U20 Nationals

U20's kicked off today with SA men playing the Vic's.

Victoria won in a low scoring contest with the final scores 55-43.

The game was closely contested with SA leading by 4 at the end of the first, then the Vic's pegged them back to be up by 4 at the half, then a high scoring third saw the Vic's only go up 1 more, leading SA by 5 into the last. The damage was done I. The fourth quater when SA couldn't buy a bucket, only hitting 4 points in the quater and the Vic's hitting 11. Victoria ended up running away by 12.

SA main contributors were Cody Ellison with 10 points and 7 boards, in 3min however shot it at 5/15. Major Deng had 8pts and 8 blocks shooting 4/10 in 32 minutes, Blicavs had 9 and 9, shooting 3/11 in 26 minutes.

SA shot a terrible clip of 18/76 for 24% and a horrid 1/22 for 5% from behind the arc.

Victorias Stand puts were Owen Odigie who had 8pts 9rbs in 29minutes, and Lucas Barker who had 10pts and 3rbs in 22 minutes.

Victoria shot at 18/56 for 33% and led the rebound count by 7.

Victoria also had 15 additional free throws, taking 22 free throws the SAs 7.

Clearly SA need to get the ball inside, and if the 3ball isn't going find another way to put points on the board.

SA women play tonight at 5pm against ACT for what should be a comfortable win. They have managed to draw a pool without Vic and NSW which will work in their favour.

SA men play next Against New Zealand men at 3pm tomorrow which will test them physically.

Alot of the shots were decent looks, and SA did have a significant number of more shots than the Vic's, however the shots weren't dropping. Maybe needed to utilize the pure shooters a bit better. Overall a reasonable performance

SA Women had one of the easier draws of the first day, facing ACT women at 5pm yesterday.

SA defeated ACT 70-54 on the back of a 28-11 second quater.

The first quater saw a feeling out process of some slow and steady basketball, both teams getting into their sets, and throwing a few turnovers in the process. SA led 15-12

The second quater saw SA score significant points in the paint, compared to ACT only going 3/11 with two buckets inside the paint, with SA blowing the lead out to 20 at the half, 43-23.

The third saw things slow down a touch, with ACT outscoring SA 11-10, as SA shot 4/20 from the field and ACT 3/13

The fourth quater saw SA struggling again to contain ACT, however this time from deep, with ACT 5/7 3 balls, however SA had more points in the paint, as was the tale of the game. ACT won the quater 20-17, and the half 31-27.

Steals and turnovers cost ACT big, with SA stealing the ball 18 times, and causing a huge 31 turnovers, plus doubling ACT's points in the paint 36-18.

The final score line reads 70-54, in a good win for SA if nothing overly special or dominant, and a good start to their campaign. All players from SA had a decent run, with minutes ranging from 12 - 25 for all.

The big contributors were;

For SA

Olivia Thompson 16 points on 8/19, 9 boards, 1 assist, 3 blocks a 1 steal and 2 turnovers in only 25 minutes.

Stephanie Talbot 15 points on 7/12, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 steals, 1 block and 6 turnovers in 25 minutes.

Tayla Corrigan 8 points on 4/8, and 6 boards in 17 minutes.

For ACT

Rachael Mcnaughton 8 points on 3/7, 3 boards and 3 Assists in 22 minutes.

A whopping 58-6 points in the paint the main tale of the game. Jaclyn Smith led all scorers with 17 points on 8/10 shooting. Isabella Morgan was Tas best with 16 points however a costly 8 turnovers.

NSW 74 d NZ 32

New Zealand only scoring 6 points in the first half were down 20 at the break. Josephine Stockhill was NZ's best with 12 points on 6/17 shooting and 16 boards

WA 54 d QLD 41

QLD led at the main break 30-28 after a tightly contested first half, and another just as tight 3rd quater saw scores tied at 40 all going into the last. After a 17-10 point third quater saw the gap close to four, before NSW turned it up a notch and took the game away from them. Stats were close across the board, with the only notable difference being NSW outrebounding TAS by 12 boards. This mornings game:

Men:

WA 88 d QLD 67

WA shot the ball at 53% including 8/18 triples. WA pushed out a 29 to 11 first quater lead, and never looked back from their. QLD seem a bit sluggish out of the gates, and WA obviously fuming about the loss to NT yesterday came out with a point to prove. WA best Beau Samuelson who had 20 points on 7/10 shooting including 4/5 threes, and pulled 11 boards and Chevy Anderson contributing with 6/8 shooting for 14 points and 9 boards. Best for QLD was Paul Aleer who had 15 points on 7/11 and 6 boards in 15 minutes and Jarrod Gamble with 12 points on 6/14 and 8 boards. Surprising that Aleer didnt play more minutes considering the numbers he put up.

WA certainly looked 200% better today, and I may have written them off to early.

