YouYi Games 2012 - Boomers v China

• YouYi Games return to WA for second year
• Three matches to be played in WA
• Only chance to see Australia v China on Australian soil in 2012

The Australian Boomers will take on Team China in three exciting international basketball matches in Western Australia in the lead up to the London Olympics.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the two teams would face off as part of the YouYi Games international series, which was returning to WA for the second year.

Dr Hames said it would be the only chance for Aussie basketball fans to see their heroes in action against China in Australia this year.

"The YouYi Games are a unique feature of WA's diverse events calendar, and this year they will see the Australian and Chinese national men’s teams play in Perth and Albany," he said.

“Australia and China are ranked nine and 10 in the world respectively and have drawn the same group for the Olympic competition, so these three matches will be a crucial part of the pre-Olympic preparation for both sides.”

The Minister said the Perth matches would be broadcast into China via CCTV, across Australia on Fox Sports and throughout WA on WIN and Channel 9.

“The YouYi Games offers West Australians the chance to see a great sporting contest in the lead up to the London Olympics as well as creating great exposure for WA in one of our key tourism markets, China,” he said.

The first match in the series will be played at Perth’s Challenge Stadium on Saturday June 9. The teams will then travel to Albany for the second match on Monday June 11 and return to Perth on Wednesday June 13 for the final match at Challenge Stadium.

Dr Hames said the State Government, through Eventscorp, was proud to support the YouYi Games.

Fact File
• YouYi is Mandarin for 'friendship’
• The series is organised by former Perth Wildcat and Boomers player Andrew Vlahov through his company RV Sport

Very disappointing that the series isn't going to be on FTA outside of WA.

Quite amazed that it's on FTA in WA at all. Especially channel 9, who are probably the second least generous station for basketball in Perth (channel 7 being the worst)

Good result that it's being this well covered for what essentially a nothing series.

Is there such a thing as a 'nothing series' when you're representing your country?

Ask the 12 guys that pull on the green and gold for these three games whether it's a 'nothing series'.

Sorry, it's a major warm up event for the olympics. Happy now? The main agenda for this series is being to continue the business and tourism relationship between China and Australia, particularly in WA. There is nothing more to it than that.

FYI I'm all for the series, just need to acknowledge that it's not a big event, despite it being on TV, which is what I was amazed about.

Vart, it's a nothing series mate like the one last year too but still it would be good to see Boomers on free to air TV again.

Anyone know the TV situation with the Greece series?

A nothing series? Just over a month before the Olympics? Are you guys for real? Seriously!

Will the teams be playing for sheep stations? No - of course not as the Olympics is not being played in Oz. But will the games feature players part of the preliminary squads that will be working their backsides off trying to secure a coveted place in the final 12-man Olympic roster? You bet!

Expect to see China send their top 12-20 players vying for a place in their Olympic team and the same for the Boomers.

Does anyone think it will be a sell out crowd for these games at challenge stadium? Have to wait few days to purchase tix but don't want to miss out either.

That's right, there will be some players fighting for their Olympic lives in this series. The Greek series will obviously be a step up on this, but it should still have a bit of zest about it - much more than last year's YouYi Games anyway.

LC, thank god you come on here and speak some sense!

I agree with everything you said. And I'll add that as China are in our group for the Olympics, this is a great opportunity for our players and coaches to observe their offensive/defensive sets, along with some of their players that we may not have seen before.

Re TV coverage of the Greece series, Marc Howard from BA tweeted the other day "Have had good news on TV coverage of the Boomers and Opals Farewell Series, stay tuned..."
