Why are Dragons called "South"
Are they meant to be from southern melbourne or what? Does the "South" thing actually mean anything?

It's supposed to mean they are the most southern located team in the league. It was announced at the club launch.

Cos victoria had already been done, as had north mebourne, south east melbourne, eastside, st kilda, etc etc. I dunno why they dont just call emselves the melbourne city dragons or melbourne dragons or something.

Because Seamus wouldn't allow another team having "Melbourne" in their name.
He has done such a good job in marketing that brand, you see.

The Gaze era Tigers claimed the "Melbourne" as a trademark after the Giants/Magic days and basically refused to allow another NBL team to have Melbourne in it.
McPeake, of course, being the generous soul that he is, continued on the arrogance of it.

before I was "for" the Tigers doing the whole Melbourne trademark thing, now think of it we have LA Clippers and LA Lakers...Perhaps Lakers should have trademarked LA and made Clipper go Beverley Clippers or something...
Maybe 'Compton Clippers' would have a better ring to it
