BA to announce NBL/WNBL future season timings

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Larry Sengstock will tomorrow (Tuesday 13 October) announce the outcome of BA's comprehensive review of the timing of the National Basketball League and Women's National Basketball League season timings at its corporate offices in Sydney.

As part of its on-going reform of basketball, BA has conducted an extensive review of the optimum positioning of the season to maximise commercial returns for the sport in the lead-up to the launch of the 2010 season.

Sengstock will brief media on the outcome of the review, and reveal the future positioning in the calendar of the NBL and WNBL seasons. The BA chief will also provide an update on the progress of the introduction of a new national development league which forms part of the national pathway to the NBL and WNBL.

I'm nervous...

Surely something like October-March is the way to go.

-Avoids Olympics/World Champs ect
-Starts AFTER Footy Finals
-Inline with NBA which makes it 'basketball season'.
-Is after Summer League when most good imports are in the US.
-Only comp is A-League and Cricket. A-League isn't a huge market and cricket is only a few days in each city a year for the national team. Domestic cricket doesn't get a huge crowd.

Only issue is the 'no one wants to be indoors during summer' suggestion. With a lot (if not all) night games I don't think this is much of a problem.

Without doing a full impact study on it - maybe
Nov-Mar with D-Leagues Apr-Sep.

Makor problem is a lack of commercial support over summer. If you can't get corporates to spend money, cause their big customers are away rather than attending games, then there is no reason to book boxes etc. Therefore decreases incentive for naming rights and other sponsors casue they can't use their position to better service customers.

not sure what's the point of d-league when there's not enough jobs in the league itself...

If a d-league had some paid component for players, then it'd be creating jobs. The NBA D-League would keep loads of players semi-financial while they tried out for the higher level.

with NBL struggling you really think a D-league would survive? you can't be serious. mind you NBA D-league loses money. there's no point of players play in D-league trying to get into NBL because there's not enough jobs there and perhaps even worth them fighting for.

you have to understand, NBA is a whole different situation. Players would stay to try make the league because it's top in the world.

If there are 2-4 more teams introduced in the next couple of years there will be enough jobs. And players who have been playing in a better comp than current state leagues (partivualrly if it is in NBL off-season and includes non-elite NBL players) will be better prepared for those jobs than young players now.

I'm serious because they are looking at introducing a league underpinning the NBL and WNBL. Not saying it won't lose money, just that it creates some level of opportunity.

the opportunity can also act as a catalyst to death of pro-basketball. mind you NBAA didn't even have a D-League till few years ago after league was well estabilished.

NBL is no where near established with enough foundation.

it's just like you don't have kids until you're financially stable or you're asking for disaster.
