senior country carnival 08

popped in to see the senior country carnival on the weekend and was generally surprised at how good the standard was. Interested to see what others thought and to who they thought the standout players were.

McGinty for Mt Gambier was easily the most mobile big man at the carnival and appeared to have free range to do whatever he wanted. Brett Humphreys from Port Augusta was his usual consistent self. Pt Augusta also had a quick little blonde fella who had super quick hands.

Competition was pretty balanced in the men with little separating the top 5 teams. Port Augusta and Riverland had the best balance which explained why they made it to the final.

Only downer over the weekend were the conditions in the stadium on Saturday. It was like a sauna and made it tough on players.

In the women it was equally well balanced with 4 competitive teams. (Adel Plains won Div 2 and would've been competitive in Div 1)

Riverland and Eastern justifiably made the final which Eastern won reversing the result in the round robin comp. Very good game at a very high standard.

Stand outs were Tenille (Pitt) Searl, Leah Searl, and Tess from Riverland (Tournament MVP).

Riverland had more depth but Eastern had more experience. Riverland are a young team and if they can keep that nucleus together they will be a powerhouse in the future.
