36ers awaiting replies

By Zac Milbank

ADELAIDE is still sweating on responses from free agents Brad Newley and Axel Dench after putting offers to the pair last week.

The NBL's 2005 Rookie of the Year, Newley's signature is the prime target of the Sixers, who are battling Melbourne for the ex-Forestville junior's services.
But Sixers operations manager Paul Bauer said the club would not rush the decision from 22-year-old Newley - whose main objective is to make it in the NBA. "We're just going to let it play out, we'll give them as much time as they need," Bauer said.

"But obviously we'll need an answer in the coming weeks."

Dench, released by the Tigers, had a lengthy chat with Sixers assistant coach Steve Breheny this week to find out what his role would be should he choose Adelaide as his destination.

Obviously the season ticket holders will be receiving our letters soon and they wanted to be able to say we have made an offer might get Newley. The reality is, with time running out and more quality players being signed elsewhere, we will be struggling to improve on last year's team.

What do you guys expect? That the 36ers should have a Championship team this season? Every club goes through bad patches and to turn it around in one year is not realistic. At least the 36ers seem to be more active than in previous years. As has been mentioned meny times on this forum, I am a 36ers supporter no matter what. And I won't write the team off before a ball has even been bounced for 07/08. Seriously, show some support for a club trying to rebuild under a new regime.

Latest info: Newley might be leaning towards Adelaide. Doesn't look like he'll be signing with Melbourne today.

JW, Spinner's post said that Adelaide would be struggling to improve last season's team. No one is expecting a championship, but improvement is expected after last season's sham of a campaign.

Maybe Newley has been promised that Smyth will only be there one more year?

Heres hoping we get Newley, if we sign Newley, Dench and a 2nd import along with Maher and Ballinger that puts us straight into title contention IMO. Even if we miss out on Newley and still get Dench who will start with Davidson, Maher, 2nd import and Ballinger that is an improvememnt on last seasons first 5 IMO (Davidson is better than Nash, Ballinger is better than Horvath and Dench would be an improvement on Wheeler) so we should be back in the play off hunt.
Heres hoping for some exciting times for the 36ers!!

Would someone like frankl drimic be a reasonable option at the 3 spot if he gets in shape? The key being him IN shape he has all the talent and skill just look at the old magic days and his 1997 WC campaign he can do it but will someone throw the man a lifeline and give him a contract pending on his fitness which was his problem last yrcould be an ideal fit at the 3 spot if hes fit

If we could sign Drmic cheaply i wouldnt mind having him, especially if he gets back into top shape, im pretty sure he was averaging around 17ppg 8rpg for the kings before he went to Europe. even if he is more like the dragons drmic if we can get him cheapley he would be ok as a back up forward. If he got into shape and we signed him even if we miss out on Newley we would have a good starting 5 with Drmic, Dench and a 2nd import being added to what we got, and if we got Newley and Drmic in top form we could go with a team of

C Import/Cooper
PF Ballinger/Dench
SF Drmic/Copeland
SG Newley/Ng
PG Maher/Davidson/Sutton (thats 11 players not sure if all would fit, id prob leave Copeland out if we only want 10 and Newley and Ballinger can spend some minutes in the SF) If Drmic is only good enough to be a back up id start dench and get a import 2/3 to go with Newley

We would have to get rid of Copeland to fit him in the Cap.

Take Drmic over Copeland.. he's not that great but at least he's not 41 years old!
