I would like to confirm that despite how many times you'll hear the talking heads say it, absolutely not one person in QLD calls this game the 'Sunshine Stoush’. Ridiculous.

You could see that Baynes wanted a stoush by the way he walked off at half time. Good of him to highlight that they should have ejected him in the first place. Could've been avoided.

Baynes deserves a fine, terrible look by him.
The initial incident under the basket didn’t appear to have much in it.

Bizarre incident - elbow didn't look that bad to be honest to warrant such a reaction from Baynes and it wasn't exactly unprovoked. Baynes had the Cairns' player in a one arm bear hug. But that was a scary look in Baynes' eye.

Really enjoying Derek Rucker's work as a courtside commentator - very entertaining!

I can relate to Baynes in so far as the older you get and less able to play like you once did the angrier you tend to get over smaller things on the court, especially when you're not playing well. Took it to an extreme however.

Agree Rat.
Rucker has been keeping things fun.

Baynes clearly went into thug mode due to recieving 1/1000th of what he's dished out for years.
Might need a quiet talking to by ownership to try and cool his temper

I always remember at the Tokyo Olympics in the immediate aftermath of the Baynes incident in the locker room the talk was he intentionally head butted a wall and it was only the next day that the story became he slipped on the floor and hit his head.

I didn't see this incident but with his supposed massive over-reaction it perhaps gives credence to the original rumour out of Tokyo and also perhaps why Goorj didn't even include Baynes in the initial 18 man squad for the WC.

Per koberulz, I'm also asking if there was any further detailed explanation of the ejections. A whole lot of nothing being said which is strange.

Wild rumour Zodiac, hadn't heard that.

I thought more about Sobey's heroball antics to close out the game. Tbh Schueller is going to find the going difficult if he keeps playing a defensive-orientated lineup. In the closing moments when Tajere took a Sobey charge, on the court also were Harrison, Norton, McDaniel and Scott. For defensive purposes, pretty good. For offense, well there's only one dude who's taking the shot and everyone on Cairns knew who it was and played accordingly. Probably the easiest charge Tajere took in his life. The Bullets lack genuine offensive punch outside of Sobey and they're going to find themselves in similar late game situations moving forward unless Schueller can find a way to get alleged outside shooting import Chris Smith on the floor and involved more.

The whole Baynes thing was weird in the stuff being reported not being accurate. It was written that the incident happened at 3/4 time but he was still on the bench until late in the game and then headed in a few mins before it ended.

You don't get a spinal injury leaving you paralysed and having to re-learn to walk from a head butt.

Maybe last night's altercation, Mayen's elbow to Baynes' head/neck area was a flashback for Baynes and his injury in Tokyo.

If Sobey had passed the ball to Harrison under the bucket for an easy dunk instead of turning over with a dumb shot, it would have been smarter. Also McDaniel has been very good at both ends, yes Sobey got them back into it his iso ball also lost it.

Of course you can. Plenty of people end up fucked up from a hard hit to the head like a punch or a head hitting concrete.

Doesn't mean that's what actually happened though.

Baynes is not the big banger we knew. I would never call him washed up but I was disappointed with his reaction to what happened in game. He needs to play with the veteran smarts that he should have. I bet that half of the Cairns boys shit themselves when he snarled at them but he took it too far.

Brisbane should use the Baynes and Scott money next year for a superstar guard import at Adams/ Cotton level, play Harrison and Zikarsky at Centre and could be a contender.

For this season They're deep enough but lack star power and unlikely to make top 6

Watching the Baynes blow up clip again tonight maybe the strangest (or most telling) thing was that the Bullets coaching staff did not engage and try and calm Baynes or pull him away when he ran straight up to Mayen again heading into the tunnel. Maybe the coaching staff are intimidated by him also. Even when the ejections were announced to start the 3rd, Forde's instant reaction to signal to two of the staff to accompany Mayen is a star contrast to the Bullets handling of it IMO.

Did the Bullets coaches even notice? A lot of the time the coaches will stay back and talk briefly at the bench before joining the team in the locker rooms, they may have been entirely unaware having assumed Baynes had calmed down.

Watching the game live, I also found it odd that Baynes was allowed to carry on like a pork chop as both teams walked to the changerooms.

My first thought was "where are the refs?" but tbh this realm may not be heir responsibility.

Someone absolutely dropped the ball though. Nissan security? Bullets staff? Someone else??

From the NBL website:

The Hungry Jack's National Basketball League advises the Game Review Panel (GRP) has completed its assessment of Saturday night's Brisbane Bullets v Cairns Taipans game, and has handed down the following sanctions:

Bullets’ player Aron Baynes has been referred directly to a Single Member Tribunal.

The Tribunal will sit at 7pm AEDT on Thursday, October 12.

Taipans’ player Lat Mayen was charged with striking.

The incident has been assessed as a one-game suspension, reduced to a $1550 fine with an early guilty plea.

The panel deemed the incident as intentional, high contact and low impact.

Mayen has accepted an early guilty plea and is available to play in Cairns’ next NBL game on October 26 against Illawarra.

Taipans’ coach Adam Forde was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Brisbane Bullets were issued an official warning after Bullets’ Senior Basketball Advisor, Stu Lash, made public comments about Cairns Taipans' coach Adam Forde and the NBL’s ongoing investigation into the game.
