36ers & Lightning to merge?

THE 36ers and Lightning are deep into negotiations about forming one national basketball league entity and sharing resources.

The revelation comes in the wake of the WNBL releasing its free agents' list and the complete Lightning roster being available for interstate recruiting.

The future of coach Peter Buckle, two years into his three-year contract, is also under a cloud, as is the direction the 36ers now will take, Marty Clarke's three years at the helm at an end.

Lightning owner Vince Marino said he was negotiating with the 36ers and the result of those conversations would influence the direction his women's team would take.

No need for the 36ers to re-sign Gibbo now with Angela at the point ;)

Fantastic, entity could be called the Adelaide Basketball Club, with both teams keeping their respective names (sixers, lightning).

Most, if not all, games should be played as double headers where possible.

If Vince is behind the move, would that help the Sixers financial situation?

I like the idea of the Adelaide Basketball Club with both teams keeping their names!

Does this mean the 36ers cheerleaders and the Lightning cheerleaders would both be at the same games?

lot of possibilities here -

more regular double headers - good value for money.

i always enjoyed one game - meal at the apollo then another game.

fans likely stick around for second game - keeps numbers and community interest / awareness up.

game day - only have pay running costs / open everything up for 1 session - but longer times.

seating needs to be sorted though.

Love this idea if they can truly put it together and work the back office together correcttly they can cut costs by about 30-40% which is alot. (Sorry some people will loose there jobs!

Also benefits of cross promotions possibe double headers etc can work and also major cross sponsorship oppurtunities!

Double headers would be great if they got some good meals going between games, and 6ers platinum season tickets and maybe gold got you season pass to lightning games also. Help fill up some more seats for the women's game. Don't think lightning have that many employees, so don't think coming together will help cut office costs that much, maybe 10-20%, certainly not as high as 40%. If they think it will help cut the cost of advertising/marketing then they are already doomed, because that's the last thing 6ers need to be lazy with, if anything they should be invest more into that, or at least a lot smarter...

One upside to the Adelaide Basketball Club, they can play ABC alot more

Is this a bit deja vu. Am I not wrong in suggesting that this was the case back when BASA existed and both teams under the one umbrella. Also most games back then were double headers.

similar set up before - but then everyone wanted to do their own thing - seem to recall it may have been driven by the lightning then to form their own identity and play at wayville etc.

will have to wait and see the nuts and bolts of what is planned

The BASA model was the structure al teams should play under. Owned by the State Body (Basketball members) with private financial sponsorship/support.

BASA died because of a debt they should never have had and could never pay back for a venue no one wants.

Government screwed all basketball members over and we all sat back and took it and we've been in a mess ever since.

I'm a wildcats supporter and I haven't heard a single thing this season about the West Coast Waves (if that is their name) but hopefully if the 36ers/lightning goes through then maybe the wildcats/waves and crocs/fire and kings/flames could also look to have the same ownership and do cross promotion!

Any new NBL/WNBL teams approved by BA could also look into the region they are supporting and try helping each other out... Not sure I'm making the right point here but it sounds exciting for the Adelaide folk if it works.
