Thoughts on U18 Nationals?

What are peoples thoughts on the performance of the guys teams at this years Nationals??

1st - Vic Metro guys were outstanding and were never seriously challenged due to the fact they defended the hell out of everyone!!

2nd - NSW Metro were very strong all week and Aldridge led them right throughout. Great effort, only losing to the champions.

3rd - Vic Country scored in bunches, led by outstanding Creek, just to small in almost every position!! Pretty good result when you consider they only lost to the two in the final and belted WA Metro, Tasmania and Queensland South.

Queensland South - Athletic street ball.
SA Metro - Seemed to never get it together.
NSW Country - Played hard, lacked polish.
WA Metro - Up and down play.
Tasmania - One really good inside player short.

There was a massive cloud over the SA group early in the week. They could have fell into a hole but finnished much stronger in 5th spot which is testimony to the coaching staff and players. Early in the week they seemed to lack movement off the ball and their gaurds seemed to wanted drive, head down into the tall timber.

NSW Metro guards couldnt match the size and strength of Vic.

There is big lack of guys that will be international 4/5 men going around and many guys that should be 2/3 men are filling the void. If I was at the upper end of the coaching echelon in Australia I would be concerned about this.

Vic Metro guards were too big and strong for the rest of the nation. They make the difference to that team.

Vic Country are my favourite group. They love playing for each other and bat above their class. Well coached well run group IMO.

QLD South were massive underachievers IMO. Some of those kids need to be taken down a peg or 2 and lets just say I think they were the antithesis to Vic Country.

Vic Country kids just enjoy playing the game and are very well coached. I felt the Vic Metro kids who have a good coach and run their offense very well, turned the heat up on the defensive end and took it it to a whole new level, considering they were not that good in 16's two years ago.

Aldridge very good, Creek the same, McCarron had a good week. Greenwood enjoyable to watch compete. Marriott, where to next for him ?

Great run tournament at a very good venue.

Some great games ... Final was a let down after serious good pool games.. VIC metro had the depth to keep the defence tight for the whole game..
Greenwood Aldridge and Creek were great indivual performances just a bit light on with support in their own teams , indication of the lack of strenghth of the game in TAS, and NSW..
AFL scouts are interested in all 3 and were at the tournament..
It is disappointing to see were BBall has ended up at NBL level yet there is deep pool of talent coming thru the juniors where do they go by sticking with Basketball or is AFL the better option...

The Vic Country kids did seem like they enjoyed playing for each other. Is this the same coach as last year?

VC had the same coach they had in 16s, Jamie Oloughlin. This coach must be something special, in last 5 years he has won;
2009 u/18 Bronze
2008 u/16 Gold
2007 u/16 Silver
2006 u/16 Bronze
2005 u/16 Gold
To medal 5 years in a row is no easy accomplishment. He is a young coach 2, how young im not sure but he definately appears young.

Jamie's from Geelong, assistant to their BIG V team I believe. He's a little arrogant, but the guy can seriously coach. He's had the benefit of coaching some pretty special kids at VICC.

Matt Dellavedova
Damon Byrne
Liam McIverney
Shaun Bruce

among others...

Close T-Dog. Jamie is the assistant coach for the Supercats. SEABL team.

And yes he has had some very good results.

Tassie were missing four starters from 16's two years ago. No depth to cover those. Schuller was walking and talking like a tool all week. He should support his adopted state not knock them all.

SA teams I guess would have been disappointed with their results by looks of it?

How about the girls, what did you think of them??
Vic Metro girls seemed to be a powerhouse that no team could get near and so much depth??

The girls were fantastic!! Go girls.

SAM Men Disappointing? Maybe, but we all know the odds where the Vics are concerned the population depth, money and sheer strength of the comp over there. The fact the Vics had a big scare last year meant they were always going to be fierce, but please could the armchair experts please take a fair suck of the lemon regarding the SAM boys and their coaches!!

The win against WA Metro in double overtime was huge. All credit to SAM for the guts and determination they displayed under pressure in that game and for the way they clawed themselves back to winning 5th after being jumped by the Vics and losing a couple more on the trot. Good on you boys for fighting back.

Of course nobody mentions any of the positives on here. Like that the Spehr kid was the fourth highest scorer in the comp (behind only Greenwood, Creek and Aldridge) with even higher assists and 3point stats or that he had Molloy chaffing at the bit in the Vic game. Or that all of the kids fought really hard-to-hurting right to the end, with some shining moments from them all and especially guys like Carlin, Sadauskas, Omamogobo, and Joshua Owen Thomas. This team were definitely playing more as a unit as the time went on. All credit to you SAM guys for fighting back! Well done Paul and the coaches!

These are the kids that try out for months to get a place, and then fight hard to do the state proud. Let's give them some encouragement rather than write it all off as "disappointing". And maybe spend more time on here finding ways to make the sport stronger, not weaker, in this state.

Nice one Pultney, Even the Country kids had some shining lights, and altho the results were perhaps not where they wanted, they still had kids playing some very good basketball against some of the best kids n the country at the time.

I think all 4 teams/coaches need a big pat on the back. ohh and the support people in the background that we all seem to forget every now and then....