NSW 82 d NT 39

This game was always going to go down in this fashion, however I did expect more from NT after there good showing yesterday. NSW up by 20 at half time, then after a quiet 3rd quater copped a rocket from the coach, and blased a 29 to 8 last quater. Chircu led all scores with 19 points on 9/15 and 4 boards with 3 assists in 25 minutes, followed by Dumovic with 12 points of 6/16 and 11 boards.

More from Todays action:

Men @ 3pm

SA 82 d NZ 56

SA built a healthy lead at half time leading 42 to 17, before both sides knocked up another 40 points for the second half. SA held the lead comfortably and rotated a few bench players through. SA's best Majok Deng 17 points shooting 5/11 on 9 boards in 27 minutes. Ellison hit 7/14 for 15 points and 5 boards in 31 minutes and Clark 5/9 for 10 and 6 in 17 minutes. NZ's best James Ashby shot 7/12 for 17 points and 9 boards, Jordan Ngatai 4/17 for 13 points and 15 boards.

Women @ 3pm

SA 69 d WA 63

SA led 37 - 28 at the main break gathering significant points in the paint. WA fought hard outscoring SA in the second half 35-32. SA held on by 6 to walk away with an unconvincing win. Talbot shot 5/9 including 12 free throws for 19 points, 3 boards and 4 assists. Thompson had 17 points of 7/18 with 9 boards. WA's best were Adrienne Jones shot 6/14 for 19 points and 6 boards including 3/6 three, Nadia Italiano shot 6/9 for 13 points.

ACT 61 d QLD 50

ACT led early at the end of the first 17-14, then held the lead 32-26 at the half. ACT then blew out QLD in the 3rd outscoring them 20-7 with QLD only managing 2 baskets for the quater. QLD then turned the tides and outscored ACT 17-9 in the last including 4 triples. It wasnt enough as ACT held on by 11. ACT's best were Alex Bunton with 25 points on 10/19 and a disgusting 21 boards in 40 minutes. Abbie Davis had 16 points and 15 boards on 7/12 shooting. QLD best was Mikhaela Donnelly 6/23 for 18 points and 7 boards, and Ashley Taia shot 4/9 for 12 points and 4 boards.

The remainder of last nights games:

Men:

5pm

NSW 78 d QLD 74

After QLD lost to WA Men by 20, this game was looking like becoming a one way street. This was not the case. A very even first quater saw QLD men lead by 1 at the break after nailing a number of threes however NSW was banging the ball down low for alot of baskets in the paint. The lead extended to 37-31 at half as now QLD started to find keyway buckets whilst still maintaining some good mid range shooting. NSW becoming less efficient within the restricted area. The third quater saw NSW wipe away QLD's lead, by again going back inside to find easier buckets, as QLD stuck with the inside outside gameplan, however had a number of less shots for the quater. NSW won the quater 24-16, to lead by 2 into the final frame. QLD still did not deviate from the plan, however NSW inside presence proved too much as they won the quater 23-21 and took a narrow 4 point win. QLD took 13 less shots, turned the ball over 9 times more (mainly the second half), and gave up +26 for points in the paint. NSW best was Chircu with 23 on 10/21 to go with 5 boards in 33 mintues, with Dumovic 6/16 for 16 points and 8 boards in 30 minutes. QLD best was Michael Demertize who had 18 points on 6/12 shooting, with his only buckets coming from 6/9 from three in 32 minutes, with Brady Rutland chipping in for 18 points on 8/18 in 25 minutes.

5pm

TAS 69 d NT 52

TAS looked to really control this game from the outset, taking an early 18-10 point lead, before an even second quater saw TAS again win the period at 20-18, with half time scores 38-28. TAS didnt look to give up this lead, shooting 47% clip for the game and dominating the rebounding contests throughout winning that 38-17. The third quater only saw NT convert 2 buckets, due to poor shot selection and good defence in patches, with TAS taking the period 14-5, and leading by 19 into the last period. NT looked to convert better, and take some better shots in the last which saw them win the period 19-17, however the margin was too large to really make in impact, with TAS walking away with a decent 17 point win. TAS best was Ben Richmond who had 32 points on 12/20 including 5/13 threes and 8 boards in 35 minutes. NTs best was Daniel Florence who has 17 points on 5/14 including 2/6 threes.

7pm

VIC 91 d ACT 53

Unfortunatley this was always going to be a one way street. However although this game only ever had one results that was going to happen, the final scoreline is somewhat surprising. It either demonstrates ACT's improvement over previous years, or VIC's weakness, as at last years U20's the VIC's played ACT in the round game and the half time score was around 90-10. ACT came out the blocks hard, and VIC looked to underestimate them, with ACT leading at the first break 19-16, before VIC turned it up a notch and dominated the second period 28-4, to go up by 21 at the half. ACT remained somewhat competitive in the second half, going down by 17 for the half and eventually 38 for the game. VIC whilst dominant were unconvincing, and rotating players, shooting a reasonable clip of 43% however struggled from deep for only 17%. VIC had multiple players score in the high teens, with the best Lucas Barker, who had 15 points on 6/12 to go with 6 boards and 5 assists. ACT's best was Reece Kaye who had 9 points, 7 boards and 5 assists in 26 minutes.

