants behind an even spread of scorers, Barr is back and will take some time to get back to her best. I haven't seen import Murphy yet. Bye this week.

8. Eagles 1-2, had an epic OT struggle in a loss to Rocko, had the game in hand for most of the second half until some full court defense brought rocko back into it. 4 starters were injured or fouled out going into OT. No lubke and import pg Bujniak looked good in her debut until an injury took her down. Lucky they didn’t have to play Sunday. Torresin continues to be one of the recruits of the year. Play Giants at home.

9. Giants 3-1, any win for them especially on the road is impressive, a 5 point victory over lakeside. NZ pg Berry continues to impress with 30 points. Kehoe starting to offensively contribute with 16. Next up Eagles.

10. Flames 1-3, Well an unimpressive OT win over a shorthanded East Perth. Burrows was very good with 22,8 and 8 and Samuels 33p should be enough to get wins. The team just can’t defend well enough yet. But they are on the board and should welome Kracker and Pangalos soon. Lighting at home.

11. Lightning 1-4, Team is just undersized and needs more out of there two imports (20p combined). If Catie Jones doesn’t have 25 they are not in the game. Long year but should get a couple more wins. Starting this week with Slammers then flames.

12. Redbacks 0-3, Were just plain bad against Hawks, not athletic and could not guard penetration, though most teams will have issues with the Emma Clarke show. Imports Payne and Daniels 6 points combined in this game. An import change may be needed and soon.

13. Slammers 0-2, this young group just need to find small victories and had lost 2 quarters to suns by 9 points. Better matchup v the struggling lightning this week.

Honorable mention to Lakeside women with a 6 point second quarter against Cockbum and Slammers with an always impressive 8 and 3 in secured and fourth respectively.

Serious question: If you can't score more than 2 or 3 points in 10 minutes of basketball are you actually playing basketball or are you just going for a jog?

S Grotham, you keyboard warrior champion. Goldfields Women have four teenagers as young as sixteen and have lost their import to an ACL prior to this weekend and then last night lost their starting point guard and leading scorer to a suspected torn Achilles. Show a little bit of compassion and empathy for a team who's season has effectively come to an end six games into their campaign.

@OZI - 100%. All the $$ in the world can buy you a roster, but at some stage they need to be coached. Head Coach is an average domestic coach, at best. Since Fordey won them a flag in 2014, they had Driscoll (sigh), they brought in Etto and booted him when he told the VP (now HC) his kids weren't good enough for nbl1 (spoiler alert - Etto knows a thing or 2), so a young Coburn was brought, so long as he toed the line, and booted when he didn't and now....well, VP is HC, President is Assistant and, as said earlier, all the $$ in the world can't plaster over poor coaching.

@Groote That's a vote of confidence in the program from you - 4ppg import and and import point guard down and the season is over. Are things so dire in the Goldfields that no women over 16 play the sport?

Injuries suck and I feel for any player trying to make their way and going down, especially far from home but how condescending are you?

Rocko, Wolfpack and Tigers are really humming along in the mens with their big budget teams - as would be expected.

Magic are really struggling which I didn't expect. Thought Mutley would have them clicking into gear by now. Defence seems to be the issue. Maybe if Byron spent more time defending his player on court and less time defending the ex-CEO and former President online would be a good start. Was never a defender in junior basketball and that has carried through to senior level. and that seems to be the issue with everyone in the starting line-up except Ray no defence.

East Perth men have an all star starting 5 but an inexperienced coach and can't close out games. Maybe he needs to inject his bench into the line-up earlier instead of relying on the same lot to get it all game long.

Suns look like they are building towards a play-off birth under a new coach and a good mix between old and youth players. Salinas to bring up the magical 500 games by seasons end if they can make the finals.

The interesting one for me is Lakeside. Haven't spent a lot on players but the church is spending $100k plus on a coach who is overseeing mens and women's programs. (That worked so well last time with DD - NOT. OK let's try it again *eyeroll*) Hayden Brown is quite a find. Clearing some budget space by moving long time staff members on has helped with recruitment. Mackenzie Sr. Still to rejoin line up once he returns from the states. Both lightning teams sitting outside the 8 at the moment mens team up and down game to game but womens team have no go to them and have struggled scoring except for Caity Jones. Ruby Ben (or Benn for those who know how to spell her name) having a great season at the defensive end - hustle++. Is AF the unofficial Purple Army GM . looks that way after bringing back his old mate Armour for another run in Purple.

Anyone know what's going on with the Wolves squad?

I see Jonathan Wade at the games on the sideline but I hear he needs shoulder surgery which would explain why he hasn't hit the court yet.

Also I see 6'10" Eddie Maslic on the sidelines. Is he also injured?

They announced the Greek 7'2" big man Ioannis Dimakopoulos but I haven't seen him anywhere.

Players from Europe coming in late isn't that unusual. Brcaninovic played her first game for Willetton this past weekend, Murphy hasn't suited up for Warwick yet, Roscoe hasn't suited up for Kalamunda yet...

