Las Vegas Summer League 2009 thread

I've added some quick links at the top of the forum for those interested in following the 2009 summer leagues. Las Vegas is the larger of the two and features a few Australians and ex-NBL imports. I've listed a few that I've come across but if you're aware of more, post them here.

Cross your fingers especially for our SA representatives, Luke, Joe and Brad - hopefully they get solid opportunities and do well.

(Swear Orien Greene was on a roster - can anyone find him? Or am I thinking of last year?)

(Mod: Adjusted date so more people see Hoop Addict's eyewitness reports from Vegas.)

Orien Greene was certainly on a roster last year. No idea about this year.

Many teams have announced their rosters independently of the actual summer league subsite.

In Vegas for WSOP, but since poker is all done with, I went to check out some Summer League action today.

Saw Ingles play vs the Pistons. Thought he did a real nice job on D, didn't get a ton of looks offensively. They have some talent though, with Curry, Morrow, Randolph all playing. Joe guarded Austin Daye for a lot of it & kept him well in check. Curry's shot is so quick, only needs half a second & it's money.

Lakers vs Clips wasn't a great game. Griffin was pretty ridiculous - impossible around the bucket & even hit a 3 ball. The only time he struggled was on the perimeter when he tried to penetrate, his handles aren't great. Eric Gordon was also a level above. Adam Morrison was tough for the Lakers & kept them close.

Also saw bits & pieces of Sac vs Mil. Tyreke Evans looked good. Good size & body type. Gets to the rim well. Can't shoot. Jennings gave him trouble when he pressed him up the floor but Evans posted him up with success a few times. Jennings was good, plays more D than I expected, and is actually a really good help defender. Controlled the ball well, made some nice passes. Also hit game clinching 3 ball.

Going again tomorrow for probably a full days worth of Summer League action!

One last one - thought Jonas Jerebko (Pistons 2nd round pick) was really good today. Was probably their best guy.

Yup, Draper isn't in the program, but was playing today. Didn't see much of the game since neither team really had anyone of interest playing outside of Ty Lawson, who I didn't hardly see.

Hodge was no where to be seen.

Joe was good again today. Got a LOT of playing time. Had more looks in today's game, which was good to see. Still looked very comfortable on court, defended well, passed well. Have been impressed. Curry was quiet, Randolph was a beast. Very tough to cover, especially as he was knocking down 15-18 footers as well. Also had one of the biggest crams I have ever seen at the very end of the 1st Q. Bulls 16th pick (James Johnson) looked decent as well. Solid build & could score inside & out.

Watched a bit of the Wizards game - Nick Young was really good. Really quick across the floor & got himself open off screens. Shot the ball super well.

Caught the 2nd half of Knicks vs Grizz. Thoroughly unimpressed by Thabeet. Expected him to be raw on offense, didn't expect him to allow Jordan Hill to score any time he wanted down the stretch. Marcus Williams was also good in the 4th, though he dominated the ball - seemed that was the only way the Grizz were likely to score, though.

Couldn't help but feel Tskitishvili would be a mediocre NBL import - big, clunky, immobile, has nothing close to a post game. He can shoot, but that's about it.

Had my 1st look at James Harden. Loooks pretty smooth - very, very athletic. Shot the ball well, had some nice slashes through traffic, wasn't awful on D. I like the look of both him & Ty Evans, though I still wonder how restricted Evans will be by his lack of an outside shot & the fact he's probably more suited to the 2 than the 1. So I still have my reservatoins on him, despite him being awesome y'day.

Was pretty sad to see Shaun Livingston struggling in this comp. Has no explosiveness, can't beat his man off the dribble, still does a few nice things & sees the game well but you can see his body just doesn't want to do what he wants it to do.

Had another look at Blake Griffin - wasn't a great game from him, he kind of floated in & out, but still ended up with mid-teens points & I'd guess at 10 boards & 4-5 assists. He's definitely a better passer than I thought he was.

