Sa Juniors vrs Vic System

Just speaking to a friend who's son plays over in Vic, over there they have no under 10 distric comp but start their rep program from under 12s and all rep teams play Friday nights from what they call vc to regional I guess like div 1 to 4
Also this is what I found interesting is all Rep / district players must play for a local domestic club on a Saturday and they also train.
So kids who play rep over there are playing twice a week and training 3 times per week.
Appart from the shere numbers it is no wonder why they are such a strong basketball state.

Obviously the retention is similar to all other sports like football. I was over there a few months ago and saw some junior comp on a Friday night at Dandenong and the vc 12 girls girls I saw play would beat may of the 14 div 1 girls teams over here. Maybe we should stop looking so inward and have a look what is working in other States heck we may even improve.

Not all clubs make their rep players play Domestic club basketball. They manage it especially when they are growing and taking on extra work loads. I do find most kids want to play club basketball, with their mates .

Having being involved with the Vic representative competition for more than 20 years, most kids who play in the Friday night representative competition do in fact then play domestic hoops (club, school - or both!) on the Saturday as well. Some Associations do in fact impose a mandatory requirement that the kids play in their Association's domestic competition whilst some do not. As kids get older, this requirement in most places becomes more relaxed.

It is also worth noting that for a child that plays both representative and domestic (Friday & Saturday), they would have at least two training sessions per week (one for each team), if not three or even four training sessions in total as some representative teams have 2-3 training sessions per week, with one session often involving specialist skills training. And if the kid is in the ITC program, or Vic state squad, then that just adds to the workload.

The key thing is that in Vic the majority of talented kids play two games a week back-to-back on the Friday and Saturday with at least two training sessions per week.

It is worth noting that the elite players are probably playing at least 2 games a week, at least 3 team training sessions, plus the ITC program sessions, and plus any state squad training / tryouts requirements. It is a very heavy workload when you get to the top-end.

I have personally seen some players thrive on the workload of 2, but I have seen just as many players burnt out by this system.

If some of those Vic team would beat the U14 Div 1 team, how did Forestville and Sturt's U14 teams finsh in the top 8 at classics.

Not to mention Forestville u12 girls performing well at classics.

Just a rediculous statement.

A lot of these training sessions are 60mins not 90mins like all SA teams. Does make a difference.

The whole system of SA basketball is so different to every other state.

My kids have been involved in the Vic VJBL comp for the past 7 years, and I can say that we have not had any 60 minute training sessions for rep bball. The team trainings are usually 2 hours Sunday, and 90 minutes mid week. I am not sure which clubs are only training for 60 minutes?

Do many of the SA boys play footy during winter? I know a large amount of Vic boys from 12s-16s also play footy in the winter...so add a Sunday footy game and a mid week training into the mix along with rep commitments. Of course injury does become a factor, especially with the older boys.