Women

530pm

NSW 73 d TAS 62

NSW took out their game with TAS, which has all but secured there top 2 finish in the pool and eliminated TAS from medal contention. NSW started strong pushing an early lead out to 14 at the break, leading 23-9 on the back of some good shooting, and forcing TAS late into the shot clock and getting below average looks. TAS played a better inside outside game in the second, and nailing some deep threes that saw them take the period 15-12 as NSW fg% dropped quickly. The third played out very similar to the second, except this time NSW again seemed to be hitting their shots, whilst TAS were still converting from deep and taking some cheap points inside, however NSW won the period 23-21 and had a 13 point lead going into the last break. TAS stuck with the game plan, however NSW stretched the defence forcing TAS to not pull the trigger on a number of threes, throwing them off their stride slightly. NSW werent as efficient inside in the fourth as TAS took the period 17-15, but NSW did enough to hold onto a comfortable double digit win. NSW best was Ellie Junod who nailed 27 points on 13/24, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals, 0 turnovers in only 24 minutes of play. TAS best Irini Alexiou had 6/12 for 17 points. TAS star Isabella Morgan struggled with the defence pressure, shooting 1/11, however pulled 9 boards and still contributed.

7pm

VIC 103 d NZ 49

One way traffic here, with VIC never looking in danger in this one. VIC took a 14 point lead in the first quater, before demolishing NZ in the second with a 35-5 period, taking a 44 point lead into the main break. VIC then ran some bench players for the second half, winning the third 23-9, and giving up more time for bench players, which saw NZ take the last 22-18. VIC shot at 51% from the field and NZ shot 44% however NZ had half the number of field goal attempts (90-45), and VIC forced 38 turnover to 11. VIC had 6 out of 10 players in double figures, with Shanae Greaves leading all scorers with 24 points on 12-15 in 23 minutes, and Carley Mijovic had 18 points in 7/17 and 11 boards in 21 minutes. NZ best was Josephine Stockhill who had 7 points and 14 boards in 32 minutes.

I agree with "what the" in the fact that we were up against more "recognized" players but our lads performed extremely well and they should hold their heads up high with what they ended up achieving. Anonymous you must be a frustrated Div 5 player if you can't acknowledge what has transpired here. We all wanted them to bring back Gold & they just missed out. I would have liked to have seen R Clark given some minutes in the second half when Dengs scoring dried up & T Davies thrown in as well as he is a good for a few 3's. Overall well done to the players & staff you have done SA proud!

Actually looking at the time 812 posted he/she was commenting on the girls. Both teams played quality bball and it is a long week to go thru undefeated (girls) and then come up against an incredibly physical Vic team. Well done to both teams for bringing home a medal you have done yourselves and state proud, it's just a shame there are grizzlers out there who wouldn't be happy even if it had been gold. Five of these girls have gone through years of bullshit by unfortunately having to be involved in sa country and have luckily come out the other end terrific players. It's been a hard slog and they deserved their medal. I'm not sure who the new blood is but good luck to them and their future in this fantastic game.

Yes but sometimes the passion can blind us and stupidity unfortunately takes over. I watched him at various games throughout the week and he conducted himself with the utmost decency and I beleive he has the respect of his team, it was always going to be tough playing the vics. We all know how passionate or stupid, which ever way you look at it, the victorians are with their sport, and when you come in as the underdog and lead most of the game .... well we all know how it ended. Well done anyway and I hope it isnt as serious as a life ban that would be an absolute shame, top bloke.

Why was squad named before these championships anyway?...surely could have waited and see how some of these so called stars go when they have to actually play rather than live on reputation. This applies to ALL states not just the one mentioned

Re: Gems Squad member anchored to the bench

Was this the Gems Squad member who shot 20 points in the only game that she saw decent minutes?? Not sure if she would have made any difference, but seemed a bit strange

Maybe good coaches have cottoned on to her falling out of defense to get the fast break. There is only one of the three SA squad there on talent and merit and she played well at the nationals.

TC is great guy and he would be disappointed in his display no doubt. The team appreciated his effort and played with passion and nearly got the lollies at the big dance.
Maybe instead of the bagging - a few accolades TC well done a silver medal. Ask yourself what were realistic expectations yeah gold for sure but Vic / NSW are always in the way - got one but couldnt get both.
TC hats off to you. Knockers get of his case

You expect athletes in all sports to act responsibly yet coach after coach at the Nationals from SA has led the way with outbursts of poor behavior. Metro and country coaches and those who appoint them need to take a long hard look at themselves and what they are modeling for their players. Not good enough in all sports except basketball it seems.

if a player made a scene like this, they would be labeled a 'cancer' and never be picked in a state team again, yet behaviour from a coach will go un noticed and punished. shame

If I did it on a Friday night, I would be suspended by basketball SA and probably kicked out of my club!! Yet this bloke seems to be made of Teflon
