Quick note on forum changes

So far, just a couple of small things. Will add to this list when/if other changes are made.

- new categories: College, Europe, Video Games
- locking mechanism is now controlled by mods and indicated by a lock icon rather than the "Locked:" prefix.

These categories won't be automatically retro-populated with relevant topics. Topics go into categories when people create them and many people neglect to specify a category or pick the most suitable one at the time. I've shifted a few existing topics to these new categories so they don't start empty, but mostly they will be filled over the months with new threads.

Reasonable suggestions for more changes welcome.

Some things I am trying to get around to:

- posting available only to registered and logged in users (could do this immediately, but it's unfair until the next two points are completed)
- sessions last longer for logged in users (they time out too quickly now if the server crashes due to high load)
- logging in brings you back to wherever you were
- sub-league categories/tags for specific NBL and NBA teams
- ability to watch a topic for replies

Skipping blithely over anonymous absurdity there's an odd snippet of news and wit in a small percentage of them.

There is, and that's why I've not made this change already.

Nice one Isaac. Good changes. Being able to watch a topic for replies would be really good. I hope you can give that one a high priority?

I wouldn't mind a preview button to check over a post before it goes live...

I've never understood the point of only allowing registered users to post. It's not as if the names used etc for registered users is usually accurate.

A barrier to entry (provision of an email address in this case) removes *some* of the lower-end posts. I've long resisted it because it reduces participation.

Use of the Sin Bin function is also very limited since there is no real incentive for people to login at this point.

Hopefully eventually registration will enable things like watchlists, some sort of karma/awards, etc but I've been promising those things for years so don't wait up. About to get busier at the office already.

Whilst we all get frustrated with some anon. posts not too sure making harder to post is going to add a lot to subject matters as not having numbers like you do Isaac, that posts seem down on NBL and Sixer post which are of most interest to me.
With before game posting and actual game post numbers seem lot lower than remember.
But nothing wrong in trying to make site the best possible for regular users.
Just giving some input

Don't forget TR's edit function Isaac, he has been stuffing up, oops I mean asking for years....

Seriously though, I like the watch topic for replies idea.

The "last 7 days" post count tends to hover between 700-1,200 posts depending on the time of season.

Jan 23 game thread (Wildcats) had 203 replies. Jan 20 game had 160+. Jan 8 Breakers had 125. Game vs Wollongong in December had 100+. Then add on to that all the "coach sucks", "music sucks", "import sucks", "juniors suck" threads that come after a 36ers loss and I think we're well covered.

I would like to see more official game threads for all NBL games and all Lightning games (if not all WNBL if the interest is there) so please don't be afraid to start one if no one else has. I think people are more inclined to add a comment if the topic already exists, but not create one that isn't already there.

Also thinking of adding a couple more topics: Coaching and Fantasy. Maybe one for refs too and for asking about rule interpretations (not for complaining about refs). Thoughts?

Id like to see the little balls come back and be linked in the recent posts sidebar.

Also - should we let DDfan back in :)

I'd kill for an edit button.......

Next season I'm happy to cover the WNBL out of Canberra, and probably do the Sixers @ Wong games as well. I avoid Sydney...

Yea, I'd love a Hoops FNBL Topic. Hope to run a couple of league next season, so that would help.

And (more pie-in-the-sky talk) it should be feasible to let registered users decide on the make-up of their personal front page. So you and those interested could include Fantasy but maybe nix Juniors, while someone else might be more interested in Juniors, Local and Coaching, but not care for NBA, Fantasy or Offtopic.

Agreed with Statman re the balls on the sidebar...not the DDfan comeback though.

what about a facebook/youtube style "LIKE" or "DISLIKE" button you can place on peoples comments??????

for example someone just made a comment on the thread about the new name for the dome saying "it will always be the powerhouse to me!"......i wanted to just click "like" rather than doing a whole new post that just said "me too!!"

thoughts?

I like the sound of the new changes. The one I am most looking forward to are the ability to watch posts for a reply.

Although in saying that the most useful to me would have to be the longer login session and logging in bringing you back to where you were.
The number of times I have finished typing a reasonable sized post, only to realise I haven't logged in... it really is amazing how often I do that!

skip, bulks things up a bit. Creates another thing to squeeze into the design. For NBL articles, could either start a thread for each major one or have a certain way of people submitting them that was a bit separate to the regular topic list (but then people would want to comment on them).

curious, yes, it can be done (see my mention of 'karma/awards' further up). Awards are pretty easy - just a flag really in the database. Karma is a little bit trickier as it brings an extra database table into things - not hard to do, but can really impact speed of the site. Once upon a time, the forum index hit two database tables (topics and replies) but now (to limit database pressure) it just hits topics and the count of replies and most recent reply data is cached in the topic table. I have wondered about caching threads so people view a static version but that wouldn't work for moderators and would create a lag on replies appearing.

Will try and think of an efficient way of doing it. The site crashes often enough as it is, so I don't want to up the pressure on the server if I can help it.

Isaac's silence is confirming my suspicions.

I don't care, call it the "TR is a retarded spaz" button, I need something... A lot of my posts now come whilst sitting in a car (passenger seat) and the old fingers sometimes miss the correct letters.

I've been lucky that autocorrect on my iPhone hasn't told the world that DB has an outstanding VHS porn collection or something like that...

ability to watch a topic for replies would be great.

Edit function or preview function, can't you just have a read over what you have written before eagerly clicking Post?

DJ, most of us do that but TR is different. He is too busy kicking back in the passenger seat whilst being driven around the ghettos of our nation's capital.

He is above the law!