Eric Gordon looks really good. Hard to guard on penetration & a good finisher around the rim, as well as having a nice stroke from distance (though he shot poorly today). I think he's pretty easily the best 2nd year guy here.

A pleasent surprise was DeAndre Jordan. After suffering through watching 7"+ guys (Sene, Thabeet, O'Bryant et al) absolutely stink all day, it was nice to see a big who is capable of catching the ball in the paint & finishing. He makes dunking look comical (as though he's playing on an 8" ring) since his arms are so long, but he's got a decently strong body & doesn't try to do anything he isn't capable of. Also above average defensively. Was very impressed.

Also saw Luke Nevill play today. Had a stinker. Looked like the rest of the 7" guys who can't play, except white. Didn't get many opportunities but got called for a few moving screens & a loose ball foul which was clumsy, then turned the ball over a couple of times.

On that note - saw Baynes y'day... didn't look too flash, either. Also gave the LAL coaching staff lip & generally had poor body language. Wasn't impressed.

Last day of Summer League for me tomorrow, will hopefully be there for all or at least most of the day again. Most looking forward to seeing Newley play vs Portland.

-'I had to send two packages back to Aus because I had no chance of fittig all my stuff in my bag!'

Nice work Hoop Addict, and I hope you have given the clubs in the MGM Grand a good work over!(if same clubs still open)

I just checked on nba.com and they did not have Hodge on the Bulls roster anymore, funny considering he was on the roster 10 hours earlier. Not happy, I was going to subscribe to the 'Summer League Live' just to watch him.

Thanks for the reports Hoops Addict - really interesting to hear. Look forward to your next one.

The news I am happiest about is Brandon Jennings. I thought the Bucks had flat out screwed themselves in the draft again with Jennings, but based on your comments and what I've seen of the highlights and box scores, I reckon they've found a guy with a lot of talent. Between him and Amir Johnson and Mbah a Moute, its nice to see the Bucks finally putting a few solid pieces in place around Bogut.

One more good offseason and the Bucks might finally turn the corner. If I were Skiles I'd be imploring Jennings not to take it to the basket too often though - the kid is so skinny I can see him getting badly injured like TJ Ford did a couple of years back!

Saw Jennings again today & was impressed again. Runs the high pick & roll well, doesn't look to force shots & is a superb passer. Also finished around the rim much much better than I expected. Isn't a great shooter but seems to hit enough to keep the D honest.

Joe Alexander is also one of the better guys here. Big & athletic, has a really good 1st step, finishes at the rim well & seems competant out to 15-18 feet. Could see extended minutes this season with no more Charlie V.

Jodie Meeks was decent, kid sure knows how to get his shot up quick smart. Would have had mid teens I think.

None of the Bulls stood out. Johnson wasn't as good as the 1st time I saw him, missed a lot of mid range Js. Didn't show great body language, either.

Phoenix vs Toronto was a bit lifeless, but ended up close at least. DeMar DeRozen showed a bit more this game, including a pretty athletic breakaway dunk & also shot well over a hand from mid range. Not convinced he's gonna be great, but he looked OK at least. Patrick O'Bryant again didn't really impress. Quincy Douby looked alright, able to create his own shot at least. Ukic ran the point pretty well for them too, they fell to shit once Smush Parker came on. He's pretty terrible.

For the Suns, I liked the look of Earl Clark. Has a smooth stroke & hit a few college-range 3s, and mixed it up on the boards too, would have had 10 or so I'd say. At times he looked a little too conservative for my liking, but I'm sure that's just a confidence thing. Carlos Powell was decent off the bench for the Suns, hot some nice buckets around the rim. I don't think h's gonna get an NBA contract anytime soon, but he's better than the majority of guys here.

