Breakers Second Import

Word is the Breakers are close to signing their second import, a big man to play ahead of/share minutes/back-up Pledger.

Rumour is that is might be the former - a medical check away from confirming a quality player. Anyone with any ideas on who they would want?

Not sure who they are going for but will probably split minutes evenly the way they did with Hudson and Pledger the third title year. Plus they need insurance in case Pledger goes down again

Vickerman had been looking at a couple of NZNBL guys but with all the recent quality signings around the league hopefully he exhausts all his options in searching for the right player so we end up with someone real good.

Jackson /Carter
Webster / TeRangi
Abercrombie / Bailey
Vukona / Wesley
Pledger / ?

There'll be plenty of minutes for Pledger otherwise he'll head to Europe at season's end.

I imagine Vickerman wants a mobile, athletic 4/5 who can shoot to give him two very different C options ala Pledger and Wilkinson, but with better D from the import.

I hope Pledger doesn't get injured again; Casey Frank is gold in the commentary box.

On a slightly more relevant note, I'm going to dream about former NBA players out of our price range that could fit the bill.

Brian Cook - Wouldn't be a genuine defensive presence, but the fact we could boast a guy who used to be in the LA Lakers rotation could get casual fans in seats.

Ryan Hollins - An athletic guy that can have a major impact on the defensive end. Offensive ability outside of alley-oops/garbage baskets and his basketball IQ are questionable. Can space the floor as well.

Willie Reed - No actual NBA experience (which hopefully makes him cheaper), but a good summer league performance makes him an attractive option.

Greg Stiemsma - Lacks offensive talent but is a solid defender and a hard worker.

You would think it is going to be a premium stud import. Look at what Melbourne, Sydney & Perth have done finally NBL going back to the standard pre the BA takeover with good recruiting+marquee rule!

As of right now with the Sixers losing DJ hurts them. The kings improved with Childress but not enough to put them over the likes of Perth who brought back the best team in the comp and probably improved with Daniels. The United certainly got better as well.

NZ have also done that with Jackson, then they also have to pay Abercrombie, Pledger and Vukona who wouldn't all come cheap.

I'm sure they're still going for a very capable player, but a stud in the Jackson, Ennis etc range might be a stretch.

BTW - Melbourne signed a guy from the D-League who's missed a year with injury. Very good reports about him from last pre-season but not qualified as a stud yet!