Mens Power Rankings

1. Flames. 7-0. Cooking. Walker, Cooking.
2. Hawks. 6-1. Spurs of the NBL1 West. Lewis Thomas is Manu with that head of hair.
3. Tigers 5-1. Suprise packet for 2023 after a horrible season in 22. Outclassed Redbacks on the weekend with ease.
4. Buccaneers. 4-2. Meunier has been fantastic. Gattorna looks like slim shady and is anchoring the team. Stewart just consistently showing hes an all star in this league.
5. Senators. 3-2. Got over a revitalised eagles by 4 with roberts back in the lineup. Looks like they are turning a corner with their 2023 roster.
6. Wolves 5-3. Whilst they got 2 wins on the weekend, the way they played was underwhelming. The roster they have they should be burying teams like East Perth and Goldfields. Appear to be really missing the energy Wade brings.
7. Cougars.1-5. Chalked up their first win of the season against a Lakeside team with a pretty decent roster together. Condolences to Coop and his family, great to see the boys pull together a win in what is no doubt an emotional time for the cougars.

Its hard from here to rank the remaining teams who for to most parts non-events on the weekend. but for the sake of completion:

8. Perth Redbacks. With the roster these guys have to not be even in the mix in this game is concerning.
9. Lightning. Great roster, big money coach, losing to a winless Cougars. Ouch.
10. Eagles. Although still winless they at least took it up to their opponents and made games of it. Hawks and Tigers would best not be underestimating them next week.
11. Goldfields. belted by Flames and fell to an erratic wolves who are not in any real form
12. Suns. belted by Buccs
13. Magic. At least cracked 81 points against redbacks
14. Slammers. No contest this week.

Walker scored 51 tonight.

Mandurah very competitive until halfway through the second quarter and the Flames looked beat up.

Justin Beard still out, Nelson out, Jarvis heavily strapped leg, Callum Beard heavily strapped shoulder.

Walker stole the magic's soul however

Mens Power Rankings - Round 6

1. Flames. 8-0. Unchanged. WALKER is a jedi.
2. Hawks. 8-1. Unchanged. Spurs. Handled Eagles with ease and took care of business against the Buccs in the back end of double header.
3. Wolves 7-3. Up 3 spots. 2 tough wins against an inform Tigers and a Cougars outfit playing with a renewed purpose. Dove is really starting to establish himself as an All-Star type player in this league.
4. Tigers 2-2. Down One. Lost by 1 to Wolves but backed up to take care of Eagles by 9. Wortho turning back the clock with a nice 1 handed dunk which did the rounds on social media.
5. Buccaneers. 5-3. Down One. Absolutely belted Mandurah who are in struggle town this year. Will take them a year or two to right the ship and get back on their feet. Buccs then went down to the Spurs on back end of the double. I think they really miss the perimeter shooting of Muo. They havent really replaced him from last year's roster.
6. Eastern Suns. 5-3. Up 6 Spots. Trahair and the boys must have taken offense at their previous power ranking and pulled out 2 solid wins this weekend beating Lakeside and Warwick. Nobody expected the Warwick victory and you would imagine the Lightning were planning this one to be a W in their season projections. Credit where its due. They are now in 7th position on the ladder.
7. Senators. 7-4. Drop 2 Spots. Chalked up the win against Slammers. No real contest. Disappointing to lose to Suns. This would have taken them off guard.
8. Perth Redbacks. 5-3. Unchanged. Winning on the road in Kalgoorlie is historically a big achievement, however with the current form of the Giants, not so much. Will need to beat a legit contender and prove they are top 5 material to move up in the rankings for me.
9. Cougars. 1-6. Down One spot. Cougars battled hard against the Wolves who are a legit contender but couldnt get across the line. Definitely playing better basketball of late. Can they dig themselves out of the 1-6 hole?
10. Lightning. 3-6. Down One spot. Mediocre in many areas. Continue their struggles to translate their top level roster to wins. Brown getting some nice highlights for his mixtape though.
11. Eagles. 0-8. Down One Spot. They would not have been expecting their record to be winless with the roster they have pulled together. Very rough entry to the NBL1 West for first time HC Filpo. You have to bet they will win some games sometime soon?
12. Goldfields. Down One spot. Mediocre performance at home against Redbacks. They have a very solid roster which isn't providing enough consistency through 4 quarters.
13. Magic. Unchanged. Belted by Buccs
14. Slammers. No contest this again.

So far they have played:
Perry Lakes
Joondalup
Rockingham
Kalgoorlie
Joondalup
Warwick
Perry Lakes
Willetton

They have been improving, but they go through extended patches in games where teams just blow them out.

Still have faith they can go on a little bit of a win streak when they start playing some of a less good teams?

the Eagles play Slammers which is a walk up W and then play Giants at Herb Graham. You would expect them to get that one.
Tough ones after that against Cougars away and Redbacks away but then play Magic, Lightning and Magic again.

My call is they go 5 wins 2 losses in that stretch.