Saw about a quarter and a half of Sac vs the D League team. The D Leaguers looked the most "together" of any team here. Players cheering for each other, coaches up & giving feedback all the time. Was kinda interesting to see. When I went to the other court, Sac were up, but not by much & only on the back of Jason Thompson. He was pretty impressive, had 20 or so at the half. Would've have half a dozen boards too. Can finish around the rim, but is also capable of putting it on the deck (at least for 2-3 dribbles) and has a fac eup game. Could do decently well this season I think.

Evans did nothing while I was there. Made 1 nice layup towards end of 2nd Q & that was it. Cruised through the rest of the time I saw. Sac's other pick, Casspi, looks like a poor man's Adam Morrison.. and Adam Morrison is pretty poor himself. I wouldn't hold my breath to see him inthe NBA anytime soon.

The game I most wanted to see was Portland vs Houston. Jerryd Bayless was good for the Blazers, albeit a bit TO prone. Seems like a smooth operator though. Their best guy was Dante Cunningham who would have scored mid-20's. And their other decent guy came off the bench & is called Pooh Jeter. Don't know that he has any NBA future because he's pretty small, but he was a livewire for them today.

Joey Dorsey was OK for the Rockets. Undersized but is really quick on his feet, had a nice spin move early & is good on the boards. I think Jawai needs to be similar to that to make it in the NBA. He's got a few inches on Dorsey too, which helps.

Chase Budinger was good. Don't think he'll have too many problems making an NBA team. Looked better than more than a few of the 1st rounders I've seen. Shoots it well & with confidence & unlike most mid-sixed whities, is actually quite athletic.

Newley got on late inthe 1st & took some time getting going. Didn't do much in his 1st few mins, but then he hit a nice J, and towards the end of his 1st stint, made a nice move to the rack going left. In the 2nd half he nailed one of his 2 open 3s & had a nice move to the bucket but just rimmed out on the contested layup. Wasn't too bad on D, though he held & grabbed a lot, though the refs never pulled him up on it. Did get beat a couple times on on balls bu I'd say he was OK without being spectacular on D.

Don't really think Newley has a great chance of sticking on the Rockets team, though he's certainly not the worst here. In fact, he'd be in the top 50% of players here pretty easily I think, but I doubt that many will get gigs. To me he just seems like he's probably destined to be a good player in good Euro leagues but not quite an NBA player.

Ingles didn't play today but I really wouldn't be entirely shocked if he sneaks a roster spot somewhere. He has a ton more upside than Newley at this point I think & has played well in the games I've seen. I know the haters will write him off & talk of his shortcomings or whatever, but he's one of the better non-contracted guys I've seen over the past 3 days. So here's hoping someone gives him a go.

That's about all I have on the player front. I will chime in with some general musings when I arrive home in like... 2 days.

Thanks Hoop. I'd forgotten about Meeks. The Bucks have got themselves a roster of young guys who will work their @sses off for Skiles this year I reckon. They won't win a lot, but they will find out who they should keep and land a decent draft slot at the end of the season!

Good to hear something positive about Ingles. I'd like nothing more than for him to succeed, but from the little snippets I've seen of Summer League this year, he seems to spend a lot of time on the perimeter on the weakside, waiting for a kick out that never comes. Its tough when Curry is either jacking up shots or feeding Randolph in the paint all game.

I think in the end his problem is that he doesn't seem assertive enough, and hasn't shown at least one NBA quality skill. I don't think he is strong enough to be a good slasher, and doesn't look like he will be a top notch defender or passer/ ball handler, so I think he has to show he can knock down the open jumper right out to 3pt range.

Yeah I'd agree with that, he doesn't have a "niche". He does everything "OK" by NBA standards but nothing really "well" by NBA standards. Still, I think he's closer than a lot of people give him credit for.

I caught a couple of the games on the last day....would of stayed but the casinos call to me...

Flynn will be very hard to stay in front of...but who cares? he's too small to finish.

Loved seeing Morris Almond playing on the knicks team. Coach D was at the game for the first half and Morris hit some DEEP treys so i think he could really stick.

Love the big guy 'Siler' for the wolves.
